Idk man I'm a massive (sandy) Alex G fan and I kinda agree with melon on some this. This album definitely didn't have the same impact on me as rocket did. Some of the tracks I feel like I would never really desire to listen to again and even the tracks that I loved weren't as good as the best tracks in Rocket. Idk maybe it will come with time.

I think Alex has some uneven albums, but there’s always a few songs I constantly come back to. And personally I get a lot out of his lyrics. They’re usually stories about being a less than great person to people that love you. There’s a melancholy to them. Also he puts on a fantastic live show. Idk man, different strokes.

As an avid Alex G fan I can say that I agree mostly with what AF is saying. Alex has a songwriting tendency to put forth and execute a brilliant idea or concept, but only elaborate upon it to a point to where it feels unsatisfying and under developed. House of Sugar doesn't feel complete, and is more of a contemplation of different ideas. Also I'd say that Rocket is more of a complete work than House of Sugar, and defiantly is more coherent as an album.

Part of that has to do with expectations; Charli blew his expectations out of the water, while House of Sugar disappointed him (especially after liking the lead up single tracks), and that’s a big part of how he rates stuff (or so he’s said in the past). I think that’s also why people are so let down by this review, bc expectations, and the fact that it appears he flip flopped or something like that, bc once again he likes tracks in isolation, but not so much in the context of the album. There’s actually nothing wild or surprising about that at all imo, but some ppl are developing theories of “he’s echoing the help/these aren’t his opinions/ten out of ten, review it again”, etc...Idk, I get the AG fans being super bummed, but anyone who’s watched Melon consistently over the years has had “what the actual fuck are you on/you’re objectively subjectively wrong/you’re a big stupid dumb dumb with dumb opinions”, etc, moments, and/or been let down, saddened, or even infuriated by Melon... I wouldn’t give Charli a 9, but I’d give it an light 8, which is based off one full listen. I wouldn’t give House of Sugar a 5, but I’d give it a very strong 7, and that’s based off one full listen. If I listen to then again, and I probably will, I absolutely expect my opinions to change, bc one listen isn’t enough, but I think a lot of fans probably already have this new Alex G album near memorized by now, while Melon probably has listened to the album about 5 or 6 times (he went into the process before, but I forget the full # of listens he does), and that’s a big difference... Hell, there are albums that I love where the 1st listen I thought it’s a masterpiece, but the next few listens I was more underwhelmed, and only with a lot of time and teasing out the intricacies and complexities of the music did I come to fully appreciate and love it.. Plus, the context surrounding listening to an album is full can be made or break, and is nothing like consuming an individual track outside the context, and bla bla bladdy bla, my point is that the degree to which listening to an album and forming an opinion is subjective is far more so, and far more complicated than I think most people give credit to, and I get it, bc I get pissed sometimes when my experience is so different, and the expectations are so dashed, just like I get off so fucking hard when they’re validated, *especially by bald, early 30s, millennial boomer, miscegenationist, egg melon heads.* Nothing else gets me that hard.

So, I'm a huge Alex G fan but I think Anthony has some decent points here. This is definitely not my favorite Alex album, but for different reasons than Anthony points out here. I think his point about the lack of cohesiveness of the album is warranted, but I think Alex's concept of what an album is different than what Anthony's is. Alex's albums are like a series of short vignettes and Anthony wants to read a novel. Regarding the singing: Alex isn't a good singer, but that's not the point. They're his songs, his sound makes them perfect even if he isn't a classically considered "good singer". Hell, Stephen Malkmus, Doug Martsch, and Jay Mascus are all pretty bad singers but their music would sound wrong without them singing. Being a "good singer" just isn't the point. Oh and... Alex G > Car Seat Headrest every time. CSHR is pretty much pop/rock these days while Alex has remained an Indie/Noise rock pioneer, and that's just much more my thing.

Interesting. Rocket wasn't all that inviting to me, and this was really odd when I first listened in my car - then I listened on headphones and it all made sense. It is a bizarre album in the sense that it sounds messy and full of disparate feelings cobbled together, but when you truly listen, it all makes sense. Overall, thoroughly enjoyed it. Think it might make me go back to Rocket.

Can someone tell me why they like this record so much tho? I like the start and end of it ALOT but those 4 “experimental”’ songs in the middle are really...not my taste. I really enjoy experimental music and enjoy being challenged and music doesnt have to always leave a melody in my head, but it atleast needs to leave me with a new perspective. The middle part of this album just sounds like an impersonation of what experimental music should sound like. I must agree with Anthony that they do sound like rough ideas and directions for songs instead of fully developed ones. Its frustrating because every-time I get to Near I just sigh. Would have loved a detour into a more wacked out realm but only if it was executed with intention and not so loose. Its just my opinion, I understand this album is getting a lot if love AND confusion and I would really like to hear a good opinion on why someone loves it.
