I don't mind that The Color Purple lost 11 Oscars because IMO only the soundtrack, the cinematography, and Whoopi were contenders out of any of its nominations. However, Out of Africa? That movie was so 1980s Oscar fare and NOT in a good way. It makes Green Book's win much better in comparison and I hated Green Book's win over the likes of so many more worthy films including but not limited to Blackkklansman. I use Blackkklansman as an example because to me, it was like the complete opposite of what Green Book was about and much more on point than Green Book regarding America and racial relations. The only saving grace of Green Book winning was that it stopped 4-time Oscar winner and absolutely horrible movie Bohemian Rhapsody from winning. I was seriously getting scared about that winning after it won it's 4th Oscar of the night.

@@AllGreyEverything I don't think Prizzi's Honor was a classic or anything, but it was a whole lot better than The Color Purple. But then out of all the nominees, Huston's performance was the one that stayed with me the most. I still don't know why, but it did. Maybe it was John Huston's masterful directing and the way he lit her. J S Cicely Tyson still talks about Geraldine Page's magnificent performance in that film. Cicely, after she saw the film, wanted to do a film and role like that of Geraldine Page's and she did that on Broadway by playing the same character in it's stage version. Geraldine Page is a very underrated actress and that's why nobody talks about her. She was a character actress and not a Box Office Star with blockbusters to her credit. While Whoopi is always on TV and black people are always playing victim/whining about this film. Outside US, nobody gives a fuck about Color Purple.

@@gpad1772 Not this millennial that movie gets worse as I get older and watch more films to refine my taste . Anyway whether something "ages well" depends on how many people keep promoting propaganda to market films way after release v. those who don't have those resources. Most people who claim that Goldberg deserved it never watched The Trip to Bountiful. That's because The Color Purple had much bigger and powerful people behind it to keep it going. The Trip to Bountiful was a small independent film based on an Off-Broadway play. Of course it couldn't compete against the likes of Spielberg and Quincy Jones and Alice Walker. The Trip to Bountiful still had legs though as it was revived on Broadway with Cicely Tyson who won a Tony Award for it which inspired a tv movie adaptation where Tyson was nominated for an Emmy. I swear, people like David v. Goliath stories, but only selectively. Here, The Color Purple is Goliath. Anyway, I think those black critics who didn't like The Color Purple were right on the money. It took a great book and turned it into a sentimental immature cartoon. Only Goldberg's performance saved it.

There will always be a dark cloud over the Oscar for shutting out "The Color Purple". It made no sense then and it makes no sense now, especially since TCP has GROWN and has become apart of America's heritage and most classic films in the same way as "Gone With The Wind". G. Page put in a great performance for "The Trip to Bountiful" but W. Goldberg's performance was greater and definitely more memorable. G. Page died 2 years after her win, so I am not as hostile about her win. I can think of two other films of when G. Page should have won an Oscar but not for this win. I remember watching The Trip to Bountiful on TV on my Summer vacation about 22 years ago. It's one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. Even though I never rewatched it, I never forgot the story... and Geraldine Page's character reminds me so much of my deceased grandmother, her strength of will, traveling alone all those miles just to see her old home one last time. That's the only reason we never tried, I mean, we tried, but we never made my grandma come live with us in the city. She'd be miserable outside her village. When she came to our home on my Xmas vacation, she couldn't wait to leave and see her chickens, take care of her garden... The Trip to Bountiful will always be one of the most special movies I've ever seen. Having said that (I always laugh at this expression), Whoopi should've won best actress, The Color Purple should've won best picture. I've never watched Out of Africa and I can't STAND IT! Murray Abraham did (to the consternation of Anne Bancroft, who stole the Oscar from Bette Davis thanks to Crawford's "campaigning skills" LOL). Anyway, we were lucky to see a few of Ms. Page's legendary performances on Broadway. We attended her final performance in Blithe Spirit and waited at stage door after the show, where Ms. Page graciously signed a photo and our Playbills. The next day it was revealed that she had passed away in her sleep. What a memory both of the show and at the stage door! She truly was and always will be a Blithe Spirit. Rest in Power, dear lady. I love your wonderful analysis and the history you bring to life with your videos. BTW we've met the fabulous Whoopi Goldberg, an EGOT Winner, who is fantastic on stage and screen and wonderful to her fans. Why did she have to accept the award?
@mcatbs95 жыл бұрын
@blinkeu Long story but to make it short: Joan and Bette Davis had a long standing feud. That year, Bette and Joan made a movie together (called "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?") although the feud was still there. Bette got nominated for an Oscar for her role in that movie and Joan did not. Joan got furious and so angry. Later, Joan heard that Anne Bancroft (who was also a nominee) won't be attending the ceremony, and she knew that Anne had a high chance of winning, so Joan convinced Anne to let her accept the award on Anne's behalf if she did win just to make Bette mad by the fact that she went and accepted an Oscar that Bette lost. And that's exactly what had happened. If you are interested in the feud between them, I highly recommend you watch a tv mini-series called "Feud". It stars Jessica Lange as Joan and Susan Sarandon as Bette. But only watch the tv show AFTER watching the movie Joan and Bette did together. Trust me, you will not regret it.

