Worked there a couple years ago on power restoration after the hurricane. Worked mainly over in Mayaguez area. Never failed when in a parts place or any store we had to visit, just a few words of English and they would run away and another would show up that spoke English. Now driving was a different story cause we had to go up in the mountains and the roads were like crazy crooked and barely enough room for 2 trucks to pass. Really enjoyed the area over in Ponce and Mayaguez I think better than San Juan area.

Watch what you are doing driving in old San Juan. The locals don't necessarily believe in stop lights or stop signs. They are firm believers in the horn in your vehicle. Don't let it scare you, just go with the flow. It is a wonderful place for sure!!!!

I feel sorry to agree with you on the way we drive(not me) but, it is so true. To add to your comment, please take precautions when passing a traffic light. All you need to do is slow down and make sure there isn’t a crazy one forgetting that his traffics light isn’t green. It happened to me one time and I almost lost my aunt. Don’t let this scare you, just like you mentioned before be more careful when driving in PR. Still NY city or Miami or Chicago aren’t that different neither. Uber could be a great option if you get scare.

I lived in PR two different times in the 90s. Another BIG don't I'd suggest is DON'T FORGET how hot and humid it's going to be! Make sure to only bring lightweight clothing! And stay HYDRATED! I had been there for a week and I went out for a long walk and totally passed out from the heat and humidity, so drink your gatorade, maintain your electrolytes. The sun can be super powerful that close to the equator. And also, the way they do rotisserie chickens is fantaaaastic! If you don't eat pork, have the chicken. It's DELICIOUS!!!

All great tips. One BIG one for me is don't be afraid of food stands, food kiosks, and food trucks on the side of the road. Often times the food is great, and the prices reasonable. It might turn out that your best meal of the trip was from one of those. But the biggest one I would say is get out of San Juan, and explore the island. Do some research, get a game plan, and get out there.

Don't forget to take a stroll in the evening in SJ and listen to the coqui tree frogs. Also, grow eyes on the back of your head because there is some crazy driving down there. Pay close attention at all times when driving.
@paulkoza8652
@paulkoza8652 11 ай бұрын
Two points. Mark did not mention that there is still an issue with the power grid in PR. I was there in June and we were hit with two rolling blackouts. This was due to the heat and high use of AC in SJ. They didn't last long, but you need to be prepared. The second thing is driving. If you are ever involved in a traffic accident on the island, have your cell phone handy. The first thing you want to do is take a photo of the other car, especially their license plate. Better yet, get a photo of the other driver and any paperwork they have. I was rear ended in a rental car and after the other guy determined that there were no injuries, he drove off. Hit and run. I assume he didn't have insurance or perhaps a registration. The municipal police in PR are useless.

Paul, you are not allowed to to take other cars license plate, neither to take a photo of the other driver license. Just like any other USA places by doing that you are invading others privacy, which is protect by the 14 constitutional right. Just call and wait for the police. That’s a friendly advice. Just like any other state you can get sue for violating the USA constitutional rights.

A point to know is that any way we allways be hispanic so no matter the political stuff push us to speak english we're allways speak our language... Spanish (I am a proudly spanish writer by the way). Also visitor, you have to undertand that we are a different culture with lot of history and more. Also we are not just beach, El Morro and Yunque... We have museums, galleries, Big shopping malls, theatres (Plays), cities (78 towns with divisions) and many many more...also, universities... And a normal routine like in every place and city. Yes, you need to mix the rice and beans together. Also we have a variaty of beans, stew rice (Yellow, by the way we use anniato) and combination. We use also a system by paying by your phone.

I’m from Puerto Rico and I can tell you that lot of restaurants serve the beans on the side to make it easier and optional for tourists. In our daily lives it goes on the plate my the side or on top of the rice. I have never seen, under normal circumstances, the beans on the side to share. Excellent video! Good and realistic advice. I’m going to add that you should be aware that there is a lot drug dealing gang related crime all through the island and is worst in the Metro Area and at night. Just be careful, be aware, just in case. My own tip: When I go out to get Lechón I go to Guavate, to one of the 1st two places there when you’re going up the road.

