San Juan, Puerto Rico Cruise Port Guide: Tips and Overview

Founded in 1521 by Ponce De Leon, San Juan Puerto Rico has two cruise terminals. Our guide focuses on the terminal in Old San Juan.
In addition to being the Capital of Puerto Rico and the oldest city in the US Territory, San Juan is known for its cobblestone streets, 16th century walls and fortresses, colorful architecture, expansive views of the water, and Bacardi Rum, all of which can be reached from the Old San Juan cruise terminal for little or no cost.

Glad you like San Juan. But let me correct you,,, the sea on the North coast of San Juan, where San Juan is located,,, is NOT the Caribbean,, is the Atlantic Ocean.

We are going on the Royal Caribbean Freedom of The Seas in March. Is this docked at Old San Juan near the Sheraton? Trying to make a hotel arrangement and want to stay close by.

While most cruise ships that visit San Juan for a day dock in Old San Juan near the Sheraton, there's no guarantee. And if your cruise is starting in San Juan, you'll likely start across the water at the Pan American Pier. I'd recommend contacting the cruise line and/or the San Juan Cruise Port to get the exact pier for your cruise before booking a hotel.

What we have at the north is the Atlantic Ocean. Other thing is that the old San Juan yep is full of history is just a small part of the municipality of San Juan (the capital) so, San Juan has a real modern part that with few others municipalities, form the METROPOLITAN AREA... A city full of everything you need and can enjoy. Also a full tradition of plays (theatre), international concerts and lots of all kind of activities... Another tradition is our arts and painters....our fashion world also... Advan garde...

Thanks, Cecilia! Playa Peña (the beach in the video) is nice because it's so secluded that you won't have many other people around. Although we've never been, we have some friends who visit the beaches to the east of the city (like Balneario El Escambron, Condado Beach, etc.) and love it!

My mom told me there is a bus tour that will take you on a tour and to the airport. Is this true? I have a lot of time to burn between the cruise ship arrival and my flight back home.

The bus tour is available as an excursion from most ships. Check with your cruise line to see if they offer it for your visit. For example, Carnival offers a "Puerto Rico's Favorites with Airport Transfer" which you can find on their website. Hope you enjoy your extra time visiting!

There are many local guides selling excursions when you get off the cruise, but we don't know the specific excursions that are offered. We recommend contacting the guides ahead of time to make sure they'll be available on the day you arrive.

Unfortunately, we did not. We even asked the little gift store at the fort and they did not have any. We usually just pack a cheap one with us.
