Plot:
Sankarabharanam (English: The Jewel of Shankara) is a 1980 Telugu, musical drama film, directed by K. Viswanath and produced by Poornodaya Movie Creations. The soundtrack was composed by K. V. Mahadevan, and remained a chartbuster. The film is listed among CNN-IBN's list of hundred greatest Indian films of all time.The blockbuster film has received four National Film Awards including the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, and five state Nandi Awards. The film was premiered at the 8th International Film Festival of India, the Tashkent Film Festival and the Moscow International Film Festival held in May 1980.The film has also won the Prize of the Public at the Besancon Film Festival of France in the year 1981.
The film starts with an introduction by Viswanath, "Shishurvetti pashurvetti, vetti gaana rasam phanihi (Music is enjoyed equally well by babies, animals and even snakes). Sastri is a very popular Carnatic singer. He is immersed in sangeeta rasaamruta (Nectar of Music) with his nirantara saadhana (uninterrupted practice). People come in huge numbers to listen to his voice and consider him a great man. He has mastered the raga Sankarabharanam and hence is eponymous with the same. Tulasi, (Manju Bhargavi) is a prostitute's daughter who has great interest in music and dance. She is also an admirer of Sastri and learns music from him when he used to teach his own daughter along the riverside. But her mother wants her to become a prostitute to earn money.One day a rich client
of her mother's rapes Tulasi. He insults Sastri saying that now that he is done with Tulasi, she could go and flirt with Sastri all she wanted. Enraged by the disgrace towards Sastri, her guru, she kills the client. Sastri tries to save her by consulting his lawyer brother (Allu Ramalingaiah), who wins the case in Tulasi's favour and her mother is sent to jail. Then Sastri brings her to his home where other people insult him, as Tulasi is a murderer
and daughter of a prostitute, while Sastri is a devout Brahmin. Tulasi moves out of his house as she does not want him to be insulted because of her but hopes to show her gratitude towards him.Ten years have passed, pop music is now popular in India and Sastri loses his classical music audience. He now lives in a small house with his grown up daughter. When Tulasi comes to know of Sastri's plight she tries to help him financially but gives
the money through someone else.

I dont understand much of Telugu but I instantly could connect myself with the divinity of this movie, its music and lyrics. And this song is pure divinity. Many people would not even attempt to watch this movie under the misconception that it is boring and outdated. Even I have been one of those till I have watched it today. Believe me, I now deeply regret my decision not to have watched this earlier when I had the opportunity to do so. This movie is truly a masterpiece; it is one of the kind awe-inspiring movie. Any degree of appreciation would be less to praise the director of this exemplary work of art. This movie deserves to be watched by everyone, especially 'GenY' because it explains the greatness and beauty of Telugu Classical music, and dispels all the negative notions we have about it. ఈ సినిమా హిట్ స్థాయి గురించి తలచుకుంటే ఇప్పటికీ ఆశ్చర్యం కలుగుతుంది. ఈ సినిమా చూడడాన్ని ఒక గౌరవంగా భావించేవారు జనం. అప్పట్లో థియేటర్లలో ఎక్స్ ట్రా సీట్లు వేసేవారు. ఏదోలా థియేటర్లో కొంచెం చోటు దొరికితే చాలు.. ధన్యులమైపోయాం అనుకునేవారు జనం. ఇది నేను ఇప్పటికీ మరిచిపోలేను. మేం ఈ సినిమా ఎక్స్ ట్రా సీట్లలోనే కూర్చుని చూశాం. మొదటి వారం రోజులూ థియేటర్లు ఖాళీ. చూసినవాళ్లంతా బావుందన్నారు గానీ.. థియేటర్లకి వచ్చేవాళ్లు తక్కువ. ఇక ఎత్తేద్దాం అనుకునే టైమ్ వచ్చేసరికి రోజు రోజూ ఆదరణ పెరిగిపోయింది. శంకరాభరణం టికెట్ దొరికితే చాలు... అనుకునేవారు. చిన్నప్పటి నుంచీ పాటలు పాడడం నా హాబీ. ఎక్కడికి వెళ్లినా నన్ను ఏదో పాడమని అడిగేవారు. శంకరాభరణం వచ్చిన తరవాత ఎక్కడికి వెళ్లినా ముందు శంకరాభరణం పాటలే పాడమని అడిగేవారు. ఒక ఏడాది కాదు, రెండేళ్లు కాదు. శంకరాభరణం రిలీజైన పది సంవత్సరాల వరకూ ... ఇదే జరిగింది. ఇది నా అనుభవం. నిజంగా నిజం! తెలుగువాళ్లు తమిళవాళ్లతో పోలిస్తే సంగీతం పట్ల ఎంతో నిర్లక్ష్యంగా ఉంటారు. సంగీత నేపథ్యం ఉన్న సినిమాల్ని సీరియస్ గా తీసుకోరు. కానీ తమిళులు అలా కాదు. వాళ్లు సంగీత సరస్వతి ముద్దుబిడ్డలు. శంకరాభరణం మాత్రం తమిళవాళ్లు ఎంత గొప్పగా ఆదరించారో ... సీరియస్ సంగీత మనస్తత్వం లేని తెలుగువాళ్లు కూడా అంతకుమించి ఆదరించారు. వేళాకోళంగా కామెడీగా చెప్పినా చంద్రమోహన్ చెప్పిన ఈ మాటలు వింటే - అప్పటి సీన్ మీకు అర్థమవుతుంది. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4vUkGCCgZZghLc

