November 2022 - Summer Has arrived in Johannesburg South Africa.
Our Sandponics system is doing well, and the tomatoes are flourishing, as are the celery and lettuce. We had a bit of a tragedy however since the last video we did when we introduced catfish fingerlings. Most were sucked up by the bottom drain and landed up on the plant grow beds. Some survived, but the majority perished.
In this video we show you how we've now installed a net below the bottom drain to prevent this from happening again.. In the meantime the fish tank has been stocked with some tilapia juveniles as we dont have enough catfish fingerlings. We hope to get more in February, so havent fully rejected the idea of stocking it with catfish.
Sandponics has given us superior results, so we are looking at growing that option further.

THXs for the update. Please could You talk about the fish density You are currently using for this 3 grow bed system. Till now I was under the impression that You also supplement nutrients from Your aquaponics system to keep up with demands of the plants. What a miss fortune with the catfish. I assume the intention was to use the catfish in regards to their simplicity, fast growth rate and high ammonia production. Also... what is the size of Your sub tank for this 3 grow bed system ? I assume You wanna keep a constant water level in the fish tank and the retention time with sand is much longer/slower then with gravel or any other grow media. How many cycles do You run per day ? How long does it take average for Your 3 tanks to drain ?... I guess there might be important differences depending on root growth from different kinds of plants, and specially when they get bigger ?

The retention time is very short, we use coarse sand and the water starts to exit the bed in about 5 minutes.

Wow, this is amazing. Do you use a Mechanical filter and a Bio filter ?

No, the grow bed does biological and mechanical filtration.

I like how you have a mixture of peppers and other things. I have lots of strawberry's but am concerned about root rot from the peppers getting into the same water. Has root rot been an issue, and how do you deal with it?
@MyAquaponics1
@MyAquaponics1 Жыл бұрын
Root rot is not an issue with sandponics as its a flood and drain system, giving roots both hydration and aeration in set intervals.. roots never stand in water for long. Flood and drain cycle is controlled by a timer

@@herbertnkusangombe1815 30m x 10m, though for the Sandponics system seem on the video a 6 x 12m tunnel would be adequate

How long does the media last before you change the sand?
@MyAquaponics1
@MyAquaponics1 Жыл бұрын
No need to change the sand.. Some of the more mature systems in the world have been working with the same sand for a decade or more
