Honestly I'm confused about the nb pronouns, as it works in english, but in german we have the same words for neutral as for female ("sie" is them, they and she. "ihr" is her and their). So I think I have to research, how non binaries would want to be called in german, now that I stumbled upon this...but I also never heard about non binaries here and what nb would be called at all...I suppose, more Americans, more nb people, bigger significance and easier grammatical solutions for that in english... If someone is here to enlighten me, please do. Just came to my mind and I wanted to write it down immediately.

Jule Tmann Hi! I'm actually nonbionary and I have been learning German for a few years, so this is a question I've been asking myself for a while. Truly, the form that you use depends on the person because it is quite difficult to use gender neutral terms in German because everything is so gender specific, as I'm sure you know. Personally, I've always used female pronouns in German because she and they are the same word, and I'm fine with more feminine pronouns. Some other people who are nb, however, might feel more comfortable with more masculine pronouns and therefore would would want to be referred to using er and not sie. To sum it up, you would only need to ask and try and accommodate to said nb person because everyone interprets their gender, or lack of, differently. I hope this helps!!

Though the way I saw it here, telling someone you're nonbinary includes telling them your preferred pronouns. That would make it easy :) But that encounter is yet to happen. And yes, German needs a gender, always. It's infuriating sometimes, because we theoretically have female and male forms for everything, feminists are fighting that always the male and female form are used, to not offend females. I hate it. I am female, but I don't care if one uses the female form of my job title, as it's still the same job. I see it as the proper name for the person that does the job and could care less for the "-in" in the end. (Yes, some jobs have names, that deserve a neutral/male/female form, as they have very clear gendered names, deriving from the fact, that there used to be only men or women doing the job, e.g. nurse. The usual german word for that is "Krankenschwester" "patient sister" [derived from nuns doing this job], I totally am for adressing them "Krankenpfleger" "patient carer", as the other term is obviously one-sided. I support that. I'm about titles, that just miss the "-in" to make it female. I have hundreds of examples, where I think gendering is absolutely unnecessary) Every paper directed at a group has to have male and female words, or neutral if possible, you have to declare that up front. It could be not valid, if one group is not adressed right and I think it makes no sense at all. It's frustrating and that's the fight we have right now, before we can come to nb people, as that would open a whole new grammatical challenge. Fortunately they are usually not so obnoxious about stuff like that. /end rant

Also, I never knew the origin of the word nurse, I just knew how to say it to be honest. Thank you for teaching me a new bit of information! I agree with you though, sometimes gendering is important, especially in languages such as German, and other occasions when gender doesn't really matter. The only problem is getting the country as a whole to come to a consensus about it and there will always be a few people who are not happy with it. Changing language and adding things in takes a lot of time and effort, but hopefully one day it can include everyone and make everyone feel valid.
