You look at something like the Original Yeast Sandwich, and all that comes to mind is... times were HARD in 1936, Jack. Visually though, I give the crown (the... um... anti-crown? what's the opposite of the crown?!) to the cottage cheese anchovy disaster. I'm sure it tasted bad, but good gawd almighty that looks unpalatable. Happy new year and thanks for the laughs!

I think a good metric would be how many times you chew before immediately yeeting it into the bin. I noticed a pattern as we went a long in the video fewer and fewer chews each time before deciding it was terrible. I think the worst sandwich only took two chews to determine inedibility.

As a South African I grew up on this stuff called Peck's Anchovette, which is an anchovy paste of sorts, though i think it technically has some other fish types in there as well. Its super mild though, and made for spreading on bread. Honestly pretty delicious. I do wonder if the hate for anchovy paste could be tied to whatever specific brand of anchovy paste you are using, and further wonder if back in the day they may have used something more like Peck's than the modern super salty stuff... food for thought. I think you should do an anchovy paste showdown with a bunch of different brands 😂
@vjc22702 ай бұрын
Peck's Anchovette is a classic and yes, I can vouch for its tastiness! Like you, I doubt that it's anywhere near 100% pure anchovy. It's one of those foods that definitely would not have benefited from the modern requirement to list all ingredients on the label, but as a kid in Australia, I loved it! Pecks also made a 'devilled ham spread' that was mighty toothsome - same caveat re labelling applies...😆

something people underestimate about the 1890s to the 1900s is how much substances the average person was using on a semi-regular basis. some people were just stoned *all the time* back then, so i'm not surprised at these early 20th century recipes.

I was in elementary school, my best friend (from a potato farm family) and I took cold lunch to school after the big holidays. She had several days where she would bring a sandwich with her that she called a stuffing sandwich. It was made with two pieces of bread-filled with, yep-stuffing was leftover stuffing 😂. I laughed about it then and I’m still laughing 😂
@jadsel Жыл бұрын
One of my grandfathers would make those for himself after any holiday dinner. No condiments or anything; just dressing slapped between white sandwich bread. He also grew up during the Depression, which I figured might have something to do with it once I got older. Interesting to hear that he wasn't the only one to do that!

I am wondering if anchovy products used in some of these weren't all salted up. There are some brands that aren't cured in salt, but in more oil. Also the extract could be the italian Colatura di Alici which probably has a way different flavor profile and consistency than the anchovy sauce. The yeast sandwich just reminded me of marmite or vegemite, which you would use a lot less on the bread.
