I was on the beach in San Francisco many years ago when the tsunami alarm test happened. It was surreal. Everyone just freezed and looked with terror at eachother to see if anyone would start running. But no one moved an inch because we were all scared. When we finally heard that it was a test we were relieved, but I feel like I learned a lesson from that. In a disaster a lot of people will freeze, and it's important to make the resolution before hand to act fast and not wait to see if others will do something. It could save your life.

I used to hear the Tuesday Noon Siren every Tuesday during school. It’s pretty helpful as it reminds you that it’s Tuesday noon since I’m not the person who keeps track of time. Its actually an outdoor warning system, which is tested every Tuesday at 12. There’s actually a guy who goes there every Tuesday to say it and I remember once, there were two people fighting and everyone could hear over the speakers😂

I lived and worked in SF for many years. This happens every Tuesday at noon. My boss I had at the time, and I, would refer to this as "The Noon Bell." FYI: It is not a tsunami warning siren, it is an air raid siren. These are holdovers from World War 2. After Pearl Harbor when much of the west coast was experiencing what were called blackout nights, meaning the city would not turn on the street lights at night, and you had to have blackout curtains, and you weren't allowed to drive at night. The only way you could go outside at night is if it was clear and you had a moon out. They were afraid of Japanese planes finding their way to our cities for a night raid. They were so serious about this at that time, that had you stepped outside at night and lit a cigarette on the street, you could be fined or arrested. The city still tests these sirens in memorial, and it is referred to as "The Victory Siren" now. There's actually a really good short documentary somewhere here on KZbin for it. If you like, I'll see if I can find it for you.

This is an ATI-HPSS 16.The HPSS-16 was the first siren in the series as well as the quietest. Originally, the HPSS-16 came in a similar form to the Federal Signal DSA, using two arrays with 8 100W drivers. This was switched to the current Kingstar horns later on, with four Kingstar horns per array, one per direction. Each horn has 4 100W speaker drivers, for a total of 1600W. These are driven by a single 1600W amp, meaning these are prone to failure as if the amp fails, the entire siren is out of commission. While this is the smallest official siren in ATI's lineup, versions with only two or three speakers are also known to exist. Rare models use square horns with a single 400W driver per horn. ATI rates this siren at 121db at 100ft.

These sirens used to be mechanical, and were installed in WWII in case of air raids, but they were kept as a general warning system for tsunamis or nukes or whatever. They get tested every tuesday at 12pm, and were replaced around a decade ago with electronic sirens that play a recording of the original sirens + the voice at the end.
@jasdevi5012wato Жыл бұрын

It's very interesting to know the US and UK shared the same idea. In the UK Wer kept a lot of the old sirens operational for flood alerts. There's one up in my valley that gets tested monthly. It's just an old air raid siren from the war but the noise these days is of no threat nor worry because flooding here happens every year and none of us are strangers nor scared. I've lived in the East Bay 44 years. These alarms get tested a few times a year. It's always weird to me. That sound can be a warning of something that could end my home, my favorite place to be - something weird for a 5th grader to think - one of those sirens was across the street from my elementary school.

Living in San Francisco, I had a ton of nightmares about tsunamis thanks to this, including ones where my brain timed the dream to coincide with being woken by the siren. Was glad to move.

Rememember when i was a kid back in the late 80’s here in Norway we had bomb sirens tests going off all the time where we got drilled at school to escape to the bomb shelters in case of attack from Sovjet forces. It was dangerously close to a nuclear war back then. These sirens reminds me of back then

So many tests & actual warning sirens use the wailing tone as a default. During the Cold War, the wail was reserved solely for attack warnings, or tests thereof. Kudos to Hawaii for getting it right. They test both the tsunami siren (solid tone) and attack siren (wail). They’ve had to test both of these monthly ever since North Korea’s missiles became capable of reaching the islands.

the sirens have been there since WWII, when they were installed in case of air raids. They kept them around (but in early 2000s replaced the old mechanical ones with these ones) for the cold war and because of tsunamis and other potential emergencies.

Where I live in France, we have national alarm test every first thursday of the month. I remember how my belgium boyfriend panicked the first time he heard it, he woke me up and began to put some tape on our windows and doors while yelling "omg I think the nuclear center exploded, hurry up help me" since we were living next to one. With the adrenaline I started to help him and it's only a few seconds later that I understood what was happening, I laughed so hard that day !
