For a beginner, I’ll be honest, I’d recommend going with something bigger. I really struggled scaling my audio interface to record live performances and play live with my computer. If you get a device with 2 stereo outputs (I went with the Scarlett 2i4), you can have seperate outputs going to your ears, which means the world! I really regret going with my original audio interface, because I only used it for about 6 months before scaling up. I couldn’t be happier with my scarlett too! The latency is super low and it’s super useful. It’s worth thinking that if you ever think you’ll want to play live, you’re gonna need 2 stereo outputs.

I've got a Behringer up from this one, the UMC404, which has four combo mic/line inputs, each with an insert in the back. It's decent, and I actually used it for live sound at a few shows, so it's versatile. But there are annoying things about it. The inputs seem to clip at a ridiculously low level, and its main outs also feel weak (weaker than the playback outputs). The knobs feel OK but they're not intuitively placed. I bought a Behringer UMC-404HD for recording and streaming audio at our church and have been very happy with it. What I'm looking for now is just stereo outs from a laptop - I'm adding some MIDI-triggered VSTs to my guitar rig, and just need a decent DAC. I was looking hard at the Behringer 202HD until a Focusrite 2i2 popped up on Facebook Marketplace for dirt cheap. If your finances are constrained, used gear is always a good choice. You and often pick up stuff that's still eminently usable for way under the cost of comparable new gear.

Most the 2 channel audio interfaces seem to be too much of a compromise, so yes I highly recommend spending a little bit more to get the next level (or two) up. I researched a while and kept coming back to the Behringer UMC404HD because it was cheap and feature-ful. For $135 street price, you get 192KHz, 24 bit, 4 mic/instrument/line inputs with better gain (and pad button to cut gain for hot inputs) than the cheaper Behringer models, proper headphone in/mix monitoring, send channels (for external processors), midi in/out, 4 outputs (2 main, 2 alternate - using XLR, TRS, and/or RCA). It works on PC/Mac/iOS. It will run off USB power, but with iOS, you'll want to use the AC adapter (included). It has all the pro features of bigger units, for not much more $$. A good choice for me at least.
@junpreet92612 жыл бұрын
404hd or 204hd??
@mglohmeyer2 жыл бұрын
@@junpreet9261 If you know for sure all you need is 2 channels, the UMC202HD is great - same quality as the UMC404HD. But if you are new to doing home recording and think you'll only need 2 channels, more likely you will quickly find the UMC202HD is limiting, but 4 channels on the UMC404HD isn't so much. I would only buy a 202 because I need a small cheap 2 channel device. Otherwise I would suggest the 404 any day over the 202. The UMC202HD is about 1/2 the price of the 404 now (about $90 for the 202 vs. $170 for the 404). But as they say, buy what you can afford. The only down side about the 404 vs. the 202 is 2x the size and 2x the price. Regarding 2 vs. 4 channels. Why does this matter? If you want to record 2 mono instruments (guitar and a microphone, or 2 microphones for a pod cast), 2 channels is fine. If you want to record 2 stereo instruments (a pair of synths) or more than 2 mono instruments, you will need the 404. I recently upgraded to a UMC1820 which is effectively like the UMC404HD but with 8 channels. No HD, though which means no 192KHz. Very few people need 96KHz or 192KHz - if you don't know why you care, then you don't need it - 44.1Hz or 48Hz is perfectly fine. My other upgrade was to buy a Presonus StudioLive 32R (rack mount 32 channel in/out mixer which also works as a 32 channel audio interface). I use the UMC1820 for my iPad, and the StudioLive 32R for my Mac. All my synths (up to 16 stereo synths) can connect to the 32R at once, no swapping cables or even using a patch bay. Yes, expensive and perhaps overkill, but I mention this as an example that if you buy lots of stuff that you want connected all the time, you can never have enough ports. BTW, the UMC1820 is about $280 right now. It has basically 8 ins/outs but expandable to 16 ins/outs using ADAT connected to something like a Behringer ADA8200 ($220). The UMC202HD and UMC404HD do not have ADAT expandability, but the UMC1820 does, which helps future proof it a little bit. So, I go back to my original comment that for the price, the UMC404HD with 4 in/outs might be just enough to make the difference but still cheap enough to not break the bank. Figure out your budget and buy the most ports you can afford, unless, again, you know for sure you only need 2 ins/outs.

thank you so much for this. I'd buy the M-Audio if i didn't read this. for the cheapest price, durability, and quality, I think the scarlett solo is the safest choice to pick.

You may benefit from an audio interface plus microphone and then just the camera connector (USB to lightning) for your iPad. Or you can get an audio interface that is built for iOS like the IK Multimedia iRig products. Lots to choose from.

I recently asked about Audient id14 and id22 vs my Eleven Rack and I got a reply about Focusrite Clarett and trying to get me to buy one. I've had a Focusrite and I would never touch them again. And imo a poor company to bring out the 6i6 gen1 then find they can't fix it any issues so gen 2 came out. I will never forgive them for that bs.

I'm pretty sure the M-Audio was quiet with your Beyerdynamics because you're supposed to use at least a headphone amp with them to give them the juice they really need at that impedance.

Excellent video, especially the vocal and guitar comparisons at the end. The differences really stand out. I've always used Steinbergs and it's nice to see they stack up well in comparison to the others. M-Audio was also a bit of a shock in a good way, very clear sounding- would probably place that as a close second to the UR 12. While I liked liked the sound of the NI Komplete (you described the colouring of the sound very well), I found it to have a lack of note separation when listening to the chords. Am I just hearing things or does anyone else agree?

I don't understand why you didn't test the UMCxxxHD models from Behringer instead of the cheapest model you could fine. The HD models should all be below $100, have different chips and offer a lot of extras.
@SanjayC5 жыл бұрын
That is an excellent question. I had to make a choice when choosing which Behringer interface to buy. These seven interfaces are the entry-level interfaces from each of the companies. Behringer positioned the UMC22 to compete with the Focusrite Scarlett Solo and others at that entry point. It's to Behringer's benefit that they can sell their entry-level interface at a much lower price than the competition. Behringer positions itself to "sell comparable products at lower prices" rather than to "deliver more features/quality at the same price point as the competition." You'll see that they make that strategy choice with all their products. So the UMC22 is Behringer's answer to the Scarlett Solo. But thanks for the really good question!

And MIDAS preamps. It would have been the most compareable, reasonable, and best, choice.
@stephaneenglish46615 жыл бұрын
Sanjay C I don’t think that was the best decision. I want to know what’s the best purchase for equivalent budget. Behringer have addressed comments on their sound quality by incorporating Midas pre-amps in their newer models, still within $100. When selecting my interface, I really need to know what I can get and what my trade-offs are for the same budget, not how to shave off a few $. I really hope you consider doing an update, comparing the UMCxxxHD features and sound quality against similar price interfaces from Focusrite and the other manufacturers.

@@stephaneenglish4661 hi, you can look into these type of comparison here kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoa7eqaFnJaCn5I and the rest of the channel kzbin.infovideos is more focused on scientific mesurement of the audios INs and OUT of the audio interface on the market to compare and make your choice As the argument started, the Behringer 404HD goes for around 100-115€ in Europe so the same as Focusrite solo 3rd gen but the I/O is of the range above (4 in with preamp, 4 in insert, 4 out, and MIDI in+out) so on the base spec the Behringer totaly blow the competition. I would have like it in the video but it would have started a messier comparison where bang for the buck it wins but Sanjay may not wanted to crown it the winner.
