This is the fourth video I've watched tonight on this subject and by FAR the most helpful! I've been doing at least 5 things wrong HAH! Thanks!

Super helpful - i've been swirling up a storm and within 2 seconds of watching I realized I was sanding all wrong. I absolutely have tipped my sander to get certain annoying spots...whoops...I also rarely have gone through so many grits - I would jump from 80 to 220. I also apply way too much pressure. I think a lot of it is because sanding is my least favorite part, like you said its tedious. Appreciate the video!!!!!!

Came to YT today looking for a ROS alternative for my table top as I was leaving "pigtails" all over the place. You're video is the only one I found that warned of too much pressure applied to the sander. I'd been "helping" my sander by pushing down on it....no more pushing, no more pigtails! Many thanks!

4 yrs later, but THANK YOU! I'm just now getting into restoring old wood furniture, very new at this, and I just came across one of my drawers, and it had scuff marks, realizing I had put too much pressure on the sander! Found your video extremely helpful. Thank you!

You confirmed what I already suspected. I did notice one other thing I was doing that caused swirls. I quit using 60 grit and started with 80 grit.
@kennyc3887 жыл бұрын
Peter, thanks for the video. I just bought that same sander and it is awesome but my technique was flawed and I had some swirl marks on my face frames. I will take your advice, go through the grits with less pressure and see what happens. Thank you!

If I have an orbital sander with a variable speed dial, should it be set at high speed? I understand why you need a clean surface as the sanded debris is often what makes the swirls. No?

I am getting lines in wood when sanding. I’m using hook loop electric sander. Dark stain isn’t coming off? 80 grit is what I’m using. Any thoughts on why it isn’t coming off? Stain is from 1970s

Thanks for the video, I have the same sander, bought a used one, the sandpaper seems to wear down around the edge first and alot more than the the rest of the disc, I compared it to a lower end Makita that I have running on the same speed, sanding the same piece of scrap wood and the Makita wears down the sandpaper(same brand same grit) alot more evenly, definitely no extra wearing on the circle edge like the bosch, I can't really tell if it's creating more swirls as the wood I'm working on is pretty rough still but I thought it was weird that it's wearing down like that, do you have any idea why that might be happening? I checked the screws on the base, it's all tight

Oh my gawd I did butcher block countertops (plural). I used a palm sander, 80, 220, 320. Looked great. I checked for marks. Then I stained. And holy sh*t swirl marks EVERYWHERE. Did I mention it was countertops? And an island? I don’t get over whelmed easily. I almost cried. Really. I put on my big girl panties and sucked it up. Tomorrow I’m getting this sander and I’ll start again. That was a really rough lesson.

What's the best method to remove the swirl marks if you have them?
@DettorreCustoms Жыл бұрын
Start sanding on a higher grit like 220 or 320. Then go back over it at your finish grit (like 220 or 150). Unfortunately thought you’ll have to strip it all down

Hey there! if I already have swirl marks, under an unfinished stain.. can I go ahead and sand off the stain & eliminate the swirls? wondering if I should use a wood filler first. Its looking pretty awful so Ive decided Id like to remove stain & do over with paint :) Thanks! -Sara
@DettorreCustoms5 жыл бұрын
LEGIO MORTIS hi Sarah! You can but you’ll have to sand the whole surface again so that when you restrain the color is consistent. Wood filler wouldn’t do anything. Sanding it down and start again. It sucks, but you’ll be happier.

I have a Craftsman orbital sander I been sanding down cabinets that have a strain and clear coat I was using 80 grit paper it was taking it off fine but now the sander is gouging the wood seems like it's spinning super fast now or something I don't know got any ideas? Thank you

What would you recommend doing if I need to remove swirl marks I missed seeing from using 120 grit to take down veneer finish and I stained one coat already with Varathane Fast Dry in Kona? I'm working on matching side tables and one came out beautiful, but the other definitely has prominent swirl marks.

Same sander! Love bosch! I started using the Diablo sand paper recently because they give you way more for your money, though I can't say the quality is the best, as far as any diablo product goes. Other than that, great videos, subbed! learned a lot from the few you do have.

@@DettorreCustoms I had same problem as above....I created swirl marks BIG TIME! So you mean start at the 80 then move up the line? Will the 80 take out the marks then the others smooth as described? Or will the marks only stop showing after doing all the whole circuit? I'm just wondering when I'll know to move up the line (meaning do I look for the marks to subside at a certain level)?

Great video! I have the same sander, and I've had problems with squiggly lines with pine & cedar. I've not been patient enough and I've used too much pressure. I've come in at an angle to flatten a raised area and now I see where those flaws came from. Thanks!!!!!! PS: if you do a glue-up and need to even up the 2 sides, what tool do you use? Thank you in advance! 😄

The sander he used was a Bosch random orbital sander with hook and loop sandpaper. One way to understand what is said in a video is to click on the settings (a little gear icon) and turn on subtitles.
