Hairstylist here! If you can find a color line that has a double neutral (usually marked NN), that will help cover your grays better. Because it'll be double pigment, level 5 will appear darker to the eye and wont appear as hot roots. If you can't find an NN, you can use a level 4. I wouldn't recommend using a level 3 if you're planning on keeping your hair the the cooler medium brown that it is now, as it may be too dark. Hopefully this was helpful!

Summers as a kid are so different than summers as an adult, in so many ways. I think having little to no responsibilities is the biggest thing. Heavy flow and love the flex disc! Only thing is sometimes when it gets full the seal breaks so I typically wear a pad or liner to catch any leaks. I’ve used the disposable discs and the reusable. The reusable can be messy to clean up in public so I usually only use those when I’m home and use the disposable for longer wear times.

I love love love the flex disk I’ve been using it for 4 years now and I have a heavy flow. When you pee it’ll dump out by itself so if you see blood don’t be alarmed. Then you can do a kegel to get it back into place and keep going about your day. They’re the best. I like the disposable ones but also the reusable silicone disks are really nice too and easy to clean

I think a level 4 would be good with 20 vol but you might want to get a grey coverage double pigmented line. A line that's specific to covering those resistant greys. I know professional lines only have these kind of colors not sure what they have at Sally's.

Hairstylist here! ❤️ try level 4 with 10 volume! You actually don’t need 20 volume for all root touch ups. Your natural hair is so light, that 10 volume and that dark of color should work great! I use Moroccan Oil color on my clients and literally use 10 volume wayyyyyy more to cover gray than 20 volume 🫶🏼

hi love! hairstylist here of 15 years- you can use your level 5 color but drop the developer down to 10 volume! 10 volume is for grey coverage and will give you the depth you are looking for without the warmth (: you only need the 20 volume if you are going lighter than your natural color!

@@secret_spots 10V will lift the cuticle layer just enough for deposit and coverage, 20V will lift the cuticle for lift (lighter level) and coverage, but grey hair doesn't need any lifting bc there is no pigment left, so it only needs deposit. 20v can also be harder on greys bc it opens the cuticle so much that they greys don't cover, and since she's only looking for a level or so lighter than her natural she doesnt need a higher developer to lift her 😊

The issue is that I'm a natural level 7 but want and end goal of about a level 4-5, but with 50% grey. I tried 10 vol in the past but it didn't seem to cover the greys enough

Disc’s were a life saver for me. I’ve never used the disposable but the reausable flex disc is SOO GOOD, super easy to put in and out and there is no suction. I’ve been using it for a year and a half and couldn’t be happier. Recommend period underwear or a liner while you get used to it. For newbies who are not used to tampons, I FEEL YOU! I was a pad user, so i was a bit intimidated using this but give yourself GRACE & time when you transition! Good luck!! Also, NEON!😜

I’d try a 4N with 10vol. (licensed Cosmo). I’d even add a little bit (1/4)of an Ash -(5 NA Neutral Ash or something with a blue/green tone in it to help cancel out that red tone! Hope this helps!!! 💖

If you like the idea of a period cup, you might have to try different brands! Different brands feel different when used. I love the flexcup - the same brand that you bought in menstrual discs! whats nice is the flexcup has a pull string, super similar to a tampon, so I find its more beginner friendly too :)

For the root color, I'd try mixing a 4 & 5 together to start and then go to a 4 if you're still not getting the result you want. I wouldn't go straight to a 3, that will look almost black. Make sure you're leaving it on long enough, like 35-40 minutes to fully deposit. If it's not covering grey you can always "pre-soften" by painting the color straight from the tube onto your hair, then mix your color as usual and apply right over the top.

@@taylorwynn no problem! I'd always err on the side of caution with darkening color since you know what a pain it is to lift out! You can also try different colors, like if you did a 5N, maybe try adding some ash in next time to control the warmth as it lifts. Ash colors also appear darker than warm colors.

Neon, Chica. Regarding the Tirtir, I am older than you are and have learned that putting it on using a brush is better than using the pad that comes with it for more mature skin. I could only wear a BB cream prior. That stuff is miraculous.

@@ericalampley480 I found using my brush where I kind of stab/dip it into the sponge and then kind of do the same thing on my skin for a bit is helpful. Eventually, you gotta swirl your brush but by that time, it is pretty much worked in and looks great.

You don’t need to use 20 vol with you’re colour. Use the lowest volume think it’s 3 vol I use this on my mum’s hair and she has grey roots. Hope this helps. Love you’re videos x

I would do a level 4A (ash) or even 4NA (neutral ash) with 20 vol. I would leave the roots on for 40-45 minutes to make sure the color does its full process to cover grays. If youre 50% or over with gray I would try to find a color line specifically for gray hair. I would look at sallys and see what they have. Youll definitely want a blue/green base to it to cancel out any orange/red tone which should help your roots not turn out so warm.

I love the flex disc! I’ve also tried the saalt one and find flex more comfy. I’ve used the disposable and the reusable. I have a heavy flow and have no issues. One thing to note-some women experience self dumping when they go to the bathroom. That does happen with me sometimes, but I have no leaks otherwise!

I LOVE flex discs! I've been using them for a few years now and it's been the best switch. The great thing about heavy days is that you can make room mid-day for more flow by bearing down while going to the bathroom. It'll empty out some of the collected blood, making room for more until you're able to change it. Can't do that with an absorbent product!

Honestly, I have 98% grey and I use either a color depositing dye or gloss or a 6- 10 vol and it always covers my grey. I was told the same thing about using 20v and I stopped doing it 6 years ago due to breakage, I have very fine hair... I am pretty sure the color of you regrowth is due to the red base in your natural color. I'm a natural red head and even with being mostly grey now I have to color correct my hair to neutralize the red. What I would do is use a strong purple or a blue shampoo on your regrowth or add violet booster, wella has one at Sally's to what ever she you use to counter the red. For example if I died my red hair brown it would turn out brownish red even if I used a cool brown, because of the red in my hair. I hope this helps.

Hairstylist here. The level you want is going to vary greatly based off the brand you use. And you need to make sure you get one that says gray coverage like a 4NN.

I did research the line I used and 4.0 N was for grey coverage. I think the problem is more the 10 vs 20 vol developer with the amount of grey I have but with a dark end result.

@@taylorwynn you typically shouldn’t get warm roots like that if you are going darker than your natural, even if you use 20 vol. 20 volume is needed for gray coverage to be able to penetrate those stubborn gray hairs. That being said, if the amount of coverage isn’t AS important, you can use a 5 or 10 volume developer and hopefully avoid those warm roots. I have a few clients that I use a 4NN with 5 volume (because of scalp sensitivity) and it does still cover quite a bit of the gray, it’s just not 100%. If you use the same line same shade and switch to a lower developer and still get a similar result, either go darker or switch the line you’re using. I’m not sure if you said what you were using but I know you had a favorite line you used before for your blue black. Maybe try that line just do a 4 or 5 instead.

Hair stylist here! (13 years, color specialist) My honest recommendation is to go back to a professional. What you want is achievable, but NOTHING at the store will cover the grey without lifting the roots warm and blend into a light ashy brown. Unfortunately you're looking at another color correction situation 😬 no more box color!
