"San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" is a song, written by John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas, and sung by Scott McKenzie. It was written and released in June 1967 to promote the Monterey Pop Festival.
McKenzie's song became an instant hit. The lyrics tell the listeners, "If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair". Due to the difference between the lyrics and the actual title, the title is often quoted as "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)". "San Francisco" reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and was number one in the United Kingdom and most of Europe. The single is purported to have sold over 5 million copies worldwide. The song is credited with bringing thousands of young people to San Francisco, California during the late 1960s.[citation needed]
In Central Europe, young people adopted "San Francisco" as an anthem for freedom, and it was widely played during Czechoslovakia's 1968 Prague Spring uprising against Soviet rule.[citation needed]
The song has been featured in several films, including Frantic, The Rock and Forrest Gump (Wikipedia).

Scott died on Saturday August 18th 2012 in Los Angeles. It was a warm beautiful day. I was at a beach bar drinking and enjoying life with friends. All of a sudden a girl came in and as she sat down with her friends at the table next to us I heard her say "hey everyone did you hear Scott Mckenzie died today?" I was stunned. In an instant I was back at UC Berkeley and off to his concert. All those memories. I just sat there alone with my thoughts and cried.

I was born in 1982,I discovered how beautiful were those years just listening the people that lived those times, listening to the music of those years (one of the best music of ever for me) and watching movies like "Forrest Gump". In the 2022 I still listen to the music of 70's,80's,90's. I'm sick of nostalgia 😔. Maybe it's cause today music is meaningless.

Same. I'm 30 (born in 1992). The song takes me to an idealized era that is impossimple to reach again. San Francisco will never again be a cheap, care-free place of experimentation, and classical liberalism. I find myself wistfully holding onto this notion that I've never experienced and know we never will again. I love it all the same.

Same - I'm 30 (born 1992) and it probably my favorite song. I'd give anything to experience the Apollo Missions while I was coming to age in my 20s... the unbridled optimism. But I wouldn't miss the Vietnam War aspect.

Nathan Abrantes Don't believe any sweeping generalizations about hippies. They were humans, and so came in all manner of human strength and fragility and failing. I grew up around a lot of adults who were part of that movement and many were really fine, kinship oriented, community loving, do-gooders who weren't just about drugs and whatnot. Many committed their lives to trying to make the world a better place. I am so happy that they influenced my childhood and education. And there was a whole lotta love and beauty in most of that music.

Nathan Abrantes . It was a special time to live. I was born in '55, and the only way I could describe growing up in the 60's is this : everything seemed 'new', much like the spring time of a 4 season Turning. ( spring, summer, fall and winter ) I think that we ( collectively ) are in the winter time of the 4 seasons and much like winter, things are cold, survival of the fittest. And nothing grows.( great book on generational turnings titled : The Fourth Turning )

stephen stern my father was in the 1st Air Cav in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart. whenever there was a fire fight, he and his brothers would be dropped in via helicopter to wreak havoc on the VC. he wont talk about his experiences there but all i know is many of his brothers perished horrifically right before his eyes... so, no. he didn't spit on anybody. despite this, whether he agreed with the war or not, he understood that he was drafted and had to serve his duty. And this was only 10 years after his family emigrated to this country from the tragedy and poverty that was Post WWII Europe. He came here for a better life and appreciated what the US offered his family. thus he loved the 50's and 60's. contrast a man like him to those who WERE born here, shirked their responsibility and spit on the good, honest soldiers (non-baby killers) for doing what they had to do. they didnt even realize that my dad and the other Euro immigrants and black guys were the expendables and were expected to die). an as if the war experience wasn't tragic enough, they had to get spit on when they came home. never mind though. getting spit on by a bunch of entitled hippies who did NOT appreciate what they had was nothing compared to the Nazis and the miserable conditions he lived in as a child, so he dealt with it!

I don't know if you have be a millionaire. Probably today yes. But in 1975, my husband I actually rented an apartment for get this..95 dollars a month! We had a landlady that was about 100 years old. We moved into our first apartment which was a bit run down on the outside. But on the inside, it was done in Italian rosewood. We figure the house was so old, it was probably 95 back in 1945 and she never upped the rent! Sometimes we'd try to pay her and she'd say, 'oh but you already paid me'. She was so sweet, we could never take advantage. Her name was Amelia Castenoli. I'll never forget her.

