DATE/TIME OF INCIDENT: 6-5-18 10:55 am
LOCATION: 5953 Bernadette Ln
CITY: San Diego
INCIDENT DETAILS:
A 2nd Alarm fire was called after a fire started. 2 Good Samaritans who do not live in the neighborhood came running after seeing the smoke and helped save another home by hitting it with water as the fire was hitting it from next door.
Fire Investigators have determined that the fire was set deliberately and the body of a man was found inside the burnt structure. The home was in foreclosure and the owner was evicted. He was a well-known jeweler who had been accused of stealing customers jewelry and was forced out of business by the State for not paying his taxes.

Love and compassion for neighbors down the street is what saved the next door house. We need more people like that in the world. I imagine it takes time to get the water hoses unloaded and the water to start coming out. Before anyone can complain about how long it takes to get going once on the scene, try being a volunteer firefighter, or first responder before passing judgement. The scene has to be accessed before jumping head first is what I remember in first responder class.

I’ll come clean right from the start. “I’m a retired UK firefighter”. There, I’ve said it. Difficult to make an accurate assessment of this job due to the editing of this excellent piece of video. First off, the guys doing their best with the garden hose are too be commended for their public spirited attitude and bravery. This was always going to be a tricky job due to the premises being tucked away up a corner of a cul-de-sac, restricting access, and with the fire being already well established. Let’s get the high pressure hose reel versus main jet debate out of the way. This job was way past hose reels by the time the FD arrived so it was obvious to me that ‘big water’ was going to be needed, and securing a decent water supply was a priority from the ‘get go’. Mind you the statement that ‘Gpm puts fire out, not pressure’ baffles me. If my memory of my old hydraulics lessons serves me right, isn’t it a mixture of both? I will concede that maybe substituting the garden hose for a hose reel jet would have been a good idea, manpower and time permitting, but if persons are reported trapped, not a priority. Criticism that ff arrived not ‘kitted up’. Not sure you’re right about that! If the reference is to the fact that they arrive without BA sets started up, I’ve never been convinced that that’s a good idea in all cases. As for the speed of attack..... I can’t fault them. Their actions looked measured and precise. Like any good ff should be. Upon entering the premises they extinguished fire as they went along. (the burning tree) Not a good idea to leave a fire burning behind you, as it hinders your exit strategy. All in all these ff looked like a pretty together outfit. They appeared to have tactics in place for incidents such as this, and they stuck to them. Oh! By the way. I’d fight fires with that ‘big lad’ any day. If you were to be falling through a weakened floor and he grabbed you by the scruff of the neck, you’d just know he’d haul you to safety. Stay safe comrades!

Peter Pirich I saw that too. I wondered if it was some type of box that the only the fire dept has the "key" to, to activate this unit to open the gates, maybe? I did have conduit run to it, so it has to be electrical. I heard a lady asking the fireman being interviewed this very thing as the video cut. She asked him and he said "Where's that at?" just as the video cuts. 😕😧 Now we'll never know. 🙁😓😢🤧 😁🤣 ⚜

To the ones complaining, our fire fighters have other jobs, not just a life of a fireman. You don't know how far their jobs are, then they have to get their apparatus on at the fire department and go to the fire...give them some slack please!!! And just maybe the one that was trying to put the tree on fire out, did you ever think he was doing that to stop the fire from spreading??? Why do so many complain about our heroes!?

Laura Kearney one of our firefighters was having lunch with the mayor and his wife. Call came in, he took off. Gets back, told her about the call, she asks him why he does it and how much we get paid.😑 Most of our citizens have no idea what we do, yet are so grateful when we show up (still unaware that i was at work, LT was sleeping, and Chief was with family). And they wonder what takes us so long? Four minutes from dispatch to on scene ain't bad. The average citizen has no bloody idea. Imagine if they had to pay us, good lord. Sure, we'll be right over, for 60 grand a year, for a crew of 12, blow the budget to smithereens.

People who off themselves never consider how their actions may affect others. The guy was a serious crook and apparently he wasn't able to cope with the results of being caught. Since the house was in foreclosure and he had been kicked out no doubt he burned the house so he could cheat the bank out of it. However, his selfishness almost took a terrible turn and if it hadn't been for the civilians that jumped in it would have taken the neighbor's house too and who knows how far it may have spread.

Good video, and good firefighting here; they did not waste time (apart from my usual gripe, that they should have had their gear on while en route). Btw: they were NOT *saving* the tree: it was burning, and they had to pass that tree going to and from the fire. You just don't want to have anything burning behind you - it's common sense. You do not want to be sprinkled with embers each time you pass that tree, or risk it topples, and block your escape, or your line.

Who knew that the meters are the property of the homeowners and the electric company will not hook the homes up until the meters are installed and inspected. I looked it up. Google Mark Himmel. There are several stories.

As already answered, Mark Himmel. He set the house on fire and shot himself. The actual address was 5967 Bernadette Ln, he was 64 and had just filed bankruptcy a few months prior. He was robbed a couple of years prior to this and apparently was facing financial difficulties after the robbery, www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/public-safety/sd-me-robbery-sentencing-20180712-story.html.

Thanks Doug. Amazing video. Well done to the neighbours (NOT Firefighter trained) that saved the two adjoining properties. It is a shame that the RUBBER NECKS didn't grab garden hoses from all/any close neighbours yard and help. Oh sorry I keep forgetting getting a phone video of is more important than helping someone. It was very poor that Dep Chief Zombo didn't mention that it was the work of the two Good Samaritan that saved the neighbouring house. The registered owner is Mark Himmel, owner of SaLing Jewelry in San Diego. His former customers said he refused to give back their heirloom jewellery (approx $800,000 worth). A little digging on Himmel showed the Franchise Tax Board revoked his right to operate his business, because he owed more than $2,300 in taxes. Neighbors told 10News the home was recently foreclosed, and that Himmel no longer lived there. However, one neighbor said he saw him Tuesday morning. "He pulled up front in his van, and was out front at around 5 'o clock this morning," Kintzele said.

Man homes in oregon are very close, if your neighbors house is fully involved, your will be too, so 3 or more homes can burn up. Its really dumb but contractors want more money so they cram the houses together. It should be a law to stop this crowding and make them liable if tragedy occurs.

I think it would have been different without the fence there to help the heat and smoke from the guy with the hose. I am sure if there was no fence the firefighters would have wanted the civilians back and and in safety. Kudos. I have seen firefighters yelling at people with a hose.....guess it depends the spot you can spray from is safe enough.

RJ Wickland there’s a huge safety reason behind that, some research you should do about it. It’s pretty smart even though it slightly can slow down the process

Doesn't it sound like a 3 bagger. not 2. Look at the accelerant ignite that was squirted on the front at 00.30. Yes, even by looking at the way it went up and the way it was burning, it was arson. Well done SDFD! Great job Good Samaritan!!! 💌💌💌💌💌

Firefighters: When everyone runs away, they run towards. Amazing people. And the thing is, in CA a house fire can become the whole neighborhood conflagration in a matter of moments. Thankfully no dry, hot winds on that day.

leroy jenkins it’s probably rope for self escape or a search line
@SeptrothFFXI
@SeptrothFFXI 6 жыл бұрын
leroy jenkins it’s most likely a bailout kit to escape from a fire if things go wrong and the way you came in is no longer a viable means of egress. Inside of it will be aprox 30’-50’ of rope or tubular webbing (length depends on the manufacturer and department preference/sop) and a decent device that can be attached to a harness that is internal in their gear or the Scott packs they are wearing.
