The hullaballoo about this airport is entirely misplaced. It's about politics and money. No one has taken a look to ascertain whether the testing data is tainted somehow b/c some people want to build housing there. It would be an epic nightmare for the area. To say "we're going to build a park" and imply everything will be roses and peach pie is the same as the ugly landgrabbers who are making excuses to install a "city" surrounding Travis Air Force Base. Are these screamers even aware of the potential national security threat around Travis that could impact the entire state and our country adversely if it goes through? I seriously doubt it. Was the testing done independently? How was it done? Who paid for it? Why aren't they testing around SJC? Also I believe the entire aviation industry is phasing out leaded fuel. They've come up with a new way to process fuel so it won't damage the airplanes. No one bothers to explain that. Reid Hillview has been of monumental importance with respect to disaster response and preparedness. It's literally been a lifesaver more than once when Loma Prieta hit and also our terrible fires up in the foothills. It's also an educational center for the aviation industry. The industry, and our country, are woefully short of pilots. The kind of training people can get at Reid-Hillview is indispensible and needed. Reid-Hillview airport is an irreplacable community resource that will continue to prove its mettle if given a chance. Think we aren't due for another Loma Prieta or worse? Think again.
@Matt-xu3lb Жыл бұрын
It has been proven allready the testing data is flawed and that the lead cited in the ground was from earlier industrial uses in the area. The city just wants to redevelop the airport to increase the tax base and allow developers to make a buck. It is very wrong. Soon electric airplanes will be common place, they are allready flying and Google, Microsoft and all of the other companies developing autonomous vehicles in that sector will want that airport. There simply is not emotion at Mineta for GA planes now.

Which neighbors want it closed?! Vote Pete Ortiz out of office!
@davidclark3304 Жыл бұрын
Mineta Airport (SJC) is primarily turbine-powered air carriers and charters and it is the primary airport for San Jose. Closing it would be a major inconvenience because passengers would have to go to SFO, which is most of an hour drive from SJ, and longer at certain times of day (the light rail will help). Closing SJC would not make sense in the way these protesters talk because there are relatively few gasoline powered airplanes that operate regularly out of San Jose but some do certainly purchase fuel there. That one interviewee is right that many aircraft are required by certification laws to operate on leaded fuel for the sake of safety, but this report does not mention, and the reporter and the politicians may not know or are not admitting, that unleaded fuel has been in development for some years and will likely be on the market before RHV closes.

Folks living around the airport are low income folks. Prob only bought there because it’s the only place they could afford. The airport should have worked more proactively with the low income residents than to maintain their elitist attitudes. After all, most of all flight activity from RHV is leisure activities from flight schools. The touch and go from 9am-9pm none stop is a little excessive.

In the FAA you usually will end up working where you want, but moving to a different facility is neither easy nor quick. I'm just pointing out that many of the other controllers I worked with, who worked SFO and OAK arrivals, and were responsible for Reid Hillview departures (As well as San Carlos Airport) would have been overjoyed to see either or both of those airports closed down. Trying to mix mostly light slow aircraft that departed north from them, and had to cross the finals for both SFO and OAK, which were loaded with large commercial aircraft, was pretty much never a fun time.
