But they have differs use cases. Navy needs fold up wings to store more jets, but that limits max G forces. Also, Navy needs heavy duty landing gear which has the operative word “heavy.” Air Force doesn’t need folding wings so that it can be more maneuverable. Air Force can use lighter landing gear so that weight savings can be either faster, more fuel or more weapons. Combining both of those systems results in lots of trade offs resulting in a less efficient jet.

It's all about the aerodynamical limitations of a kite / flyig wind design: it works like a charm for bombers like B-2 Spirit / B-21 Raider.. but not for fighters, who need - at least for now - massive horizontal and vertical mobile control surfaces / empennage for the more needed "acrobatic" maneuverability. US Air Force can't compromise on that... but the US Navy can.

Not surprised, besides the Navy I’d argue needs priority anyway… due to carriers being the US’s main method of military power projection. The 15EX though…. Hell of a jet, 5th and 6th gen be damned, if it can detect from insane range at high altitude going screaming fast, it will have the magazine capacity of air to air weapons to give the middle finger to most everything. Hyper maneuverability is a cool party trick, low observability is too…. But I’d argue like 18-20 air to air weapons and insane range and detection coupled with Mach 2+ speeds don’t care… with these new radars, if it can see it, it best go cold and run away, if they can….a fusion of F15EX and F-35 could be very, very interesting.

True with 99% of the potential enemy aircraft that face the F-15EX However against a J-20 that is significantly less observable plus has better long range weapons (at the moment) i wouldnt say the F-15 EX would have an easy time I mean the J-20 lacks in some aspects for sure but if it can detect the very large RCS of the Eagle while still avoiding a reliable lock due to being stealthy enough (if) then it will have good chances with the long range weapons to strike and run off before the eagle could really lock on. But we dont know cuz the actual details for this are classified

F-15 is an evolutionary dead end. The moment you base anything on that, you're completely surrendering stealth. which means you aren't going to be operating it anywhere inside of hostile airspace. Or do like the MIG-29 and have an alternate air path to the engines on the bottom that open during high angle of attack maneuvers so air can get to the engines regardless of how it is oriented.

Having wingdrone backup should be priority because drones can make maneuvers and pull Gs than humans can't plus they act as a extra layer of protection for our maned aircraft. I hope the Navy gets this done as soon as possible. Such a feature would be groundbreaking, budget freeing by boosting serviceability, and upgradeability. This would increase flight hours, cheapen replacement parts, create a new standard guaranteeing it's service life by decades. That ALONE is def enough to get DoD money.

He also shared a story about one of the other test pilots who was still active duty and how he essentially gave up ever making 0-6 because he volunteered to be on the program. Gilliland was already retired by then with his bird but it was interesting to me how he expressed compassion for that other dudes career, not sure why the stuck with me. I worked on the JSF program that led to the development and deployment of the F-35 fighter. It was originally scheduled to deploy in 2008. It eventually started deploying 8 years later in low quantities in 2015 and the first mission capable squadron of the B models weren’t operation until 2018, a full 10 years after the original plan. That was 18 years after tue full scale development program was awarded. The F/A-XX is currently where the F-35 program was in 1995. It took Lockheed 23 years to complete operational test and field the first squadron. The F/A-XX concept is more complex than the F-35. I sincerely doubt the F/A-XX will deploy before the late 2040’s, if ever.

Marines don't need this VTOL nonsense or their own jets at all, they can get coverage from Navy or Airforce. If it can take of fand land from a carrier it can take off and land on an airfield. You don't need massive payloads for stealth fighters anymore thanks to the missle truck concept that can launch from well outside of enemy range. The entire concept of separate branches is outdated and needs to end. Sure we can keep the legacy aspects and guys on ships can wear blue and guys on the ground can wear tan and call themselves army or navy, but all the communications, chain of command, and most importantly budget should be one military force. Cool as always. One issue with engine intakes above the wing could be (?) air intake at high angles of attack ... high angles of attack being common in air to air maneuvering. Prob less of a problem than I think due to better engine technology. Still, new maneuvering tech such as thrust vectoring prob can't fully alleviate this limitation of shielded intakes.

Would all the drone wingmen be the same or would they have different specialties? Like one focused on electronic warfare, one with extra missiles for the mission and another with additional radar/detection/targeting capabilities. Kind of like a mini unit in the sky.

Would it be easier for the AF to piggy back off the Navy project? Just removing the landing gear for Naval use and exchanging it for the airforce could save a ton of weight?

The problem with the top altitude of a fighter plane is the Armstrong line at about 62,000 to 63000 feet where gasses leave the blood steam. Higher altitudes require pressure suits to keep the pilots alive (in a decompression in the case of a cockpit with pressurization).

My cousin used to work on Life Support systems on F18's and he said they retired his plane like 5 or 6 years ago. I thought he said that they were replaced by the F35 Lightnings though

Another great video. It seems to me the need for speed and maneuverability for range and stealth this screams just makes one for both the Navy and the Airforce Plus, I see them more as QBs vs actual engagement with the onset of CCAs

I envision the unveiling of this jet coming off the end of an aircraft carrier, and immediately doing barrel rolls and arabatic maneuvers never seen before with a laser and the song, "I am titanium" playing in the background.