You want a simple explanation? Here you go. There was much corruption. Then USA took over. Now there is much corruption but it’s government funded. Oh, they don’t pay federal taxes but they don’t get a federal vote. And they constantly want more money from the USA government. Rather than using USA government money to make their country better, they always wast it then demand more money. It’s a cycle that never ends. Today they are nothing but a bunch of people with their hands out for more government money, like a bum on a subway station. The end.

We visited Aquadilla on Labor Day weekend. While there, our rental car hubcaps were stolen. A popular rental car company scam. They had the lug nut key.

Please listen to the locals. We are having a lot of issues with drownings and attacks on the mainlanders. We are a part of the states but we are not 100% the same. We love hosting people and if you’re cool we’ll even bring you to our homes for dinners and parties we just asl that you respect us.

To help some folks: 1. Beaches: The sign he showed wasn't based on rip tides. It's to mark where a tsunami wave can reach to (none have happened since 1918 so relax). Our beaches can be tricky especially in the north-western side of the island since they are primarily for surfing (Corona Pro Surf Circuit usually has events on Isabela & Rincon). There are small coves of very safe waters there, specially in Isabela called "pocitas". Just ask the locals where they are and they'll point you on the right direction. 2. Flights: Dependent on what you want to do and where you live, there are flights that get to the western part of the island on our Aguadilla airport (BQN). Specially coming from Florida. 3. Culture: We are NOT and I repeat we are NOT idiots, nor uncivilized indians. Don't treat us like that unless you want to have a horrible experience. The island is extremely modern and even though the culture is pittoresque, it doesn't mean we are "uncultured". Respect is the key to our hospitality. 4. Crime: If in San Juan especially in Old San Juan, know where to go. Places like La Perla and Barrio Obrero are NOT tourist zones. Similarly as mosts folks know that stepping in some areas of Harlem, Compton, etc. is dangerous, you should know what areas are a no-go in PR. These zones can be a risk even if they look bright and colorful by day. 5. Accomodations: Hotel prices are not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. Alternatives are Air BnBs and such but be careful as pictures can shine a very different light to what they really are. Make sure you read the reviews carefully before booking. 5. Purpose of Visit: If you are interested in night life and lots of things to do during the night, San Juan is the place. But if you want to relax I suggest you look somewhere to the east of western part of the island. El Conquistador in Fajardo is great and there are lots of boutique hotels and beach front Air BnBs in the west that are a complete dream. 6. Activities: We have so many things to see and do, that my suggestion would be to book a two week stay at least. There's clear water beaches (Flamenco), kayaking, the bioluminescent bays, zip lines, ATV excursions, rain forests, museums, and the list goes on. 7. Temperature: PR is HOT... Our seasons are Summer, Summer Summer, Summer - Spring and Summer-Winter. It is also very humid. If you want to look for the best time to be here and not die of complete dehydration, usually the beginning of the year gets "colder" with mornings in the 70s and days in the high 80s, low 90s. During the summer it can reach way past 100deg feel index. 8. Car Rentals: If you have rental insurance in your credit card it should covers rentals just like in the states. They are a little shifty and try to stick the 30 insurance packages. Make sure you know what coverage you already possess. My suggestion is stick to Avis, Hertz or the big brand rentals. Also understand that what constitutes a mid-size sedan in the states for rental companies, means a compact sedan here. So if you are expecting to save some cash by renting a compact instead of a sub-compact and have 3 or 4 people, you'll be in for a surprise. Hope this helps

I love rincon Puerto rico. GO TO RINCON! If you want to experience true spanish culture this is where you should go . I made memories to last a lifetime when I was 17 years old. Im 24 now. MOST PEOPLE in rincon speak spanish. i fell in love there with a boy who spoke only spanish when i was 17 years old and went there with my best friend.. I also learned how to surf by meeting a local. we did get in a car accident with some locals we met, he is correct people do drive crazy there. I made memories to last a life time. I recommend going to the lighthouse. The people in puerto rico are so beautiful. in rincon most things dont open till around noon time. the litte beach he is standing at was the fist place i stopped at right across the street from our hotel.

Ok, here's one. If you are hanging out in "El Pueblo" and Mass is going on, keep it down or go away somewhere else for like an hour.

Mixing rice and beans is not actually a sin here. There is a dish where the rice and beans are mixed. That’s arroz manposteao.

Food is actually much cheaper in a lot of places if you can get out of San Juan's tourist areas. A Medalla beer is like a $1.50.
