When reviewing The Blind Side for the Telegraph, Sukhdev Sandu wrote “Just because the story is true doesn’t make it real.” Director John Lee Hancock chose to frame the film about a black teen who became a football star around his white benefactors, and in doing so may have actually contributed to Sandra Bullock’s Oscar win in 2010 for Best Actress. In this video, I show you how.

@D Leo People with power can circumvent the law without actively breaking it. For example: outlaw segregated public schools in a community, and those with the power and means to do so can just abandon them in favor of supporting private institutions, or they can just move away. There are some things you just can't outlaw in an ostensible free society. Racism is one of them.

I disagree about all three characters doing different things taking away from the movie since that only happened in the 3 act. Prior to the third act (or between 2 and 3rd act) the movie showed them United for one common goal in trying to become successful and then dealing with said sucess. Granted the 3 act (the consequence of that sucess) was the weakest however, the same can be said for many great movies i.e. Goodfellas.

From Oher's book: "I felt like it portrayed me as dumb instead of as a kid who had never had consistent academic instruction and ended up thriving once he got it. Quinton Aaron did a great job acting the part, but I could not figure out why the director chose to show me as someone who had to be taught the game of football. Whether it was S.J. moving around ketchup bottles or Leigh Anne explaining to me what blocking is about, I watched those scenes thinking, 'No, that's not me at all! I've been studying - really studying - the game since I was a kid!' That was my main hang-up with the film."

He wasn’t meant to be portrayed as mentally retarded but he was supposed to present as underdeveloped. His poor early education, home life, etc meant that he was never presented with the same opportunities to mentally grow the way young kids are. If your getting passed grade to grade out of pity, that’s obviously going to affect the way you go about the world, from communication to problem solving to emotional intelligence. I actually thought the blind side presented very well what is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. In the scene after Collins’s volleyball game, Michael is seen picking up leftover food from the stands, concerned that it might be the only thing he has to eat for days. Part of the adjustment of the family was not that Michael was stupid but that things like going to Taco Bell and not having to worry about whether you could afford what was on the menu or not was a massive privilege that they’d never considered before. So when you consider that this boy is helpless and 16 and eating other people’s leftover popcorn and has two pairs of clothes and has no reliable shelter, you can only imagine that the rest of the hierarchy is unfulfilled. How can he focus on his education or friendships or sports or communication with others or mental or self fulfillment or anything when for his whole life he’s never even gotten past worrying about the basic necessities of life?
@cb.on.yt22
@cb.on.yt22 5 жыл бұрын
Stephanie Lloyd but the issue is the michael in real life DID have reliable homes and he WAS capable of normal conversation but the director decided to portray him in a position of desperation to make the White Woman look like more of an angel. It makes it seems like he NEEDED that white family to save him and teach him football, in real life, he had been playing football since he could remember and even formed leagues, but god bless this white family for giving him the gift of football right? Maslows hierarchy of needs doesn’t work in a way that you completely forget learned information when you’re bumped down a tier. Did you even watch the goddamn video????????????

The beginning of the movie when addressing the principal of the school Michael would later join, it was explained that he was gifted in sports. Could shoot a basketball and make it every time. Could play football like a pro. The Tuohuy's weren't there to teach him football. They provided him with the resources he need to maximize his potential. I'm beginning to think you've neither read the book nor watched the movie and instead you're relying on some "woke" youtube video to bash a family doing something good for a fellow human.

I've never enjoyed the Blindside because I felt so uncomfortable watching, however I have a family that LOVES and watches it all the time. Interestingly when you talk to them about it they never mention it from the perspective of "helping" the boy. They like the relationship between LeAnn and her husband. They like the sassy tutor and all American teenage girl that comes home to her family emotionally. They don't understand the white savior trope because they literally don't see his character at all. He might as well be the new home or the father that loses his job and creates more family time, or the Christmas season in a Hallmark movie or any other event that brings a family together. They completely erase his story from things and that feels almost worse. He is a catalyst for their success as a family.

@Jeremy Jones Pointless woke reboots and white savior movies comes from the same place though. It's all about pandering to audiences to make more money because that's how capitalism works. Disney (and Hollywood) keeps pumping out bullshit version of actual issues by placing the blame on a few problematic individuals instead of actually criticizing the system that creates those issues. Why do they do that, you say? Well, the system is in their favor and they don't want it to change. Also it's easier to make movies who seem socially conscious but aren't really to please a wider range of people. I'd love more movies with strong female protagonists (like Mad Max) but instead we get a live action of Beauty and the Beast where apparently women reading suddenly became controversial, even if it never was in that time period in France. It's stupid and it doesn't say shit about real issues. We need more movies like "Get Out" who actually has a messsage to tell and does it in great metaphors, using the media it's in to talk about larger, systemic problems.

I appreciate how you gave Sandra Bullock the credit she deserves not just by saying what amounts to "no harm meant to Sandra" then continuing on with the analysis, but really discussing her as well as the systems surrounding her that led to that particular story and performance captivating the academy. Yes it is a White Savior story. Yes this is a long standing tradition that we need to be critical of. But too often I think our society gets all defensive when approached with critical analysis, seeing it as a personal attack, and you helped to make sure that isn't the case in a kind and approachable way. Glad I found your channel!

