Sand Dancing in South Shields with DataDaz

Join The MacMaster with special guest DataDaz in South Shields Tyne and Wear in the North East of England for a walking tour of this picturesque coastal town at the mouth of the River Tyne, about 3.7 miles downstream from Newcastle upon Tyne in north east England. Historically part of County Durham, it became part of Tyne and Wear in 1974. Home of The Sand Dancer. Sandancer (sometimes written erroneously as Sanddancer or Sand-dancer) is a colloquialism used to describe people who come from the town of South Shields. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee you were in my home town, I couldnt imagine living anywhere else than here. Now sanddancer I have done some research on this myself in the past. Many many years ago before the Tyne was dredged when the tide went out apparently people used to go from South Shields to North Shields to visit relatives etc, you could skip across the sand dunes so thats one story I heard anther one was back in the 60s we had lots of Arabs stay in Shields due to the many ships that came here from around the world. Next time have a look at the Marsden Grotto its a great spot with some nice history, also the Lawe Top where I brought up. Anyway glad you got to come to our little paradise in the NE

You missed out not getting off the ferry, north shields fish Quay is great with bars ,restaurants, fresh fish shops, and great fish and chip shops.

Enjoyed that one Lee, "Titanic" lol As someone else said Daz forgot about the Tyne Tunnel which isn't far from where you were! I used to deliver around the NE, lovely people and places, never held up when loading or unloading, I believe the nightlife is great too! 👍👍👍😊

I had to Google to confirm but the term Sanddancer simply refers to Yemeni community who settled in the 1890s who arrived to take up jobs onboard ships like engine room firemen. Yemen is at the bottom of Saudi Arabia on the Gulf of Aden.

The first time I paddled in the North Sea at Saltburn it was a hot sunny August day with the kids - my feet physically hurt it was that cold. However when I moved here 25 years ago I thought it was all cloth cap and whippets but there are some gorgeous beaches from Bridlington up to Berwick - its just that bloody freezing cold sea lol !!!! Visited a friend in N Shields one Xmas - my wife left her bag in the car and it was recommended I go get it. I tried but inside about 10 mins the lock had frozen. I put my lips around the lock and blew warm air onto the lock to free it up......left half the surface of my lips frozen to the door of a Fiesta - its the coldest place on earth I have been to.....

I remember when I ran the GNR (2015) my friends and I walked along the beach in South Shields. The queue for the ferry back to Newcastle was long. We opted for a cash-only pub by the pier. We lost track of time. But the captain of the ferry came into the pub to remind us otherwise we'd miss the last ferry! I'd never forget the kind gesture nor the great prices for beverages that Sunday afternoon.

There are lots of theories about the origin of the term Sand Dancer. Records of it actually date from the early 1970s (via a TV show of the time), but that's not to say it wasn't used long before. Some say it refers to the influx in the area of nineteenth century Yemeni seamen; some because of the tendancy to crush glass under the feet in factories; some because of the old music hall act Wilson, Keppel and Betty; and some just because of the sandy beaches.
