Sandwich Dome | Terrifying 25 | White Mountains New Hampshire

November 21, 2020. This hike counts towards two New Hampshire challenges, The Terrifying 25 (T25) and 52 With a View (52WAV)
This is the interesting way up Sandwich Mountain. First, you have to get to the trailhead, which means driving along Sandwich Notch Road (which stretches between Route 49 near Waterville Valley and Center Sandwich). Sandwich Notch Road deserves to be on its own Terrifying list...this narrow, crumbly road will wreak havoc on your car the second you venture above 5mph. If your car doesn't have high clearance, then it might not survive the drive.
Algonquin Trail (4.5 miles with 2700 feet of elevation gain) is described by the White Mountain Guide as rough and steep, with sometimes-slippery ledges and at least one difficult rock scramble. Combine this trail with Black Mountain Pond Trail -- which many hikers have told me should also be on the T25 list - for a truly fun/thrilling loop hike!

1. I was going to say the same thing about that road! We have a Corolla, and I have only gone from the Sandwich side to the Crawford-Ridgepole Trailhead. But we did a loop of the road, Guinea Pond, Mt. Mead up to Mt. Israel and then down Wentworth to the Mead Center (where our car was). Road walk was only a couple miles and was interesting (cemetery, cellar holes, etc). That white car wasn't yours, was it? 2. So true about many of the 52 having better views than the 48. 3. Could be wrong, but I think that ridge in the distance was Mt. Israel and an unnamed peak. Great (and helpful!) video!

Yes the White Subaru Crosstrek in the background was mine! At the overlook where we had food And I was pointing at some of those Mountains being Morgan and Percival but I wasn’t sure I did go back and look at the map and they were in that area I was pointing but don’t know exactly for sure! Jennings was the only one I walked away with 100% certainty! Adirondacks are my familiar Mountains so I’m still learning the whites! They are constantly confusing me lol!

Honestly it was completely fine. Maybe they fix the road or maybe my Subaru is just that good but it was flawless hahaha. Add a little bit of weather into the mix and I could see that road being a little crazy