Thing is Sandra knew what she was doing. Oddly enough from all her back lashes she then goes to a Netflix movie and falls in love with a black male out of her league instead of one around her age. A 29 year old falling in love with a 54 year old woman with a child over a single white woman his age also being in the house riiight. I wouldn’t even be shocked to find out if they didn’t change the role around and remove the dads parts in favor of her taking over the roles would also be why they wrote out the other 2 families he had before there family. They sure wrote out how he really learned the sport in favor of them teaching him.

Excellent video, and I do appreciate that you didn't slam Bullock's performance even though the film itself is extremely problematic. In terms of her actual work in "The Blind Side," Bullock is actually very good and definitely manages to do a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of making Leigh Anne Tuohy seem like a real person with dimension. It's easy to dogpile her because of the problematic film around her, but judging her work in the movie, I think she was very good. Of the nominees, Gabourey Sidibe should've taken it in a walk, but I do prefer Bullock's performance over Mulligan, Mirren and Streep. With that said, I do wish it had been "Gravity" she had won for.

Swank is a very interesting and unusual case to be sure but I'd argue she is a tremendous actress given the right material, her work in the homesman, conviction, insomnia and the recent Netflix film mother were all terrific . Some of this is Holywood not knowing how to cast an actress like her . Jodie Foster while probably much more successful had some of these similar issues happen to her in the 90s too following her two Oscar wins for the accused and silence of the lambs.

Once again, I am amazed with the consistency of your analysis. I never viewed “The Blind Side” in such a way, even aware of the concept of White Savior movies. As a Brazilian, now I can understand how that the social context involved in 2010 and this movie fits like a glove, and that Sandra’s win is much more about the values Hollywood endorses and the opportunity to acknowledge her well known talent. As a matter of fact, I think her acting in Gravity and loss to Cate Blanchett in 2014 only reinforces her versatility as an actress and what was said here about what Academy voters are concerned (even though I believe Cate’s win involves much more). Congratulations for your channel. I am very grateful to see such an analytical point of view in a subject I love, that speaks universally to our condition. Thank you!

Surah Online - I think you’re right about this. While I personally love Dangerous Minds, I feel this is the movie where studies, and maybe directors and screenwriters, got the wrong idea about the formula of what it takes to show a story of a middle class (or upper) white person who gets a taste of the less privileged lives and tries to help.
@megg.6651
@megg.6651 5 жыл бұрын
The thing is "Dangerous Minds" and "Freedom Writers" are TRUE STORIES. These are not made up by Hollywood to push a narrative - it is REAL. I am a teacher in an urban district and the majority of the teachers are white women - not because hiring practices are discriminatory, but because there are few black teachers applying for these jobs! I don't think we should be demonizing people who go into a very difficult, stressful career because the color of their skin makes some people uncomfortable.
@MM-yb2fy
@MM-yb2fy 4 жыл бұрын
@@megg.6651 Disagree. You're saying that because they are true stories they are not being pushed for a specific narrative is false. There are many true stories out there and there are many teachers of color who have been able to turn things around in an inner city (Stand and Deliver and Lean on Me - come to mind). These types of "whitr savior" stories are being promoted because they make a certain population feel good about themselves.

this is why I hate the Harry Potter movies. You have Alan Rickman, Ralph Fiennes, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Michael Gambon/Richard Harris, ect. and you put most of the focus on three kids that can't act. But that works box office wise because it's a famous book series. Financially it is a huge gamble to place the focus on some unknown kid when you have Sandra Bullock. People also wanted to see women take dominant roles during this time.

@@MsJubjubbird With the Blind Side it doesn't make any sense since it was Michael's story. Harry Potter changing perspective of who the movies focused on would have been a similar mistake making no sense. It wasn't titled Severus Snape - it was Harry Potter. The books were written from the perspective of Harry and changing the lens of the movie to showcase an adult veteran actor would not only have been silly but would not have worked because that wasn't the story. This video is fascinating from every perspective imaginable. Sandra Bullock winning for The Blind Side has always been one of the toughest Oscars pills to swallow so to speak. Gabourey Sidibe was the CLEAR standout that year, considering it was her first folm role ever and she was able to captivate every person who watched Precious. I to this day will never forget how the scene on the staircase arguing with Mary, or the classroom scene will make me feel. I am truly at a deep loss for words more so than any other movie scenes. The Oscars should have embraced the best performance of that year, without the fake shock value of a mediocre hitmaker making a slightly better than average dramedy. This wasn't Sandra's best performance and it wasn't the best performance of the year, by far. It makes me sad knowing that Gabourey probably won't see that podium again and if she does, it will most likely be judged unfairly and some excuse will be made as to why she shouldn't win and not reasoning as to why she should. Be Kind Rewind, thank you for keeping modern KZbin viewers in the loop about Academy history. Not everything that glitters is gold, and you're truly changing lives.
