Some LA residents had roof sprinklers. It saved their homes. Some had generators and large fire hoses, using water from their pools to save multiple homes.

Yes but if the electric compony cuts power or the wind downs the powerlines. Our town has huge generators now we put around town on the street in fire season.

Our whole thought pattern regarding wildfires has to change. We cannot continue to rely on the fire departments to save us. While we have laws regarding defendable space for the individual home, we need to think about this on a community /county/state level. In the past we had buffer zones of orchards, tomato, and flower fields. Those areas were in essence a buffer zone. We have built homes in those areas. We also need to not allow building of neighborhoods up to and into wilderness without such a buffer zone. We should also consider control burns as an option. It is better to have a controlled burn that a wild fire.

Bury powerline instead of leaving people I'm freezing temps and no water in the back country where renewable energy powers those flakes on the board!

Most of the conventional wisdom about this stuff is dead wrong. The worst thing you could do is "clear brush" - all you do is create the perfect bowling alley for embers. Since these are wind rather than fuel driven fires, and it turns out flammability is all about hydration rather than plant selection, we would be much better off creating greenbelts of lightly hydrated native plants (it takes a heckuva lot less water to hydrate a native than non-native plant), plus it would be beautiful year-round and we would keep all that habitat. Win-win based on 30 years of experience and a 4 year study for the US Navy.

@cal-native Need a common sense and community to bring this stuff to the table, but meanwhile, back at base, I just heard they don't have the money to bury the wires, they've put off for years here in the back country. They did a survey over a year ago and were supposed to start july-december, now I hear they just want another helicopter....lovely. Better than nothing, but the air assets currently suffice. They are on target and fast, we have a helo base not far from my house and I mean a helo base.... capacitate an army of choppers....Ramona is no more than a 10 minute flight. I got no complaints on the air assets response time and size of the response. But paying these electric prices and paying subsidies and all kinds of middle men is BS!

And were dose the power come from? You know for all this so called water to be shot at the big evil fire? Because usually there isn't any when the electric compony shuts it off and or the wind has knocked down power lines. Water doesn't flow up hill. I know your trying to help. I see that. We went through this here in my town so we have generators strategically placed on the street now. The other problem is you or I may take all the precautions we like but for whatever possibly good reason others can or wont. Brush clearing is up to property owners. Not everyone agrees on what that looks like. Some neighbors may have trees overgrown in powerlines and they are to old or it's a rental so no tree trimming is done. Dude I got people down the hill with Sherwood Forest.😄 They are protecting there privacy, respect. It's not cooky cutter.

so they don't need a new helicopter because they just got a new helicopter - so let's get the helicopter salesman out of the room and start making contractors build wildfire proof housing - east lake is a disaster waiting to happen ..

Every single person needs to take responsibility and fire harden their homes and their yards and their landscaping. We need massive change and we need it quickly. A couple of helicopters and more firemen are not going to do squat when the humidity drops to less than 5% and the winds blow at 90 mph.

I got a quick story. I hiked the Devil's Chair Trail in the San Gabriel Mountains. It's a dry moderate hike with spectacular views. I found a long round file just off trail. Someone said it was for a chainsaw. Looking around I could see some trail maintenance had been done. I couldn't imagine hiking a chainsaw and the gear to keep it working all the way up there. So think on this.

So when i had a vacation cabin in a resort town in the mountains, if i did not get there for a while and the grass and weeds grew too much, i would get a notice to cut it or they would do it and charge me. Made sense to me from a fire prevention perspective. My question is why city, county, and state governments do not do it to themselves? They own parks and vacant properties all over Southern California that are horribly overgrown with grass and brush and are just waiting for a devastating fire, but do nothing to mitigate the risk. Gross negligence by our elected officials? Can home owners sue them if they are damaged by such negligence?

@ChristeenThorpe8 күн бұрын
Redleg frogs? Our neighbor was told by a "county agency" to dredge the creek, the reeds were a fire hazard. So she complied and began. Another "county agency"came and said "STOP! ITS A HABITAT FOR A REDLEG FROG!" NOW SHE IS SPENDING HER MONEY DEFENDING AGAINST THEM BOTH! ( HMM... BREAK YOURSELF DOING THAT. COUNTY TAKES YOUR PROPERTY AT AUCTION? THEY GET THE RIGHTS TO THE GOOD CREEK AND WELLS. HMMM) by the way, when the fire came down the mountain at us? Those reeds kept the fire at bay long enough for our access road to evac. For us to check on neighbors and get out safely.

One thing consistent about government efficiency is how consistently inefficient it is. San Diego County is in dire need of a DOGE. It will never happen with Democrats in charge the way it never happened with them in charge in Washington 😩