I have watched this movie, while exploring the niche South films from all languages in the flow that has been triggered by the Bahubali mania. Though I hate to say stuff like this, still - aisi movies ki baare mein baat karne ki sabki aukat nahi banti hai, meri bhi nahi. I've submitted myself completely to the sacred class and vibrant intensity of polished finesse and classic divinity of the highest order, of every element in this movie. A masterpiece that has stimulated every cell of my body as I watched along. All I have is reverence in silence for such kind of movie material, of the highest class! To the actors and actresses and the crew of this film, and mainly the director Vishwanath sa'ab and music composer KV mahadevan ji- You are blessed, aap sab ko mera deil sey pranaam!! I thank god from the bottom of my heart, for letting me notice this bundle of blessings, and a vintage 2:30 hours! And feel extremely proud of our culture, and of being an Indian watching films such as this. Long live such blessed souls and such content! Aise film kabhi bana nahin, aasha hai kabhi dobaara aisa kuch baney aaj ke waqt mein!

Don't compare this one to recent telugu films its an insult to this movie and stop using the word south indin films, south indians its an insult for us, we are Indians, our mother tounge is telugu, and our states are andhra and telangana and bahubali and shankrabaranam are telugu movies not south indian movies and every industry has its own legacy so don't insult other industries to prove the greatness of telugu industry

@@dheerajnagraj8683 hey Dheeraj, sorry if in case I am casting out an unwanted impression which I need to clear : I am hardly comparing any movie to this, instead, the point is that Bahubali has been a starting point to engage in films on a more regular basis! And, to me, South indian films are as much Indian films as the ones up made in Mumbai are.!! The intent is not to differentiate, rather to only bring out a natural tendency of us folks to be confined to only hindi contemt compared to that in other parts of india. It's only my way of mentioning the point there is, that I have started to follow more films made in South from that point. This one film led me to cultivate a habit to explore content that comes from all of South, not just telugu or kannada or malyalam! It's something I feel glad about, and again just getting into other content from Bahubali doesn't make Bahubali better. And, for my bad, I should have referred to them as Telugu movies, indeed, but to me Bahubali is so big a film, and Shankarabharanam is so classic a piece of art that both of these stand as an identity and pride of not just telugu , but all South and india on the whole. That was my line of thinking in interest of my context. I hope I have cleared your grievance, you have a valid point, however, just wish to clarify the line of thought I am coming from!

I was a kid when I got to watch this movie. I am a Tamilian, still was able to understand this movie by their superb expressions. And the songs... Each one a classic. Many of us knew it by heart and can recite it even now. Not many know that these songs were to be sung by M. Balamuralikrishna, but fate smiled on SP Balasubramaniam and he became so famous thru it!
