How can you consider Yaz a quality player? Maybe part of the problem is that the team feels the same way!

Posey got hip surgery in '18 and did poorly in '19, because he was a shoulder swinger not using his lower half grounding out weakly to third. After taking '20 off AND resting, Posey was HEALTHY and had a great '21 season. This's what happened to Corey Seager in '18 when having a bad season and 1/2 with Dodgers. When Seager was healthy in '20 and '21, he had monster seasons. IOW, some injuries take time to heal, which's what analytic geeks can't figure out.

Giants are at a crossroads having to answer bigger questions and make smarter decisions. 1) Who will be the Giants GM? 2) How does Posey process veteran players who had bad seasons or bad 2nd halves and does he keep, demote or trade them? 3) How will Posey and his new GM improve Giants thin core of solid players? 4) How will Posey and new GM balance the roster with youth and veterans? 5) Will Posey and new GM add more power or more contact hitters to the lineup?

Yaz does not hit well enough to be a starter. I wouldn’t mind having him around as a fourth or fifth outfielder. Lee, Ramos, ?, Yaz, and McCray as our OF. If we can’t fill that hole from FA, then we will have to go with Ramos, Lee, and Yaz as the starters with McCray fourth. I wonder if Casey Schmitt can play OF. He has range and a cannon of an arm and was hitting well at the end of the season. He might be an interesting option in our OF. He needs a position now that Chapman is signed.

Adames has some crazy reverse splits, like .230 better OPS against righties. I can't figure him out. He has these wild swings year to year in defense and offense. A HSK deal is probably more value for the money you're paying, but they've got enough money to spend so idk if we should even be worried about that. (Especially now, controlling the entire bay area market :/ ) Also the Giants have had a team wOBP in the 15-20s spot for the past 3 years. If they're able to find a new hitting coach or new staff to get them even to like 12-13, let alone top 10, the pitching and defense would give us a real shot at the wild card. We can talk about upgrading positions because there are marginally better players here and there for sure, but imagine a hitting coach who adds like .035 OPS to everyone. Chapman's OPS was like .04-.05 better here than Toronto and he had a resurgent year. Since a coach can theoretically do that for the whole roaster and because the Giants have underperformed in situations with RISP, which is a strategic problem rather than a skill problem (i.e. hitting coach's fault), finding a Donnie Ecker-type coach might be the secret key to a great season.

I just don't think Bellinger would hit well at Oracle.
@Redpoppy802 ай бұрын
I really don't think Ramos can handle Oracle RF. He doesn't have the instincts and route running to me. Our RF is almost as hard as most Center Fields. Now if he got a lot of reps under a good coach maybe he can figure that out, but I am skeptical. My problem with this outfield group is that it is fine, but we need more than "fine" we need "impact", and this group isn't "impact". I really don't see how we upgrade this outfield without releasing some players and taking risks on big upside players which will kill our weakening floor. I just don't think that this group of players will ever come together in a way to be more than a sum of parts. Again, we need to pick up 10 wins to be relevant. That is NOT happening, and we need to change our outlooks.

Stay if they do enough to upgrade the infield then there’s a place for Yaz with the hope Matos forces the issue. Yaz is that hard nosed dude with heart like Chapman that Posey wants to fill this team with

@ZacTresselАй бұрын
They simply can't resign him. In literally no scenario is it logical to pay him $10 million. Too expensive to be a 4th or 5th outfielder and simply not good enough to be a starting outfielder on a good team. Lee, Ramos, and Matos can be the base options and then obviously go for Soto. Buying high on Santander probably is a bad idea
@dumbguyheath42642 ай бұрын
I would not underestimate the Giants trading for Bo Bichette. There are rumors he is unhappy in Toronto like Chapman was. Also, there is a video the Giants put up where Chapman says Bichette’s defense is underrated. I am not sure Posey would be a fan of Adames recently wanting to fight a Mets player in the parking lot.

Yaz is the best defensive outfielder the Giants have! His bat has been lacking for the past 2 years, but I'm noticing a trend in MLB. There are a lot of outfielders who can't go back on a ball hit deep. Ramos and especially Matos, are so so outfielders. In fact, Matos is a disaster in the outfield. As for attracting big names, it seems nobody under 30 wants to play in SF, so that leaves the usual, sign players late in their careers who want 3-4 yr deals. No easy answers.

If the Giants can sign or trade a legit 40HR DH then Yaz in RF is good. 110 OPS+ with a good glove and smart base running is valuable
@Redpoppy802 ай бұрын
I agree that a 40HR DH would fix a lot of offensive failures, but Oracle turns 40HR hitters into 30HR or less hitters and then the problem is actually getting those type of hitters to come here which they will not do willingly based on history. So how do we actually GET one of those hitters?

They would have to pay Yaz about 10 million as a 6 year arbitration player. If they non tender him he becomes a free agent and will get a contract from someone for a lot less. You know what you’re getting with Yaz these young guys are unproven. If he’s signed you won’t be able to trade him with that salary.

Posey needs to make a big splash. Give Soto 630 mil for 14 years. Just pay the guy. Looking at Harper and Machado contracts they are bargains now. Give it couple years it will be a good deal. Would you rather have Chapman or Machado? Machado signed 300mil 10yr deal. Now we paying Chapman similar money but he’s older.
