The World’s Strongest Fishing Knot, Episode 8. Find out if the San Diego Jam knot is one of the World’s Strongest Knots. This is part of the Worlds Strongest Knot Series where we have embarked on a mission to settle all disputes into which knot is actually, the World’s Strongest Knot. Grab a brew or a drink and join me as we unpack the results of this West Coast Tuna Knot and see how good it actually is. Take a look and see why this knot is so popular due to the impressive results with Fluorocarbon. So one thing was very apparent in testing this knot in both the braid and mono categories, the Standing end is the shortfall of this knot. However things are very different on the Fluorocarbon side of things.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ABOUT TOIT FISHING ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Fishing has been an integral part of my life since the age of six. From the early days of riding my BMX bike with all my kit down to our local fishing spot, to nowadays where I find myself daydreaming far too much about the next fishing trip with friends. I want to pass on to any child, teenager, or adult something that I have designed, learned, improved on or seen someone else do. This is the side I love about fishing - the learning, questioning the boundaries, maybe improving then teaching or passing on. At my core I am a fisherman, love the bite especially when it’s on, but right next to that is this desire to meet, talk and see what other fisherman are doing that is different to what I know.

Use the San Diego jam knot for the simple fact that it has two cinch down areas to secure the knot great for my steelhead, fishing and salmon fishing not just for ocean fishing but river fishing as well works good on 8 pound mono line as well as fluorocarbon try it you will definitely like it

I really appreciate your thorough testing. Wondering how you determined to use only 3 wraps for mono and flouro. Standard SD Jam instructions say 5 wraps, but some say more for lighter line, fewer for heavier. Mono may have tested better with more wraps because it's softer, so it might be worth a second look. Thanks

Hi NorCalArcher, appreciate the kind words, Thank you. With the equipment I use the frequency of the load cell laser measurement(Hertz) is so high that any type of movement you get within a knot you can see on the load graph as the knot is stretched out. On all the knots I test I do kind of like a "development" stage. Where I test as many options as possible looking at every aspect I can possibly think of when getting a feel for the knot and see how areas such as wrap counts behave within the knot. So on the SDJ knot I did in fact test many variations of wrap counts. Any movement within a knot is when things go south very quickly for a knot, especially for monofilament. I refer to monofilament as the stickier line as when you cinch it up it begins to almost stutter the movement of the cinch until it stops moving depending on the amount of force you exerted on the knot when you tightened it up, lubrication helps with this. So on the SDJ knot there is a pinch point on both the top and the bottom of the knot and the wraps tend to bind also. So for example when you tighten a 50lb mono SDJ knot and you exert say 30lbs force to cinch the knot up the knot will settle at 30lbs. So now if we look at wraps for example if you use say 5 or 7 wraps there will be more line within the knot to move or pull out than say 3 wraps. Also on less wraps you will find if you exert 30lbs of load on less wraps the line/knot all binds together a lot tighter and hence less movement. Sorry for the long winded reply but it is a good point and worth detailing as others who read this comment may have thought the same thing. So its kind of less is more with wraps counts on mono, unless you introduce slipping because there is too few wraps like say on a clinch knot. But the SDJ has a upper and lower pinch point for the line so its less likely to slip and did not slip on any of my testing. Tightlines and have a nice weekend.

@@toitfishing Interesting. I've used as few as 3 wraps in a hot bite when I'm in a hurry, and it's honestly worked fine. I think I'm going to try 3 wraps for a while and see how it does, I'll reply angrily if I get some pullouts :)

Hi Warren. Just found your videos. The best knot analysis out there. Thank you for sharing. Lately, I've been trying a knot called the orvis knot. When trying at home (no equipaments though), it seemed very strong and easy to tie. However, I lost 4 floats when fishing in a small pond. I was able to get all of them back and the line broke at about 1-2 inches from the knot. 3 of them broke when setting the hook (not very hard though), but it was not the first fish after tying the knot. One broke in the middle of a fight, 10 minutes after hooking the fish. The curious thing is that there was no breaks at the knot, but at about 1-2 inches from the knot. I couldn't feel a lot the tension when they broke. The line just seem to snap very easily, but all of them had been through a lot more tension before that. I attach my line (25lbs mono) to a float with a swivel and the hook is 50cm from the float, so the breaks were not from fish teeth. There is no line burning when tying this knot (specially in the place where they all broke). Do you think the line close to the knot can get weaker after a lot of stress?

Thank you for sharing those videos. I love them! I am also an engineer and I am kind of obsessed about my fishing knots. I am very glad I found your channel. Sorry about the long question, but I thought you could have an answer for that. Also, it would be really nice if you could do a review about the orvis knot. I'll try your knot in my future fishing trips.

