Spot on tempering the wood with heat. I used to do my baseball bats that way it makes them hard, bone hard. Love the wood grain on this beautiful gun.

He's using heat to 'raise the grain', then he 'knocks off the whiskers'. It's nothing to do with tempering. I wish the rest of the process was available to watch, but sadly, the gun trade is very secretive about its processes.

Regarding the first two steps of sanding and applying liquid . Without giving away proprietary secrets or formulas, could that step be done using Boiled Linseed oil? If so, would that be appropriate to “torch”?
