Sandymouth Devon - Epic lighting then this happened...

In this video entitled, "Sandymouth Devon, Epic lighting then this happened", I scouted out great locations during an incredible sunset. But...
A couple of weeks ago, I toured around Devon in search of great woodland and landscapes to photograph. Having just spent 2 days photographing Wistman's Wood with my great friend Mike Browne, I was advised to photograph Sandymouth by local vlogger / photographer Ian Robertson.
I wasn't disappointed, the place is incredible! Furthermore, the sunset was wonderful too. Surely, all the stars would align for a change, wouldn't they?
Sadly, the light did change but not for the better. I was struck (as always) with the vloggers curse! The Vloggers Curse is when low-lying cloud develops on the horizon preventing the suns rays from creating a great sunrise/sunset. I'm sure this happens to everyone but recently I appear to be having my own fair share!

Agreed, and what an experience it was! Climbing over rocks, having to watch out for the sea, racing the light. A place you could go back to over and over and over, and keep getting different images based on light and tide etc.

@@danielmekis4398 I can empathize with that more than I would like. I teared a ligament at Blackchurch Rock three weeks ago and fell into the Atlantik. Can't recommend that. That ended my vacation early. I'm glad I made it back to the car park with a lot of effort and pain. But at least I got some nice pictures. ;)

Hi Gary. Been there myself a few times, and it may well have been with the "local photographer". It is a fabulous location, especially whether the weather and tide are just right. Don't beat yourself up, as I thought the images still had some great atmosphere and the remains of the lovely light.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Video Gary - its your enthusiasm - to have a go at turning any negative into a positive - that's worth everything in my book. The number of times I have gone to a place full of enthusiasm only to find that weather wise things just didn't turn out as expected. To keep ones enthusiasm and remain motivated on such occasions is not always easy. I liked the photos too - what would these photos have been like had the lighting been to plan. The photos would have been brilliant as usual. Thanks for sharing this with us all Gary.

A good trip is doing and seeing what you enjoy. It's the experience that counts. Photography is like fishing, you don't catch something every time. Gary, I loved this. It highlights the graft that goes into the work you and many of your colleagues do. You are living my dream. The pleasure of getting out there. Shutting the chaos out for a few hours is what it is truly about. Then add the reward of a beautiful photograph is the icing on the cake. Then sometimes we even get a cherry on top. Love your vlogs and look forward to them every week. I find them very relaxing and inspiring. 👍🏻 always from me 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

It’s a fantastic beach and you were given excellent advice to go there and what to expect at high tide and a larger sea swell. It was very interesting how you approached your photography in an unfamiliar location in such a short time. You searched fast for potential compositions and was very positive about future visits. I was surprised you didn’t want to put your tripod legs into the sand? It would give you so many more shooting opportunities. I found it’s quite a dangerous beach when the waves are big because the rogue waves are bigger too so you could find yourself up to your thighs especially if you’re prepared to wait for your long exposure to finish. I would definitely recommend an outgoing tide photographing a the sunsets an hour or two after high tide especially if you’re after water movement. The sloping pebbles roar at high tide with the backwash of the wave which is quite daunting. I first went there for the amazing shaped pools in the sand at mid to low tide then soon learnt it’s potential when the tide was in too. You did so well capturing the 3 images. My next visit will be this winter and I’m going to wear chest waders. It takes so long for the inside of wellies to dry. I’ll look forward to your next visit and future vlogs Gary. I was inspired by your boat wrecks video. 👍🏼😎

photographers paradise. I have loved your videos for years, they refresh me. Thank you for that. Just like the videos with Mike Browne, who I also really like. You two are about photography, not technology. We all have cameras that can do anything. What we, or I, don't have are these great motivs. You live in a very photogenic country. I live in a hollow of nothing. In the middle of Germany, where there are hardly any motivs. Of course I find motivs in old industrial plants or on a meadow with a fence. But that is not to be compared. Please go ahead and make my day better.

It's all about expectations. The one thing we don't control is the weather and it's all too easy for viewers to get the idea that "sun always shines on TV" as the song goes. Thanks for the candid edition today, we all have times when that expectation doesn't match up with reality! As for disappointing images, hardly what you'd call bad shots Gary, you do yourself a disservice, just not what you had in mind. That's the hard bit, but also what makes those really magic occasions all the more appreciated.

Hi Gary, you should definitely be commended for showing shoots that haven’t worked. I appreciate the honest video. In terms of honesty, there's another photography I follow who includes the as-shot raw capture along with his finished edit, which is both instructive, and as I say, honest. I agree that the sun disappearing behind the thick clouds on the horizon handicapped your ability to get the sort of images you wanted, but lets face it, you had two other challenges you faced--first, it was a new area for you and you wouldn't have needed time so scope out the composition(s) that you wanted, and second, it appears as if you got there too late to give yourself adequate time to explore. In other words, your shoot resembled what many of us non-full-time-landscape-photographers do on a regular basis. But you made the most of it, and did come away with a couple of nice photos. Can't get bangers every time you go out!!

It is great to see you in my area of the country. Devon and Cornwall has some spectacular photo opportunities but an awful lot of photographers overlook this part of the country as , as you said in your video, it takes a long time to get anywhere as the roads, in lots of instances, are just country lanes, and it is a very long way from the Lake District or Scotland, where most people head. The rogue waves are called "sneakers" and the Cornish beaches are renowned for them. I have very often come away from a beach with wellies full of sea water and extremely wet trousers!! Considering you were rushing around, I think the images didn't turn out too badly .

It's wat happens to us photographers and awful lot of the time when we go out with a plan that doesn't quite come off and it's nice to see some honest shots instead of every one being near perfect. By the way I quite liked the first of the three you put up. OK there was little sunset colour but it was quite a dramatic shot.

I actually really liked the photos. Especially 3. I was wondering what it would look like if you blended the horizon a bit or just softened it. I feel like if the sunset did play ball, it would be just a bit over the top. These have a nice real feeling to them, just pulled back ever so slightly. Like when you slide the clarity slider to 40, and then back to 12. 🙂

Sometimes a trip can turn out pretty good after the initial disappointment of arriving at the destination and not having the desired conditions because it brings out plan b. There usually isn't a plan b so I have to look for one which can be enjoyable and make you look for shots you wouldn't have found previously. There's also the added bonus of knowing the challenge you've set yourself still exist for another day.