I love Geraldine Page so much its a pity she's less remembered amongst the general populous. She doesn't even have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame which when I first learned that sent me into a depressive state.

@Rebecca Woolf A voice-over animated role in an also mostly forgotten(but none the less Brilliant) film is not gonna have the widespread appeal she deserves. I had seen The Rescuer too and can't think of any of the other actors in it same with most non-Shrek animated pictures. She's the perfect character actresses, the type of actor that other actors admire but not someone that the average Bonnie and Bob EveryPerson view with such reverence. It's a pity that the film version of her brilliant stage work was never quite as impactful but she is to me a perfect example of how recognizing talent with awards is a tedious endeavour ahah

So I never really watch any specific KZbinrs or accounts (nothing against that, it's just not something I find myself doing a lot lol), but I'm always checking to see if you posted a new video! I subscribed and now anytime I get a notification it literally makes my entire day. Obsessed with your videos and I'm so glad to see there's people that seem to be just as interested in the history behind these wins as I am.

I was literally overjoyed when I received the notice that this was posted. Great video as always, and so happy to hear you talk about Geraldine Page. Her friend and occasional co-star Kim Stanley was originally approached to appear in "The Trip to Bountiful" but turned it down as she had the majority of work that came her way (including Woody Allen's "Interiors" prior), thus shifting the focus over to Geraldine. If I were an Academy voter, I probably would have cast a vote for Whoopi Goldberg based on merit alone, and easily would have given my vote for Geraldine Page to have won for her exceptional work in "Interiors".

Truly, every performer in THE Color Purple deserved an Oscar. Timeless performances. Crazy, that it was Whoppi & Oprah's first roles. Whoppi lead the cast with such skill, while Oprah stole ALL the scenes she was in. Politics aside, the performances were legendary. Steven deserved one as well!

I've binged your entire channel and have recommended it to many friends of mine who are also film buffs. Your content is incredibly well made, interesting, and engaging. Thank you for all your hard work here. I look forward to every video. (And hope to be a patron soon!)

I always thought Meryl Streep was the most deserving that year. Such an elegantly understated performance that carried the entire film on her own. Had it been a few years removed from Sophie’s Choice, she would’ve won.

I never knew The Color Purple took home zero Oscars.... that is absolutely outrageous.

It was protested and that scared voters away. Spielberg was also resented especially back then.

The Color Purple definitely should have won something that night. Initially I felt that Whoopi should have won. At the time of the award show I had never even heard of A Trip of Bountiful. However, upon watch A Trip to Bountiful later that year, Geraldine Page definitely gave the stronger performance. The Color Purple was a big movie with lots of wonderful supporting characters. No single characters completely carries the movie. However, Geraldine Page completely carries A Trip to Bountiful on her won. She was the movie.

Hands down, the BEST KZbin channel period! Great content, thank you! It’s ridiculously sad how political the Academy Awards really are. But it’s Hollywood, a corrupt ‘govern’ment within its own right. The Color Purple was cinematic gold in every respect, for not ONE award to be given that night was criminal.😠

Excellent commentary but SUMMER AND SMOKE was released in 1961 not 1952 as you stated. I’m also glad you noted that the film version of THE COLOR PURPLE on release was vilified by the NAACP as being stereotypical of certain aspects of African American life but when it was snubbed at the Oscars came very much to its defense. However Spielberg simply filmed Alice Walker’s novel in a very faithful adaptation (by and large). Also as you mentioned it is not unheard of for films with multiple nominations such as THE TURNING POINT (11 nominations) to be completely shut out. By the way, Whoopi’s crowning acting performance was in THE LONG WALK HOME, a film for which she was not even nominated. This happens more often than not, for how else could Taraji P. Henson be completely ignored for the performance of her career in HIDDEN FIGURES?

Not quite, in "The Same River, twice", Alice Walker's loosely defined auto-bio, she submitted several drafts, of a screenplay, for the movie. Consequently, Mr. Spielberg selected portions from her screenplay, while rejecting other portions, resulting in a great deal of frustration, from Alice Walker, and a less than faithful adaptation to screen. Further, Alice Walker stated, that she became ill, while filming in Augusta, Ga and couldn't contribute to the direction/tone of the film with as much vigor as she would've liked. Also, in my opinion, "Corrina, Corrina", is among Whoopi's best work.

Geraldine won a very deserving Oscar. If The Color Purple had been more like the book then I think it would have fared better at the Oscars.

Exactly. Not who is “overdue” for an Oscar. That’s how Al Pacino beat out Denzel for Denzel’s Malcom x role

You have a real talent for constructing your videos in a very clear and entertaining way, the editing is on point and the work you put in research is astonishing. You're also a really talented voice over narrator. So yes, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your content since I hadn't commented a video so far, here it is :)
