Was impressed with the "boxage" on that crystal, but finding out that it's not sapphire, that's a deal-breaker. As it is, with no SS bracelet (though, seemingly good-quality strap), it was already pushing it, but the crystal seals the no-deal. Understand that a boxed sapphire crystal is quite a bit more costly in manufacture than, e.g., a flat sapphire, but, still, SM should not be using mineral.

The Perlon strap is my favorite 😉 Great photography, you never lose the focus and showing us the watches with a variety of straps is a very helpful service 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Mineral glass is a no go for a San Martin quality watch and yes, also I would certainly pay 20 € on top to get a sapphire crystal.

I have the Longines reissue and I have to say that the SM version looks good. The case back on this one however lets in down- IMHO. The Longines has a bubble- back style, consistent with the era it's supposed to represent.

Being a fan of the Longines this one intrigues me. However the mineral crystal and hands make me want to see if they do a V2. The hands just don't hold A candle to the Longines. Thanks for the review.

Honestly an acrylic crystal would be the best choice. Maintains the look with and can be easily polished if it does get scratched. Sapphire would raise the price and you cant get scratches and chips out of sapphire.
@EscapeWheel2 жыл бұрын
Yes, indeed. If they aren't going sapphire, acrylic is the way to go...and that goes for anyone, not just San Martin.

Most watch reviewers focus almost entirely on the external appearance of a watch. I want to know what I can't immediately see: how accurately does the watch keep time, how accurate is the water resistance rating, how durable is the watch, how often will it need servicing, what is the length of the warranty period, if it is battery-powered how long does the battery last, and so on.
@SergeiVnv2 жыл бұрын
it's a nice watch but it could have a sapphire crystal instead of mineral one for that price. There's no screw down crown - it's a nice touch. And the color variations of the dial (some great pearl one like Seagull has) wouldn't be redundant. Cheers!

I still don't understand why SM keeps using nh35 instead of nh38 for no date models. Cheaper chinese brands do.

They must have a literal boatload of them. I can't imagine buying in bulk they are THAT much cheaper than the NH38 🤷♂️

Nice hands & case finish obviously being sm but that isn't that big of a deal & at that price i'd be looking at citizen & orient all day long with a mineral crystal even the odd seiko , good review but I don't get why you'd buy it at £140-150 i just don't think it's worth it ,when you consider the pagani pd1723 which i'm sure the finishing can't be that bad but i guess its each to his own.
@EscapeWheel2 жыл бұрын
that's true....getting into seiko/orient territory...but unless i'm missing something, nobody makes a similar looking watch to this in the sub "stowa" price range. you may be paying the the styling a little bit here, that's for sure.
@StatelineSportsPod7 ай бұрын
Okay I gotta ask but its a weird question... Ive seen several reviewers wear theyre watch up on their forearm instead of the wrist. Is this a preference thing? And if so why??
@EscapeWheel7 ай бұрын
It's all preference. Some have itabove the wrist bone, some below, some on. Early on I was below the bone, then moved to more above/on the bone. I find it more comfortable not having the crown hit the wrist

Blue strap 1 green 2 the browns 3 metal not the best. I think you would only buy this if you don’t have a cream dial option in the watch box. Most do though The 1963 has a similar vibe and with a few vintage pieces there is no room in the cream dial box.
@EscapeWheel2 жыл бұрын
the 1963 ever really did anything for me **ducks and hides** but yeah, that's definitly one to consider especially since you can get mechanical chrono and sapphire for roughly the same cash.
@goldfools54452 жыл бұрын
What I was saying is, if you already have a watch in that colorway, like I do. Adding this to the collection doesn’t offer much. As a self confessed SanMartin fanboy, I am always on the lookout for a new desire.

I love this simple vintage style with blued hands. However, I wish they had gone with an acrylic crystal and a sterile crown. It would be nice to know how the hands are finished (probably not thermally-blued).

I like the case size and shape, the crown, handset, and movement. But...... The dial looks like an accident in the paint shop.. The crystal material is the poorest choice of three types available. Coarse horizontal brushing on the lug tops ill suits this watch. Price?...maybe when it's on sale. Let's not forgot the unforgivable....the fatal flaw. A squeaky strap.

@daveindevon52402 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I don't think this is an attractive watch. I can see it being heavily discounted in future sales. I do agree with you Steve that SM should concentrate more on the sub-$200 sector though. Their top end models are just too pricey for homage watches, however we'll finished they may be. Especially as the finish can often only be fully appreciated at the macro level. Manufacturers like Baltany are getting the balance right, and selling at sensible prices.
@caktaylor2 жыл бұрын
I agree with all of your points. I know it was a hit for Longines, but I just don't see the appeal.
@Cuccos19 Жыл бұрын
Movement choice of SM is terrible! They have more no-date watches than date watches (Thanks God!) but they using 'ghost-date movement' in their watches. There is the NH38 perfect for the job, but rarely anyone using that beside Baltany.

One of two Longines rip offs by San Martin. Both are overpriced. This one is £150 for shitty NH35 movement and shitty mineral crystal! Anyone who knows San Martin knows they were putting out much higher quality for this price less than two years ago. A darker strap and sapphire crystal would make it worth buying.
