Hello, What a great piece o kit that is, There's something therapeutic about watching rust & crud blasted away. I can remember back in the day Me & dad made a sand blasting cabinet out of one of those plywood tea chests that were everywhere back in the day, two holes in either side for motorbike gauntlets & a perspex screen, It worked a treat off our compressor for small parts. Great progress on this project, Thank you.

Great test of the blaster Mark, great to see your dad staying involved too. I think Machine Mark had better stock up! You are correct about the media blocking our industrial blaster needs a good kick in the tripes from time to time to keep the media flowing! another issue may be damp air from your compressor so a good flowing water trap may help in the air feed. All the best and sty safe guys

Interesting stuff Mark & Jim.. When I was doing my restoration/rebuild, Machine Mart didn't have that particular shot-blaster model. I got the cabinet, which worked really, really well. The drawback was I was limited to the size of part I could fit in it. Even the cabinet used a lot of air, and my compressor had to be given a rest every 10 minuets ..Come to that, so did I 😅...It was still a messy job either way, but to me, the most effective rust remover ever invented. That doughnut compressor looked better that the home made one I used to have.. As a friend once said to me ; "You need mussels in your urine to turn the top nut on that thing !" Your's looked a bit easier to operate 😅.. See you both in a couple of weeks.. Pete

Great work there, it’s a nasty messy job blasting but that looked a decent bit of kit. I had my subframes blasted by the same firm that does our trucks, it gives a great key for the zinc primer to bite too. I’ve never been keen on powder coating though as I’ve heard one little chip and the damp can get under the coating and rot you metal out from the inside.

'Great Video, loved the split screen. I have a cabinet blaster, that too has to be 'stirred' to get the sand to drop down. In the end I welded a bracket to the low hopper and mounted a drill with a bent bolt in the chuck. This would vibrate the often slightly damp sand/media down to the pick up. Useful if you are doing loads of small parts or you spend longer shaking the cabinet than actually blasting!

I bought one of those blasters a few years ago here in the states it works great but of course is messy, and I threw away the hood and got a better one, also I often got static shock from the bugger but with gloves on it reduced that problem, I also found moving slightly away from the piece made the job quicker but there is a limit.Also being anal when i did my sub frame went round and knocked of all the weld spatter from the factory, and yes you do need to put a shit load of media in the tank it get through it fast.

I'm not sure what blast medium was used here (the video uploader said it wasn't Silica based), but DO NOT USE Beach sand, as it is high in Silica. When blasting this Silica is released as a fine dust that will do irresperable damage to the lungs of anyone or anything that breathes it in. Check that what you use is safe. Other than that, thanks for the video :-)

Machine Mart used to have VAT free offer days which gave a good saving on a major purchase but I haven't seen one for a while. Are the media bags expensive? A blast cabinet would be good for smaller items. Also, the cone compression tool, I'm sure these come with Imperial or Metric threads so quite important to get the right one. Good to see that the Green & White Mini shop is still on the go. I remember they had a rallycross Mini but not see any magazine advertising from them for many years. Keep up the good work.
@upbuild4397
@upbuild4397 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Ah that’s really interesting, I’ll look out for that, could definitely be good savings there if they have them still. I paid £10 per 25kg bag for the media, it’s not meant to be reused be I ran it through a couple of times and it was fine.

An interesting video, once again! I've tried a pressure pot blaster like yours along with a (seperate) blast cabinet. I used to find that the blast media would clog up due to condensation in the air from the heat of the compressor. Are you using some sort of air dryer in your set up? I eneded up selling my blast cabinet due to the frustration of it all but I do still have the pressurised blast pot in the back of a shed. Maybe its time to drag it out again for some experimentation.

Hi! There is a water trap on the back of the pressure blasting tank that’s all, but I may add another inline one to help with the moisture. I had a sand blaster attachment for my pressure washer that delivered the media with a water jet. It worked very well and stripped a large cross member with it about 5ft long. It was less dusty and unhealthy so I didn't need a hood. It did a fantastic job, but the nozzle was worn out after the one job. Was wondering how long the nozzle would last on that one? Now I get a local firm to do the blasting, but it is quite pricey at about £200 for glass bead blasting a door and epoxy primed after. About a third the price of a new door though.
@upbuild4397
@upbuild4397 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yeah I watched a couple of videos of people using the sandblasters on the pressure washer, looked very affective. I’ve blasted both the mini subframe and I can’t see any wear on the nozzles yet, maybe if I was using it continuously for a while it would wear a bit though.

I do hope that's NOT regular sand because you know it can kill you, you have to use sand made for sand blasting (with out silica), I use to use "black beauty med grit" my self I use a cheap mask and I always felt short of breath after wards, so be careful use a good mask in a well ventilated place (maybe get an exhaust fan for the green house)...

Hi! We don’t use any silica products, plus alway use proper respirators.

@@upbuild4397 I'm relived to know this because too many people think regular sand is okay to use, I only mentioned it because in the video you didn't say what kind of sand you where using, but all good carry on I can't wait to see the Mini finished as I'm sure you are too hehe...

@@upbuild4397 What did you use, the pebbles suggest it's beach sand, which is high in silica?

What’s a decent compressor for the sand blaster ?
@upbuild4397
@upbuild4397 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is the compressor we used in the video kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoDEmqqErcd0mdk It worked well but just not for very long, we needed to stop every 2-3 minutes to allow the air compressor to build pressure. If you’re patient and don’t mind wait for the compressor to keeps up it works great. We’ve since bought a new upright 18.5cfm 150lt Clarke compressor www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-ve18c150-18cfm-industrial-vertical-elec-2/ , which can run continuously with the 2.5mm nozzle. I hope this helps 👍

I have the very same blaster. I have a 3 phase 5hp 200 ltr compressor and it only just keeps up with the blaster on a low setting. What did you use?
@upbuild4397
@upbuild4397 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! In the video I used a small 7cfm compressor but it was running out of pressure quite fast so I upgraded to a new 18.5cfm and with a 2.5mm tip it work great.