Hi Marcelo High praise indeed, thank you for your kind words. I have got the Orvis knot on my to do list. I am currently looking at Line to Line connections and will be back over to Terminal Knots at some point. With Regards to your knot I would maybe look at a few things to try and solve your issue. The Orvis knot from memory has a pinch point very much like the Pitzen Knot where all the loading is focused on a particular area. I know the Pitzen knot also draws out alot of line from the tag end as you tighten the knot so yes some of this line may get damaged depending on how fast you tigthen the knot and how much saliva you use and whether you hesitate when drawing closed, steady and slow is preferable with Mono. Maybe for now when you have time take a look at the videos on the Pitzen knot as it may have similar issues to the Orvis. I would check your line also. Mono does have a tendency to suffer from UV(sunlight) and suffer with age. So it may be an option for a new spool of line. PS: Dont use the Pitzen Knot there are much better knots out there. The pinch point really is problematic for Mono and Braid. Tight Lines

@@toitfishing Thanks for the reply, Warren! The interesting part is that it seems that the lines broke really easily, but after being under a lot of tension from other fish. I usually set my drag really tight. Can knots (or maybe, nylon lines) get weaker after fighting a fish? Do you think I should retie my knots after a good fish? It didn't seem that the lines broke in a part affected by tightening the knots (not sure if it could draw 1-2 inches of line on tightening), but I cannot be sure. Looking forward to your review of this knot to see if that's the problem. I've been testing my knots (without equipments though) for a long time and always wondered how they worked under tension. Your videos brought a lot of answers to my questions. Keep up the good work! Thanks!

Hey Marcelo, apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I only just saw this message, I normally get reminders when people comment. I did a braid analysis video recently and this went in to a lot more detail on how braid behaves. I am planning on doing a monofilament video soon also and I will talk about exactly why this sort of thing happens in mono. Let me know if the braid video helps in anyway? Tightlines.

Dude, I tried your knot, the Toit knot, Bloody amazing! I have started learning your knot at 15 pounds. Only, at three wraps underneath, I had some failures. Mostly my fault I think! But, I had some major success with only two wraps underneath and three over the top. I was able to snap the line 4 times from 5 no closer to the knot than 150mm ( snap loading ). Please try it and get back to me. Thanks so much, this is now my go to for knots. In one hour, I have become good at your knot, I love it!

Hi Barry, glad you love it, your comments made my day so thank you for that, that’s is great that you are testing and trying the knot out, agreed on the really thin monofilament 2 wraps up and down or as you say three back is gonna be fine. I normalised the three wraps for mono and fluoro and braid it’s 4 wraps. It’s easier to remember for folks, especially the kids starting out. Yes this knot is really good, and I am glad you have tried it for yourself and tested it. Just keep it moist you can actually cinch it in your mouth with saliva on the knot it really makes a difference. Glad you love it. Thank you for your support and kind words. Tightlines.

@@toitfishing Hey Warren, this knot you have figured out is the best knot I've ever tried, bar none! I test it with a one meter trace from a swivel, wrapped around my hand, I pull around half weight to the line and then jerk the line holding the mid power between jerks until either the line brakes or the knot. Let me tell you, I was bloody surprised to snap the line. I couldn't wait to try it again. Out of five the fourth didn't brake the line (broke at the last coil wrap ), but it smoked line line anyway! Moving on to my trolling lures now. Set at 80 pounds, I will renew all my lure traces with this knot, and fish with new confidence. Walked into my fishing buddies place and told him of it, to my surprise, repeated it. Teaching him now. Thanks so much for sharing your efforts Warren, most appreciated here! Barry. NZ 🎣

It is interesting that you never got 100% line test knot strength on any of the mono. I have to wonder what brand you used. Last year I was in a knot tying contest sponsored by Izorline at a tackle show. We were given 20lb mono. I tied a Palomar knot and came in second place. My line broke (not the knot) at 36.something lbs (I don’t remember how many tenths above 36 it was). The winner tied a SD Jam. His line (not the knot) broke at 36.something + a tenth or two. The line failed before our knots did. I saw his SD Jam knot. I don’t know how many wraps he did but it looked closer to 7 (I use 7 wraps, I’ve tied it so many times I have a good idea what it looks like).

Hi Jason, glad you like the SDJK, there are 2 more variants I will be testing, the one you mentioned above is one of these. I will need to assess the data and movement within the knot to be able to answer your question, which I will in due course. Stay tuned, tight lines.

Rafał Dudek, I had a brief look at the setup, I am not sure how repetitive that knot testing equipment is and how many line weights and knots they based their data on, however I am certain the improved San Diego will have good test results. Looking forward to testing the 2 improved versions I know of for the SDJK. Tightlines and thank you for posting the link.

@@toitfishing I stumbled into this video on a post incident study session. Caught a nice smallmouth today, but as I was just about to get him on shore, the bass thrashed and my improved clinch knot unraveled on 8 lb fluorocarbon (first time using fc). The fish swam away with my lure. Feel bad for the fish. I couldn't find a video of you revisiting the improved SDJK, but many videos from others suggest it over the standard. Do you believe the improved version of feeding the tag line back through the eyelet and then doing the SDJK holds benefit over a standard SDJK for fluorocarbon?

First I really like how you present the information and enjoyed the video. Why only 3 turns for the San Diego jam? In your how to tie video you use 4 turns. I personally use 6-7 turns which seems average for guys on the boat in San Diego when chasing tuna with 20-40 lb.
@toitfishing
@toitfishing 3 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the feedback, really encouraging. For all the fishing knots I always test for the minimum amount of wraps that will hold a particular line type and strength. I always provide the least as this gives a starting point which people can then add too. You will also find a lot of knots like this knot and the Uni knot actually perform better with less wraps especially in thicker lines. For example if you add 8 wraps to 100lb mono and cinch you will find it’s really difficult to get all the wraps to bind down tightly. Whereas if you go for three wraps it will fully lock down thru the entire knot. I also found on knots like the clinch and pitzen if you add too many wraps it ends up leaving too much slack in the knot and then when you test to break, this slack within the knot begins to move and the knot fails as it’s rubbing internally. Hope you had a great Christmas break. Tightlines.
