I actually just looked back and read that part again because I remembered seeing someone say that and I wanted to check for myself. It was definitely the face, but the mask is also definitely a foreshadowing of Sanji's backstory, with them both specifically being "an iron mask." That's just not what Sanji was shocked by or else he'd be shocked by every helmet he sees.

Talking about being from North Blue but not wanting to go into more detail about it, and calling himself Mr. Prince, are parts of the hints at his royal background. Oda knew who this character was really gonna be pretty early on. Of course, with any detail in One Piece you can say "that foreshadows this thing!" or you can say "it's just a coincidence" or "he only had general ideas and not the whole story planned out," we don't technically know which one is true unless he says it.

Well, from this point on I just had to put Sanji as my favourite strawhat. I just couldn't help myself from doing that, since I found Sanji to be an incredibly interesting character... I got to a point where I saw myself on Sanji on some of his experiences. I'll never gonna be tired of saying it, but I truly feel like Sanji is the most human character, this guy just feels natural for some reason... His moral codes and what does he stand for; his life as a kid; his big heart; his insecurities and determination; and finally his respect for food and life itself. I can't help but relate to him, he's complex and complicated just like how a real person is. His devotion towards women is absolutely justified for me after this second background of his, the first kindhearted people that he met and saved him was his mother and sister... It just completes his characterization to the fullest. His first flashback with Zeff wasn't traumatizing enough for Oda from what it looks like... Thank you for your reaction Allona! You made me tear up just by the thumbnail....

Great reaction! Yes as much as I hate Ichiji, Niji and Yonji, I pity them too. It's not their fault, they've literally been built this way. Generally adults are morally responsible because with growth and experience they've acquired the ability to choose no matter where they came from. But there are exception and Sanji's brothers are one: They had no choice at any point, they were just made differently from humans from the beginning and of course the upbringing didn't help (but the upbringing alone would not have justified their attitude as adult). Reiju really is a good person she helped Luffy out too without hesitation when she didnt have to. She risked much by helping Sanji she knew of the modifications and how they removed all emotions from the others if she would have taken sanjis side openly they would have turned against her without blinking. I also love how Oda makes the backstorys for the characters and how they change how we see them like many bad guys have really tragic backstorys that made them the way they are i mean you can say sanji's brothers are evil but they are modified, emotionless and trained for violence they never had much of a choice

Whole cake island is a great ARC. Sanji leaves the crew for his biological family that tortured him as a child only because he was a human, only for them to use him to gain power as an adult. He fight his captain and best friend, the girl he is supposed to get married to gives him a false hope that she loves him only for him to hear her mocking him and discussing how they will kill him and his family the next morning. Imagine that for a second he never got to choose any of it, he is a normal human while his brothers are super humans which he didn't choose it just happened, he never choose the girl he is supposed to marry, he never choose to starve to death with a pirate a rock in the middle of the ocean. He doesn't deserve any of this and at the end he breaks, why is this happening to me, what did I do to deserve this? Finally, luffy the only choice he actually made awaits him to eat his food no matter how muddy or smelly or terrible it is and enjoy it just like his mom once did. You can't make this shit up this such dramatic storytelling on another level in a goofy pirate comic where even characters' height, shapes, and laughter are over the top and ridiculous. Oda Sensei is a genius storyteller and that is an understatement.

Oda introduced Sanji and Zeff backstory in the beginning of the series and somehow found a way to turn it even more emotional in Whole Cake ISland. Sanji asking why Zeff sacrificed for him gains a whole new dimension after you learn his own family treated him like garbage

Sanji's brothers were successfully modified to not have any emotions. Reiju is the only one that does have emotions 'cause of their mom.

I don't remember if they state it directly or if Oda just said it in one of the SBS thingies (edit: it was in one of the recent "Vivre Card" databooks), but the reason Reiju isn't as hateful and emotionless as the brothers is because, since she was born a few years before them, her mom wasn't sick at the time and was able to talk to her often and taught her how to be human behind Judge's back. Once she was bedridden there was no hope for the other children, but Sanji was a special case, as you can see in these flashbacks - he was the only one to go and visit her often, just like Reiju. (Also remember how Duval had an iron mask when he first showed up, around 350 chapters before this moment?) Oh, and Cosette looks worse in the manga after Niji beats her up, but they completely toned it down for the anime. In the manga she's bleeding and swollen all over her face, which is why Niji says something like "If I knew you were in love with her I wouldn't have messed up her face."

Wow those were rough to watch. Especially about Sanji's backstory. I can relate to how Sanji felt after losing his mom and I love to cook too got me right in the feels too. That's what hit me the most. 😩😟. But I'm glad to see that Raiju had a good heart in helping Sanji while he was locked up by his own father smh. And it's messed up that his dad is holding Zeff hostage just to Keep Sanji in line. And I totally agree with you about Cracker he does have a great character design. But hopefully Luffy had enough time to recover his Haki. But these episodes were good but hard to watch without getting emotional. Anyway another awesome reaction from you gorgeous and hope you're having a great Friday too.