Julie thank you so so much for your very well written comment . It means a lot that you would take time out of your day to tell me about your early life . It’s fascinating to me to read about people’s lives and how everything was before me . I couldn’t imagine life without a microwave ! And I am young I am 18 almost 19 in about a month . I’ve always been a bit jealous of the freedom of being able to play with friends freely and go out on walks people had before . The world is much more dangerous today . I grew up having to learn that and feared a lot of things . Sadly I don’t connect very much with my era . And I will admit it makes me pretty sad sometimes . (I don’t want to be like those people who say “I wish I was born in a different generation” but I honestly wish I was) I spend everyday living as if I’m in any other era but this one . I don’t connect with people or many things of today . Which is why I don’t have any friends . I’m alone all the time and spend all the time at home in my room . I can’t remember the last time I really went out with friends . I’d rather spend my time listening to my Carpenters record or whatever I have at hand and drawing . Or watching documentaries about the the 70’s or whatever year , Woodstock , anything just as long as it isn’t from this era . But there are maybe a FEW gems from this era like KZbin , some of the tv shows , and a little bit of music that I can carry with me until my later years . :) thank you , I too hope you have many years of happiness and longevity of life . Your comment has made my night . ❤️

Carina karon I disagree RcUniverseGuy. I was born in '82 and I teach college history. I see what is perhaps the most progressive generation of students in my classrooms. The complaints said about the Millennials in general are unfair and uncharitable. There is no one baby-boomer to lay blame on for what happened after the Counter-Culture ended. Collectively there is plenty of blame to go around. But never should you generalize about a generation, about a group of individuals, nation-states, or anything else. Nothing is monolithic. And don't write off your generation so quickly. I have to put people back together after they come out of the stifling experience of K-12, but the fact that the public education system has been broken is not their fault. The "Catcher in the Rye" element of their lives is as strong now as it ever was. My colleagues who teach English don't know how to present "Catcher in the Rye" to let their students know their resentments are valid. They don't understand that my belief on how you do this to students is don't bullshit them about the world they're facing that's been left for them. Don't bullshit them. Tell them the reality of the situation.

***** Technically, I'm a Millennial as well. But just barely. Cut off between Gen-Xers and Millennials is 1981. I'm '82. Those of us between '80 and '84 are caught between the markers of two generations. We're the last to know of the world before Internet and adaptable enough to understand the new world with the Internet. My advantage is being able to understand both sides of the older crowd who know something was lost with the constant connection but know that the Millennials don't know what it is and simply that the world has changed and the digital component of life is still being absorbed into our lifestyle. The digital universe doesn't have to mark the end, it's more of the energy crisis and the political paralysis that's doing that. I might ask who shoved an iPhone and an iPad at their kids to get some quiet time, by the way. Somehow it's youths' fault that their parents bought gadgets for them so they could have free time back. It's almost as if these people believe they would have resisted the technology if it had been available to them when they were younger. Or as if they're immune to it now when I spot just as many older people addicted to their phones and iPads. The hypocrisy of the baby-boomer generation defies comprehension, to me. But there I go grouping them all together, you see? It's way too easy to do. But I know what happened to those who stuck it out with the idealism of the 60s, the rest of their generation took a steaming dump on them for "not growing up" ever. Can't tell you how many times I've seen the idealistic baby-boomers get marginalized for not leaving the 60s in the past (in terms of the idealism).

This is a music that is 100% connected to the 1960s. It has so few connotations that it is so strong. It is to hear and immediately return to the period, with what was good and bad, a perfect melodic picture. I was a child at the time, but I wanted to be in my 20s, even at the risk of having gone to Vietnam, the horror of the horrors of that time, but that's it: a portal song for the 1960s.

I was 7 years of age at the time, we had just moved to a farm to be self sufficient. The hippies were coming and going all of the time, I loved to sit and listen for hours on end the philosophic discussions. Fifty years have flashed by, for the past 25 I am convinced that the road to this happy idealism is via Jesus Christ, not what the churches push which is polluted, but Jesus words and deeds alone.

In 1968 I was 13. My uncle, who was a student at UCLA, took me to a love-in at Griffith Park. As a hormone filled teenager, I thought I was in heaven. All the young women there were not wearing bras. It was mostly a anti-war demonstration. The hippie movement was going strong in LA then. Far out, peace, groovy and long hair was the order of the day. Not long after that my uncle took me to an anti-war demonstration in front of the Federal Building on Wilshire Blvd. But, when I turned 18 I signed up for the draft. Nixon stopped the draft when I was 19, the age most got drafted. I saw many of my friends come home from Vietnam either messed up or not at all. Gas was .35 cents a gallon. At 16 I rented a 2 bedroom apartment for 145.00 a month, furnished. I was working as a receiving clerk at Pronto Market making 1.55 an hour. My checks were between 80.00 and 90.00 a week.

@@AlcibiadesMD Agreed. This song reminds me of those days growing up in LA. All the hippies were preaching equal rights, peace in Viet Nam. The vision of equal rights, from then to now, has changed dramatically.
