I admire your review about Sankyo flute with RT headjoint. This VDO totally explains my feelings & how I work on my own Sankyo RT. Big Thanks ^^

Thank you for making this video! I have been a Sankyo player for over 11 years now and have always used ST and RT headjoints. I recently got a new FT headjoint and found your tip to "not cram the headjoint into your lower lip" to be extremely helpful when playing below low D, as well as above high F. Had I not watched this video I would have returned the headjoint because I thought the FT was too "stuffy" and finicky, but as soon as I made this minor adjustment everything worked perfectly!

Your review of the RT is pretty accurate. This model is named after the original NRS-1 design developed for Alain Marion, so the french articulation as the best for this model makes sense. I watched two masterclasses in a Rio flute festival in the 90`s and his sound was biggest of all. In the classes he stressed exercises to open the throat and mouth, so your instruction about "wind ball" is spot on. In resume, RT is a headjoint for people capable to generate a lot of air, with strong diaphragm (he stressed this too in the classes) and relaxed mouth and throat. He left his personal flute together with the intermediate and student models in the Sankyo stand and we could try it. It was a 24K headjoint and 18K body with silver keys. In the concert hall the sound was beautiful and fat. All the others (including some well known names with gold and platinum Powell, Haynes and Brannen, sounded trebly and with less body, in comparison. His air stream was in crown direction, as Bouriakov and late Rampal (his teacher). This generates a stronger fundamental and fatter tone. RIP master Alain marion.

Your videos are so helpful to me, as I am rediscovering my love for flute after about 25 years away! I played recorder in high school, but as a college music major, they told me I had to pick up a band instrument so chose flute. A cheap flute (barely) got me through college, eventually graduating with my music BA at CSULB in 1985 (wasn't good enough to do a senior recital so I did a mini-thesis instead!). Disillusioned, I went to library school to become a librarian, but kept up with my fluting on and off. In 1988, I purchased a used Sankyo Silver Sonic, which later became the C301 (same as the 201 but with all silver body and head, plated mechanism). When I started playing in a couple of church bands in 1994, I traded it in for the open hole, B foot version of the Silver Sonic (plus got an Altus Alto AF921SE which nearly broke the bank but I adore!) and as my love for flute grew, I ended up purchasing in 1996 a Drelinger Karritium "Modern Wing" headjoint with "gold air reed". I noticed that this Drelinger headjoint has the same raised lip as the RT headjoint, and I'm noticing it does indeed have that same full strong low register that you're describing! I looked through your videos and didn't see any reviews of the Drelinger headjoints, so I'm wondering if maybe in the future you might feature them as well? (Also while I'm asking, maybe you could someday do a review of the Altus Alto line of flutes!). I love your videos -- thanks so much for helping out a guy who hasn't had a flute lesson in 34 years but is learning so much!!

I love your reviews so much! You're so freakin' hilarious and honest. I've been playing on my Jupiter 711 for so many years now but in the next year or so I'm definitely going to upgrade. I'd like to see more full professional model reviews as well as semi-pro models (preferably with full silver bodies - it really let's the color of each headjoint shine - with all the plated bodies, I found myself listening through that sound to single out how the headjoint plays)

I actually just bought my Sankyo 301with RT head joint and I must say... Thank you for this, I finally know how to properly direct my air into the head joint (was facing trouble with the higher register). And yes! I agree with you that the flute sounds crazy on the fortes. But it is a joy to play it.

I like all the comments but It'd be helpful to have a side by side comparison between head joints so you do a scale on one then go to the next to the next etc so you can hear the diffenence without having to find it/search for it. K

Hi Joanna!! I love your reviews, because when it was time to get a new flute I just bought one blindly. Now I own a Pearl 765 Quantz, stirling silver V cut headjoint. I find it more challenging than the C cut however. Should i keep practicingg or find a headjoint that chooses me ;) ?

Hi Joanna and fellow flutists. I just received a Sankyo 201 along with the three head choices to check out for a week on a trial. I am primarily a jazz/rock tenor sax player and a bit of a novice on the flute from a technical perspective. I am having a lot of trouble figuring out which headjoint I like the best :(. I play on one for a while and get used to it and like it - then I play on the next one and get used to it - and like it too. If anyone out there can give some info on these three heads, that make sense to a sax player who doubles on flute, it would be appreciated. Thanks, Rich

Can you do a review on silver piccolos? Are they better than wood piccolos?
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 7 жыл бұрын
I'd say they're different and usually used for different purposes :)

@adaliaarellano2472 7 жыл бұрын
Could you maybe sometime make a video on that?
@dainerflute
@dainerflute 7 жыл бұрын
if I may, I would say that the silver piccolos are often used in marching bands, and they are less sensitive to climate changes etc, and cheaper in value. On the other hand, wood piccolos are used in orchestral and wind ensembles etc. Because of the wood, more expensive and more sensitive, the piccolo in wood can be more flexible in terms of sound, color changes, etc depending on the headjoint. In a long run, professionally speaking, I recommend you to buy a wood picc.
@MichaelNguyen94
@MichaelNguyen94 7 жыл бұрын
Generally wood piccolos have a less strident timbre, but silver piccolos can be real nice even for indoor settings. Haynes used to make great silver piccs and I think Sankyo still makes one.
