City planners should focus more on building affordable housing in downtown, instead of urban sprawl.
@x-men69-967 ай бұрын
why? The landlords lobby the Democrat politicians. Why would they build more?

Weekends, sharks games, and events at the tank are when downtown is packed with people, weekdays not so much. The camp they were talking about that was under 87 was no joke
@neutrino78x2 ай бұрын
yeah, it's doing quite well. Since white collar mostly works from home now, you don't expect it to be really busy on weekdays especially during the daytime. But that place is pretty busy at night. I lived in downtown for two years, then had to move back to one of the suburban areas. I wish I could move back, but I have to get myself into a better place financially. 2025 is looking bright for me, that's the good news. 🙂

This is fake news literally. Downtown San Jose has always been more popular due to its safety. Oakland and Hayward residents go there for a good time because their own city is so bad…
@MrDarthvis7 ай бұрын
Yes, relatively safer than Oakland etc. but the crime and homelessness is still there in sj.
@neutrino78x2 ай бұрын
how is that fake news. Downtown San Jose didn't go that far down during the pandemic so they've had a good recovery. At night there are usually a LOT of people in downtown. Especially around San Pedro Square.

San Jose is a suburb on steroids. Literally the only walkable and urban area is their small downtown. Their downtown would have higher skyscrapers if it wasn’t located near the airport
@neutrino78x2 ай бұрын
That's not true, west san jose around Santa Row is also walkable as are various areas in South San Jose. You can't really expect the whole thing to be walkable, like SF, because when SF became a major city, in the 1850s, San Jose was a small farming town. It grew rapidly in the 70s-90s due to tech, and it's not like that was something planned, my friend (SF's expansion was also not planned). But the public transit works great. I'm 46 and I don't even know how to drive, because I grew up in San Jose, which, being part of the Bay Area, has excellent transit. Just remember, Europe wasn't planned "for people"....back then (ancient times) there was no such thing as a car. So all these cities evolved naturally based on walking and horseback, because those were the only options at the time. If Paris were designed today, the streets would be wider, to accommodate cars. Other than downtown, these are the walkable urban village areas in San Jose, all connected to each other by bus/light rail/catrain: [begin quote] Regional Transit Urban Villages The Alameda Urban Village Plan Berryessa BART Urban Village Plan Capitol Caltrain Urban Village Plan Five Wounds - part of Five Wounds Urban Village Plan Update Local Transit Urban Villages Alum Rock Urban Village Plan East Santa Clara Street Urban Village Plan Little Portugal - part of Five Wounds Urban Village Plan Update North 1st Street Urban Village Plan Roosevelt Park - part of Five Wounds Urban Village Plan Update Stevens Creek Boulevard Urban Village Plan West San Carlos Urban Village Plan Commercial Corridor and Center Urban Villages Santana Row/Valley Fair Urban Village Plan South Bascom Urban Village Plan Winchester Boulevard Urban Village Plan Neighborhood Villages 24th and William - part of Five Wounds Urban Village Plan Update Other Urban Villages Rincon South Specific Plan - For this plan: Please disregard the Specific Plan Land Use Plan and instead refer to the General Plan Land Use Diagram. Future development must be consistent with the Rincon South Specific Plan and the North San Jose Area Development Policy. [end quote]

also, airport proximity to downtown is a MAJOR BENEFIT. In many cities in Europe, it takes you an hour to get to the airport on public transit. In San Jose, it's 20 minutes via bus plus light rail to get there from dowtown. And, this isn't set in stone, but I think its' a good idea...Glydeways is a company that wants to make a PRT system from the airport to downtown and then down Stevens Creek. PRT meaning Personal Rapid Transit. So you get in your transit vehicle at the airport and let's say you wanted to go to one of the Apple campuses in Cupertino on Stevens Creek. You tell the computer that, and it bypasses all other stops except where you wanted to go. They did win the contract in a competition with Bombardier et al. They estimate that the PRT will take ten minutes to get from SJC to San Jose Diridon, as opposed to 30 minutes currently via bus plus Caltrain.

Downtown San Jose isn't a real city, it's more like Main Street USA in Disneyland, existing primarily as an artificial "downtown" to give tech bros places to eat lunch and hang out. If San Jose truly wants to "revitalize" communities, the obvious way to do this is to build *way* more light rail (and grade separate / give signal priority to the existing services) and eliminate zoning laws which gentrify the entire city.
@GArails4087 ай бұрын
Before just building more light rail there should be heavy focus on developing around the portion of the system thay already exists. It could be a great system with the proper approach to reevaluating the land use especially areas on first street north of civic center where the land use is empty office space that feels post apocalyptic. Sunnyvale and santa clara should also do the same around their portion of the light rail system.
@chasemartin44507 ай бұрын
@@GArails408 The existing system definitely needs more development, but I don't think it could ever be a great system until an east-west link from eastside through downtown and up the peninsula is built...

"revitalize" just means slumification, the gentrification is protection from the uncontrolled immigration.
