Did Little Waimea the other day -- still trying to figure out how to get to Crabs which I guess is pretty steep with lots of tight turns?. Might try big Waimea. Bowtie is a great trail for folks to session to work on balance. The last section of Sidehill going don can be really bouncy if you're on a hard tail. Tunnel 4 is definitely harder on tall folks on 29ers. I have been clocked a few times and I'm 5'6" on a 26" hardtail. It is amazing how many fun trails there are at PQ if you know where to look. Thanks for the tour. Seriously, everytime I am out riding I wonder, am I going to run into Chris???

@MTBTrailReview
@MTBTrailReview 3 жыл бұрын
No worries! It feels weird to say, but I think Tunnel 4 is my least favorite trail out there, mostly because of my size. I know people love it, but I'm 6'2" on an XL 29er. It's just not a good combo. I think you get way more bang for your buck on the west end. Little Waimea was a blast, and Crabs is super fun. Definitely stop me and say hello if you ever see me out there!

As you noted Big Waimea is definitely not a blue trail. With it's steep section and sketchy ruts throughout the bottom half, it is one of the more advanced trails in the PQ area (which is my backyard). The other trail that is good in the "Crabs" area is Tight and Crabby. Not as steep as Return of the Crabs but more turny and you don't give up your elevation as quickly....
@MTBTrailReview
@MTBTrailReview 3 жыл бұрын
I was surprised it was labeled as a blue after riding it. I'll have to check out Tight and Crabby the next time I'm out there.
@kyledavis635
@kyledavis635 3 жыл бұрын
@@MTBTrailReview Tight and Crabby is the uproute that most people take to get to the top. I'm guessing that you took it up as well.. I don't want this trail to get too much action, but you really need to try the new trail Tang, which is in the northwest section of the PQ area. Very good, newly built trail. I would say it has some Greer Ranch in it's features/feel....

@MTBTrailReview
@MTBTrailReview 3 жыл бұрын
It was recently removed from Trailforks. From the west end, you take the first left (I think) after you cross the suspension bridge. From there, it's a pretty long pedal going west. Keep an eye out for single track. The climb is not obvious, so it may take a little exploreing.

Im curious how is a trail illegal? Is it because its private property? Or erosion control or what is it?
@MTBTrailReview
@MTBTrailReview 3 жыл бұрын
It can be a variety of different things. In San Diego, it's usually a trail that was built without permission, whether it's public or private land. There are also many trails that are closed to mountain bikers, but open for other uses.

What’s up mtb trail review! Dig your videos. Coming down to SD from LA for the weekend and riding Big Laguna Trail tomorrow (skipping Noble this time, don’t want to end up in the ER!). What’s your recommended best intermediate loop for Sunday, PQ Canyon? Lake Hodges? I’d ideally like to avoid crowds or a ton of hikers, and I prefer gentle flow and some mild tech but don’t love the steeps or exposure. Thanks man
@MTBTrailReview
@MTBTrailReview 3 жыл бұрын
Big Laguna will be super fun! PQ and Hodges are probably the most crowded trail systems in the area, so I would avoid those if you want to avoid crowds. La Costa in north county is really fun. It's a little techier, but it has really good flow, too, especially on the blue trails. It's also really easy to navigate with Trailforks.
