Well guys, lambing is over... but the work has just begun.
Only this time, we're starting to focus on what eventually be a new branch of the sheep enterprise on the farm.
If you've been with me over the last few years, you would know that we've diversified into wool (because of this audience) and the demand is enough that we decided to go all in and create our own little warehouse to store, sell and ship our Sheepishly Me wool and other fun products straight from our farm.
In the sheep barn, Dr. Rex made an appearance as we scanned our next group of ewes due in late November.

It's really great to see the steps being taken to make wool a valuable commodity again. Instead of just a farming by-product that no one seems to find useful anymore. When Cammy took us on tours of the massive wool processing industry in Britain, it really reminds us how important it once was and can be again.

It meant a lot to share Jess & the family's journey with cancer last year, Sandi. Particularly this past spring when my Mum's breast cancer from 2 years ago metasticised. My sisters and I did our best caring for her and then were with her at Hospice until she passed. I am still processing my feelings of helplessness and grief. You are remarkable in how you managed to care for Jess on top of all of your farm duties. There can be no doubt that the Brock family is strong, loving, and dedicated. ❤

Sorry for the rough year you've had. It's great to have family close. Watching Sandi and the Brock Family has been educational and inspirational. I've learned to ask for help and support as I go through rehab and learning to accept that I'll always need a wheelchair. Though with hard work and new medical achievements I do have hope that one day I'll not need the wheels. Do not forget to take time for yourself. ❤Best Wishes❤

We definitely need more USA, CANADIAN products ( vs. China ) and clothing made from natural products. Hemp materials are wonderful in the heat of summer, costly at this point, but we'll worth it! Question? Can wool be washed or is it totally a dry clean thing?
@daelponto5942
@daelponto5942 8 күн бұрын
@@gafairbanks2434You can’t put it in the dryer, and when you air dry it, you need to ‘block’ it. You can do that by laying the garments flat in whichever shape they take (like a blanket could just be slung over the drying line but a sweater or gloves should be laid flat for a while) because the weight of the wool will stretch. You wouldn’t want to pin up a sweater while it’s still really wet because it will stretch.

Happy for you Jess🎉you too mom❤ I got diagnosed 9 years ago in May on my birthday. Meanwhile my mother was already fighting her own type of cancer too. She stood by me through it all as I did for her as well. She was given 3-4 months. She fought hard for three years. A year after her passing my cancer came back stronger and harder. I as well was given 3-4 months. I requested from my doctors in Maine to send me to Boston Mass. It’s was there I found hope and a team that’s still with me today 7 years later. I’m one out of 100 patients still on the same trail drug. Fighting to see my children graduate from high school and someday hold my grandchildren of course once my children are beyond high school. To all survivors, warriors, and fighters keep on kicking ass! 🤟🏼

Your wool blanket reminded me of a story. My grandpa was in the navy during WWII. My mom and her sisters ended up with some of his wool blankets, some undyed and some black. They were so scratchy nobody wanted to use them as blankets. My mom and aunts have always liked sheep and they cut up the blankets to make sheep stuffies for themselves and their daughters. So I have a sheep stuffy made from my grandpa’s wool navy blanket.

A great way to repurpose scratchy wool blankets is by quilting them between 2 layers of cotton fabric (a quilt top and bottom) as the middle layer instead of cotton batting. Just wrap the edges like a normal quilt and everybody is amazed at how warm and heavy it is.

Piper's TRYING to learn Kinsey's sheep herding techniques, but she hasn't gotten her hunting urge. When I saw that poor baby being "herded" by Piper until you & Kinsey put an end to it. I can't imagine what it told Mama about the escapade! 😂😂😂

As someone who has been reverting back to clothing made of natural materials it’s great to see wool making a come back. I think people are starting to realise that natural fibers are more sustainable in the long run, specially clothing made of natural fibers do last longer than those made of manmade fibers, they also have the benefit of not creating static electricity. Best part is it’s supporting farmers on a smaller scale who would have never of thought to use the byproduct as a commodity.

A trick for making rough wool items soft, is to use s small amount of hair conditioner (about a US quarter size dollop per gallon) in warm rinse water, then do a final rinse in cool water. I have used some of the roughest sock yarn (because it is so much cheaper, and the hubby goes through socks quick, he walks miles a day in his job, and they don't get days off, even in the bitterest cold) to knit his socks. And the hair conditioner was a happy mistake. I wash wool in shampoo, (it is hair after all) instead of detergent and I grabbed the wrong bottle by accident, and he has been a happy man ever since. I also use it on my wool undergarments now too. They were already pretty soft, but now they feel like silk.

Scratchy feeling wool is wool over 30.5 micron in diameter. It has large scales on the fiber which cause the scratchiness.If you go lower in diameter it won’t feel scratchy. Any wool you wear in under garments(against skin)will most likely be under 20 micron. Each breed of sheep will produce different diameters of fiber thickness.

