If I just got sod and the ground underneath is very much just clay.. I need to fix a bunch of low spots would you suggest doing a lot of the work with topsoil and then sand at the end? Yard also has struggled with absorbing the watering ( Not over watering) would just sand help break up the hard clay underneath.. ( tall fescue sod)

When seeding, is it okay to use the grass clippings from where I scalped and dethatched as a covering to hold the seed and keep the water down? Or do I need peat moss and a spreader?

What's ur recommendation for top dressing or leveling with a TTTF lawn I know I cant cut very low maybe 2 inches at most I assume but I have some heavy dips .....thanx
@ryanknorrlawncare8 ай бұрын
Not very easy to do on taller stuff unless you were willing to bury some of those lower spots and reseed or do it in stages so the existing grass doesn't get smothered

Hello! Please help! After applying sand top dressing (half m3 /100m2) and smoothing it with a leveling rake, I noticed that no matter how I try to level the area, there remain tender, thin and weak horizontally lying blades of grass under the sand. Should I worry about them, or will they come out after a few days? They emerge as a result of a water jet (or water sprayed from half a meter away), but this slightly erodes the effect of leveling because it re-excavates the area filled with sand between the larger clumps of old grass, and can also displace upturned seeds and fertilizer particles. So far, I have applied only half of the planned amount of top dressing, I don't dare to spread more, I would like to wait until the grass grows a little (I cut it into short pieces before aerating the lawn). At the same time, I don't think I can wait too long, because I sowed fast-germinating seeds, and once the new grass comes, it shouldn't be necessary to loosen the soil. What do you advise?

Just getting into leveling. Is there an issue with mixing sand with heavy clay soil? What's your recommendation? I read sand mixed in with heavy clay soil can cause concrete like conditions.
@ryanknorrlawncare8 ай бұрын
Mixing as in tilling it together, yes. I wouldn't do that with heavy clay. Sand capping where the sand stays on top is a different method

Why can’t you use dirt on top of sand? What if you put sand down and then do a full renovation in the future. Are you going to have issues getting seed to root in a top layer of sand?

If I were to add a thick layer of sand to my yard , then till it into my existing soil (northern MN clay), help accomplish better drainage and leveling ability? I am going to tear up my lawn with a construction project, so i feel that now is my best chance to make changes. BTW, just got my 25lb. Bag of your elite rye grass seed. I am excited to try it out.
@ryanknorrlawncare8 ай бұрын
No I don't think that would be a good mix to try to blend together. Depending on the soil properties you could get into trouble with them becoming hard as a rock once it sticks together and dries. Sand capping is safer because it keeps the sand layer on top and utilizes that for better control on watering, fertilizer etc
@jguy048 ай бұрын
@@ryanknorrlawncare that was my biggest worry. I think I'll just incorporate some new top soil when I till it all up and grade it then. If need be in the following years, I'll cap it for more leveling. Thanks for the response, love the content.
