I was eight years old when this song was released. I'm not sure anymore but I think "San Francisco" was the first song I ever remembered all the lyrics to. In my opinion, Scott McKenzie still has the best contemporary male singing voice I've ever heard. That's not to take away from other great singers but he proved that you don't have to sing at full volume or close to shouting to make an impression. Beautiful song too. - J

My teenage sister and her boyfriend moved there about then. I was only seven years old at the time, but I knew something special was going on there. We lived about ninety minutes from The City and she'd show me pictures she'd taken of the concerts and hippies. Even today with her pushing 70 she tells me stories about life in San Francisco during the Summer of Love (and beyond).

Sorry, I'll stick to the original . To me it's much better because there were o enhancememts, nor augmentations in those days. I was 10 years old when I heard this song back in late July 1967 , Summer of Love. Just over a month earlier The Monterey concert was going on with a plethora of rock groups. It wasn't as huge as WOODSTOCK ,but it was the sign of the times with the Vietnam War raging furiously on; my uncle would eventually lose his life their in mid March 1968 , the tail end of TET! I remember the 60s very well, mostly from 63( John F. Kennedy assasinated 11/22/1963 or 11/23/1963) to 72 when the whole turbulence of that time table occured!

That's Wrecking Crew session players Joe Osborn on bass and Hal Blaine on drums, Gary L Coleman played orchestral bells and chimes. Mamas & Papas songwriter John Phillips plays accoustic guitar, electric guitar and even a sitar in the song. But seriously, I never noticed the hand clapping before! McKenzie and Phillips were originally in a folk trio The Journeymen, along with banjo artist Dick Weissman. McKenzie played accoustic guitar on this song as well and sang double-tracked vocals. Phillips wrote this song with producer Lou Adler in 1966 and released the song in May of 1967 to promote the Monterey International Pop Festival.

We all knew these were the most exceptional artistic compositions we had ever heard at the time they came out but what we also didn't know was that they were the greatest music songs of all time. The music of the 60's and 70's blew away everything that came before it but nothing in the past 5 decades has been able to touch them. There was no place for SLOPPY AMATEURS and I might ad 'NO PLACE FOR GREAT PRETENDERS" either. The high standard of music(musicianship) has been abandoned and replaced with mundane racket on the airwaves today. We went from world class song writers, singers, musicians and performers to blatant talent mocking buffoons that are not fit to share the same airwaves of former masters and legends of rock. They could never equal alone rival the musical acts of the 50,'s 60's and 70's and I blame the recording studios for allowing these tone deaf amateurs, great pretenders and classless freaks who have pulled down the entire music industry to their own mediocre level! When everyone is a star, no one is! When everyone is a musician, no one is! What we have today is a complete dumbing down of the music industry. The entertainment industry has been hijacked by people who have no knowledge or appreciation for what real music is! Today's music is a non melodic, rancorous mass of noise produced by great pretenders who should be ashamed of themselves and seek another area of employment.
@XY_Dude4 жыл бұрын
Spot on. My family and I were digesting what the difference is between that era and later years. The newer music can be fun - but does not typically carry musical weight. E.g. Pink Floyd's "Pleasantly Numb." The orchestration and harmonies are really good. There is real gift in writing this way. Music then had depth and soul in it. Music like from Led Z. Many tunes are so re-listenable. No so, typically, now. Scoring, orchestration, content, and body make for a memorable and always-wow piece. Many were gifted with great variety (Beatles) showing musical acumen. Inspiration - a key element that is lacking now. Many songs were simple, yet carried depth. Gone.

I keep coming back to this enhanced cut over and over again. I've been listening to this song for 52 years, and the added harmonies have made this anthem nothing less than a hymn. God almighty, it's that good. I've tried to find EVERY song you've enhanced, and in my humble opininion, this is your BEST work yet. Dont let the naysayers throw shade on your efforts. A lot of us dig this way beyond what you'll ever know. Thanks! Have you thought about adding your magic to Mr. Tambourine Man (Byrds, of course) or Time of the Season by the Zombies? Any video on KZbin can be downloaded by doing this:(1) put SS in front of the word youtube in the location bar on top of page. (2)hit return and click on "download in video browser". It will be saved in your download folder. If you can't find that click on SEARCH feature on your startup menu and it will come up. Click on that folder and look for the name of that video--drag it on top your desktop and hit play. I think all videos on KZbin are mp4 format and should play on any newer computer. If not just download a free mp4 player or convert the mp4 to another readable format like mp2 using a video converter tool. There are many other ways of recording the audio (if that's all you want). (1) You can use a audio program like (Magix audio cleaning lab) to record anything that plays on your desktop. (2)Run the audio out of the headphone jack and into another computer (audio in) terminal, digital recorder etc. Hope this helps! Kenn