You do great work Alex. I would support you for removing comments that call out your need to advertise. You choose great responsible ways to advertise. Also just in case anyone was wondering I got a ground news subscription cause I wanna be informed like Alex H… get educated y’all. Some of you in the comment section seem to be lacking on that aspect of life…

Upper surface inlets can still be effective at high AOA but it takes some careful tailoring of aerodynamics and airframe design. One of Northrop's studies leading to the final YF-23 configuration incorporated these features.

The US Army just chose General Dynamics and Rheinmetall as finalists for the 4000 Bradley replacement IFVs (well, a year ago). Could you do a Firepower series video about this program, the two finalists and the other three that dropped out. Or more generally the current state of IFVs (Bradley, CV90, Puma, Lynx) and their most likely future. Maybe even including anti air IFVs like some CV90 variants and SkyRanger.

I wish you had a video that goes into the Fighter and Attack roles. How are they different? How to F planes differ from A planes?? Seems to me there is a lot of overlap. Didn't P-47's P-51's, Corsairs, P-38's, and Hellcats all do both roles? For me only the A-10 Warthog is a dedicated Ground Attack plane. I would like to see a more detailed analysis and explanation. I feel I know just enough to get it all wrong.

If low-frequency radar shows a stealth fighter's general direction and altitude, could you launch a barrage or long-range air breathing SAMs to patrol the area and rely on their internal guidance to lock on if they get close, given that the launcher’s radar might be too distant to get a lock directly?

Hey Alex, I've been a long time lurker on here.. I'm an Aussie not American (it's contextual). I am going to admit that in the beginning I kind of disliked your style for some strange reasons? There wasn't really a reason. But hey I stuck around and I actually really enjoyed your previous video about the F35 coping flack from the media and doing a light went on for me! Straight away I changed my opinion on you mate. I'm usually pretty good with reading people and knowing if I'm going to like them or not or if I'll even decide to watch another one of their clips? My point. I found myself just yesterday in comments section (incidental pun) giving you props. Then over the weeks and months on KZbin I've began to notice a pattern with your content? You are pretty much one of the first in this category to get the content out there? I found myself watching other people's content just to compare against your videos and very very soon I began to really appreciate what you do. Opinion officially changed. Officially subscribed. How could I not? I need to tell the algorithm to stop now and not suggest more creators on the same topics I've watched on your channel weeks before. This related but unrelated. There is an Aussie KZbin creature Ben from UnchartedX. What I've realised Alex is your persona is intentional to try to connect to the greatest variety of audience to maximise and leveraging this and to appeal to more; the portrayal can seem inauthentic...... That is by no means a criticism btw. It makes me realise that what Ben does is exactly what you are doing 😁 It makes me really want to see what you are like "unscripted and IRL" because I get the feeling that you would be a very witty and hilarious dude packed full of cryptic puns and inside jokes only intended for the intelligent to decypher? Don't worry bro I get you now 😁 your cracks are showing by the way .... Call the last few months political induced delirium. Forgive me for over analysing your character bro. As a person who is autistic that feels like he lives a life walking on broken egg shells; unfortunately due to past trauma from being manipulated......I have a tendency to really critically over analyse as by product of self preservation? You sir are redeemed of any past ill thoughts. Your character style is growing on me I must say. I apologise and I admit that here open to the internet to poke and prod me. Lastly I want to say that I do understand that the creator space at the moment must be a mine field; your content is a flavour that KZbin doesn't like to promote so you are being put the fk under a microscope. I'm sorry mate. I really hope with the change in government and just an ethos of less control over people's speech and an atmosphere that is more conducive to deeper more freely opinionated expression of the 1st amendment. It will take time. I look forward to the day we might get to see a more candid Alex Hollings; akin to seeing UnchartedX doing a live lecture compared to an edited episode! 🤣 It's like night and day comparison and I still love the dude either way. Freedom of speech really allows us to cultivate passion as people become more free to express themselves without cancellation or some sponsor chucking a tantrum. I respect that ground news is your sponsor and seem to be at the core of all the really truth oriented content. Seems a bit of a pattern that I'm getting a growing number of subscriptions across the board with the common sponsorship of ground news. You do really well at explaining how you use it with your content creation; all the others sponsored by them do likewise? It's actually a perfect way to market because you can't make bullshit look genuine. Ground news seems really awesome. I'm inadvertently getting most of my "ground news" offerings directly from the content creators specifically in the subjects that I enjoy? Ironically they are kind of supporting so many creators that I don't need s subscription? Peace and all the best Alex

Say, Alex? I'm guessing the new Navy FA-XX will most likely look something like the now-cancelled McDonnell Douglas A-12 Avenger II or even the Horten Ho 229 but souped up with new avionics even better than what's found in the Lockheed F-35C Lightning II but that's just me.
@regalplays71354 күн бұрын
the big question the navy needs to consider is whether the Ford-class can properly maintain whatever design they choose. stealth aircraft (even the F-35) need more intensive maintenance to maintain their low observability, and that means more support equipment and more maintenance time. You wouldn't want to keep these things parked topside 24/7, and the hangar only has so much space

Any aircraft now entering into production is likely at least 10-15 years behind what is technologically possible and currently being tested. By the time everything is set up and in place to start production the technology is no longer current. Which is why it makes sense to limit how many of any one type of plane are purchased to leave room for the next generation and to make any platform easy to upgrade.

There's clearly more to the story. When the services make decisions that don't make any sense, there's usually a reason we aren't allowed to know. For example, the reason the B-1A was cancelled was later revealed to fund development of the B-2 (and maybe something else).