Yes socks. You also might want to reach out to people like me who have neuropathy. My feet get so cold that they do not read on the no touch thermometers. Wool socks are supposed to be a help to hold body heat in the feet. I have some but as you said, so uncomfortable. I would love to try soft socks that will actually help my feet.

Sandi, I'm really glad to see you doing this, and I'm glad to see you branching out into helping other farmers as well. It really distresses me how quickly and completely we have moved away from wearing wool after literally thousands of years of wearing it. Wool keeps you warm in ways that synthetics cannot, as wool is the only fiber that retains its insulating abilities even when wet. Wool still retains 75% of its insulating ability even when there is water running out of the hem, when other fabrics become a negative and draw heat out of the body. I don't bother knitting synthetic yarns at all, and I don't do cotton and bamboo all that much. I work with wool probably 75% of the time. I use a lot of Paton's from Canada, and Bartlett Yarn from Maine. I make most of my family's clothing. I know everyone wants Merino these days, but softness has more to do with how the yarn is prepared than micron count of the yarn. I can take Romney an prepare it worsted, and it will be soft and smooth. I can take Merino and prepare it woolen and have it be scratchy. The difference is worsted preparation combs all the short bits out and orients all the ends the same way so they don't stick into you and itch. Woolen preparation cards (brushes) all the short bits in, and all the ends stick out and itch you to death. Woolen preparation wastes less, but it also pills with a vengeance, as all those short bits work their way out of the yarn. Worsted throws out all those short bits, but then it doesn't pill and wear out. This is the difference between sweaters and suits. Woolen suits are worsted preparation, but sweaters are usually woolen preparation. I'm glad to see you considering wool blankets. I'm not in the market for wool blankets now, but I sleep under one all winter every year. It is nearly thirty years old, and still looks great. I sandwich it between a cotton flannel blanket and a synthetic blanket, which keeps the wool away from our skin, and keeps the heat in the blanket. A well made wool blanket can last generations. One niche you might want to consider is DK weight or sport weight yarn in solid colors. I enjoy doing Shetland color work, and while I can use the Bartlett Yarn that way, they don't have solid true colors. If I want that, I have to import it from Shetland. One other area you might consider moving into if these succeeds is jackets. Since China bought Woolrich, it is getting hard to find the basic, timeless shirt jackets and yoked jackets that they were famous for. They were blanket weight wool, often plaid or two color twill, in timeless designs that were never in or out of style. I've been wearing them for half a century. The old-fashioned wool-lined barn jackets are another timeless design.

Hi Sandi, the new building looks great, and I’m so happy your wool business is taking off. It’s such a good thing you are grouping with other small Canadian businesses, and I love the idea of socks, hats, and my favorite blankets. Doesn’t sound too bad how many sheep are pregnant, especially under the circumstances. Happy and relieved to hear Jess got good news, certainly has been a journey. Sorry you bumped your head, hope that it goes away quickly (the bump,lol). Thanks for taking us along, see you soon.🐑🐏🏗💡🪛🔨💕👍

You haven’t hesitated to try new and or different procedures or tasks to improve your sheep quality and production. You have allowed us to be part of your farm. You’ve been open and honest even when it opens you up to criticism and terrible comments. You’re a professional who knows how to still be real. Thank you for taking us along on this ride with you. I have watched you in difficult times. You are always gracious. We see you lamb till you almost drop and there you are still helping the ewes lamb. I want to cheer for you and often do. I have so many questions and I will keep watching for those answers. I am so very excited about your new project. I know it will open so many doors. You asked about the products that can/will be processed from your wool. I’m screaming Yes and raising my hand for socks, mittens, blankets etc.. I admire your life and work ethic as farmers and wool producers. I admire your hard work to do what you love! 💞

For Mark's wood shop. Look into doing the power in the ceiling. That can keep cords from being a trip hazard. And give flexibility for where to put the wood working tools. The shop is looking a amazing. Love the expansion of the wool items. I sadly don't do wool type crafts (the golden girl's skein looks gorgeous), but would love to try some wool socks or a blanket.

WOW WOW WOW!! When you talked about 4 years ago when you had to throw the wool away, I was thinking the same thing. It just killed me that you didn't have a way to transform it into fabulous products. Now... you've made it happen! I am thrilled that so many people will benefit from your hard work and am impressed by your ingenuity! Your new building is amazing! I can't even imagine the logistical planning it required! Thank you for the tour. I'm looking forward to seeing it all comes together. I can't express how much I appreciate your channel ! You and Mark have taught me so much about farming. I had no frame of reference regarding how much work it takes. Your family is a shining light to the world! I know You tube has its quirks, but without it I wouldn't have "met" you! Just a little birdie piping up to say- I'm excited that the wool is getting used... sounds like you might need more SHEEP! That building looks so nice! You need an electric fireplace in your board room for those cold days! Hope your back gets better! Glad Jess is doing well. As for the additional products, the gloves and mitts and blankets are of most interest to me. My grandma used to use my dad's old wool US Navy blankets and would use the wool as the center instead of batting or cotton and make a quilt out of them with fashion/cotton fabric on the outside. Best blankets ever!🐑🐑🐑
