Sandor Szabo and Dr. Lee Grable take on "The Golden Greek" John Tolos and Hans Schnabel in a great 2/3 falls match from The Hollywood Legion Stadium in the Los Angeles territory. It's from the early 50's I don't believe this match has been available before. It is the full Championship Wrestling TV show including the opening with the theme but without any commercials. Hugh Nichols was promoter and Johnny Doyle was still listed as the match maker. This is my transfer from the 16mm film I recently obtained. This is one of my latest purchases that I was able to make thanks to the support of the KZbin ads and DVD's I sell.
Sandor Szabo was one of the all-time greats, a former World Heavyweight Champion and a long time California mainstay. There is also a young John Tolos who is beginning a long run in Los Angeles that would culminate in a red hot feud with Freddie Blassie in the 70's. Bill Welsh handles the introductions and commentary.
All the films I purchase are made available to everyone who is interested in the Golden Age of professional wrestling. Please continue to support the ads and DVD's

I didn’t start watching wrestling til the 70’s, and Tolos was always my favorite. So cool to see this match from much earlier!!

I moved to LA in 1973 and immediately began attending matches at the Olympic, and either watching or attending the TV shows taped at TV 13. Tolos was perhaps the greatest wrestler of the old Hollywood/LA wrestling territory. He was certainly the best at promos. By the time I began watching him he had lost the humility he exhibits here and had adopted a vicious wrestling style. I have never seen a match taped at the Hollywood Legion Stadium. Thanks for this video! Doing a little research, I see that the stadium seated 6,100 people and saw its last boxing and wrestling matches in 1959. Oddly enough, the original walls and roof were retained when the building was converted into its current use, a fitness gym.

John Tolos demonstrated his knowledge of the more scientific aspect of the game then he did in later years when he performed as the "Golden Greek" .He was also far more low key on the mic then in later years when partnering with brother Chris-a fine wrestler in his own right. Good match all around as all 4 boys performed well.

John Tolos is the first wrestler I ever recall seeing in my life. I was 5 years old in 1970, and he was going by the monicker of “Maniac John Tolos”. I saw him beat a guy with a 2x4 that had nails in it. It was so shocking to see at such a young age that I’ve never forgotten it.

This is great! Back when wrestling was a real sport, not the farce it is today.

Well it was scripted then too. But it wasn't as outlandish as today's product, so it seemed more real.

Back then seems like they kayfabed more people and it lent itself to a more credible presentation. Then again, the stands are darkened so who knows how successful it was in the end.
