San Francisco lunch date!

Hi Bill and Lisa, it’s Shirley Soria here. Being Chinese and born and raised literally in San Francisco Chinatown, I was happy to see you visiting Chinatown. Eastern Bakery is an OG place and is well known in the Chinese community for their moon cakes and their coffee crunch cake. I remember as a little girl growing up in the 60s going to Eastern Bakery for their egg sponge cake and moon cakes with the double yolks. Yummy!

It’s Shirley again! Your next stop was at Pier 39 for clam chowder at Boudin’s and I have to tell you that I like Boudin’s clam chowder but my personal preference is the clam chowder at Chowders, which is right across from Boudin’s at Pier 39. Back in the 90s, I spent many a date night at Chowders where we would share a bowl of clam chowder, an order of chicken strips and an order of fried zucchini. Boudins was always packed so we tried Chowders on a whim one night and found that we preferred it, plus we could get fried zucchini and chicken strips too. Try it next time you’re at Pier 39.

As a resident of SF since 78', I would recommend other places. No one really goes to Chinatown for dim sum anymore. Many ppl go to Koi Palace of Daly City. For Chinatown, unique places is Beard Papa (Dragon Beard Candies), Golden Gate Bakery (Egg Tarts), Capitol (Chix Wings). Or you can try the Seafood Cioppino from Tadish Grill (Oldest restaurant in SF), B Patissarie (Kouign Amann), Arsicault Bakery, San Tung (fried chicken wings), Cinderella Bakery (Piroshkis), or PPQ (Dungeness Crabs & Garlic Noodles).
