I like how the backstories in One Piece have more meat to them beyond making you sad, even when it's sad they end up carrying positive lessons from them. -In Luffy's backstory we are shown the importance of role models and how you don't have to put your life on the line for every little thing that happens to you, but that it's on the moment they harm people you hold dear, he also learns his reckless actions have consequences (Shanks' arm), yet it's those experiences that make him grow into who he is today. -In Zoro's we learn it's important to be careful while going up or down the stairs. (His friendship with Kuina and their vow to be the greatest swordsmen along with her premature death are what gives him strength and the will to accomplish both of their dreams and to never get himself killed until that happens.) -In Usopp's, lies are depicted as a way to have harmless fun and cheer up other people (also his way to cope over his dad not being there when his mom died) in contrast to Kuro who lies only for his own sake, Usopp as much as he lies still carries a heart of gold and is willing to die and even turn his lies into truth for the sake of others. -In Sanji's we see yet again the importance of role models and how they shape you as a person, tho unlike Luffy, Sanji's love for his parental figure made him stop following his dream due to guilt over Zeff's leg, which is why it's so important that he meets Luffy and Zoro, two people who have it imprinted on their heads to follow their dreams regardless of how dangerous the path may be, if they die trying to achieve their dream then they are okay with that. All of their backstories have a heavy focus on found family and obtaining the courage to follow your dreams and laugh in spite of tragedy and that's a wonderful message to have imo. edit: might be worth mentioning the manga starts with luffy's backstory while the anime moved it to a later point, all the core themes and lessons we see throughout the series were already shown to us nicely the moment the story started.

I love how Oda uses these big confrontations with other pirates to draw an outline around the way Luffy sees the world. His idea of treasure was contrasted against buggy. His idea of loyalty was contrasted against Kuro. His idea of power was contrasted against don Krieg and with Arlong is all of this together

This is it. East Blue is a showcase of Luffy's brand of Piracy. What he deems as treasure, as power, as friends. Grandline Paradise is then a test of his worth as a pirate and as a captain. As a long running series, it's really well made

Not really. The live action continued with the eat his leg, but they didn't showed him cutting his leg. So they also thought it was really gruesome. In the anime, they didn't wanted to show the actual part, so they found another way of him cutting it, but less gruesome. In the end, both anime and live action decided to not go the manga part, they only decided different ways to do it.

Aside from the anime censoring how Zeff lost his leg (he did eat it in the manga like in the LA), the anime also cut a small detail in the flashback, which is Zeff hitting a man from his own crew who stole food from the ship they attacked.

Just so you know, the correct version for Zeff's leg is the live action's one. In the manga, Zeff did eat his leg, it's just that we have a page were Zeff cut his leg with a rock and the anime found it to graphic for kids so they changed the whole thing, I prefer the choice of the live action to keep the idea and just offscreened it

Just wanted to say we do get to see these "side characters" again from time to time. Whenever some world changing event happens in the story they usually show reactions to it from characters we have met along the way, like in the live action when we got to see Kaya and some others reacting to Luffy's bounty poster, so we do see some of them again. Some get shown more frequently than others depending on their relevance, but we do get to see Usopp's crew again when they are older working hard on acheiving their own dreams. :)

One of the stupidest moments in LA. I still don't understand why they voiced it there. In the case of Zoro, they reduced the time frame so that it would be less fantastic, and then they just repeated it, while making terrible makeup, without even trying to convey what someone who had been sitting almost without food for months would look like…

But more importantly, if they couldn’t do something like that, then maybe they shouldn’t talk about exactly how much time they spent there, like they did in the anime? Moreover, this was done against the backdrop of a change in the history of Zoro, who, instead of a month, was supposed to last only a week with Morgan.

As some people already said : In the manga, zeff ate his leg. But I've something to say about this that I like to share : 1) I don't like when show goes to far into the "ugly"... like rape, cannibalism, slavery. ---> --> A show like One Piece has a light tone to it's whole being... and I don't like when it go too far. So I prefer this Anime adaptation, when Zeff sacrifice his leg for Sanji, but not by cannibalism. 2) For Buggy --> As someone say here in the comment, it's Oda's favorite character. And he made it Goofy, and somewhat light-hearted in the Manga/Anime... the whole scene in the open with blue sky. He does a party for Nami... there is real laugh and good town... + jokes. Okay he blows up some houses, but those are empty houses. --> In the show --> They added a more dark tone like Slavery... forced laugh by the "slaves"... dark scenes with not many light (Dark circus). --> I think it doesn't go in the direction Oda went for Buggy.... Buggy was ment to be goofy and loves by the public that read the manga. Well done in the anime, with his funny voice :D

I hate when people start denegrate characters not by what they do and how they are shown in the series, but by exterior factors. In this case Pearl and Don Krieg. One thing I noticed is that the people that came from the live action and know that Don Krieg and his crew are set aside, discard all of them as nothing important. People that only watched directly from the anime, have a more critical and analytical impression of those characters. Though, you can also differentiate between the anime watchers that were said that Arlong Park is where the series "get good", will still do a similar thing as the people coming from the live action(even though to a lesser extension). Pearl does a lot of damage, is strong, and is funny. Still they say he is inconsequential. And that conclusion is obviously taken just beause he was cast aside in the live action. -Spoiler warning- The same thing is done to Don Krieg, and is funny that in this arc he is the "De facto" winner. Where if it wasn't his squad throwing down the towel, they would get the Baratie. Yes, Luffy basically fall into the ocean and was dying, while Don Krieg just got unconsious, they could just simply wake him up. Many times Luffy won fights in the same way Don Krieg ended this one.

The anime sort of ruined Zeffs sacrifice.... He originally cut off his own leg as means to keep himself alive while giving Sanji all of the food so he didn't have to do such a thing. The anime made it so that Zeff literally had no other choice but to cut his own leg off otherwise he would have just died right there. Less of an impactful moment seeing as he didn't fully do it for Sanji.

I see it as opposite. In anime zeff jumped into water to save sanji (and got trapped). In manga, as well as in anime he gave all food to sanji. So that part is same. In manga he ate his foot for his own survival, not for sanji. But in anime he lost his leg because he chose to help sanji. So anime sacrifice is far greater. Plus anime zeff is chad for living 80 days without food. Meanwhile manga zeff is noob for eating his own leg to survive. Everyone knows that the trauma of losing a leg costs the body more than what you can get from the nutrients of eating that leg.

Please speed it up. I watched one piece 6 hours a day and took me over 4 months i think to catch up. If not you guys will just quit this legendary anime because of too many episodes
