Saint Barbara converted to Christianity after witnessing the execution of this young, female, Christian, slave. It is most unlikely that the young slave girl was beheaded, that was a form of execution only available to Roman citizens, never slaves. Far more likely that Barbara witnessed the young slave suffer the utter agony/degradation of a standard Roman crucifixion ( the girl being executed totally naked ) and was moved to convert to Christianity by the young girl's courage and Christian faith in the face of it's horrors.

I don't think most understand that the woman sitting next to the nobleman is his daughter and that she is Saint Barbara. The servent's heroic faith at her execution is what converts Barbara to Christianity. When the servent is asked by the Roman procurator to deny her faith, all she has to do to stop her own execution is to say that she honors the Roman Emperor as a god, but she refuses. After Barbara's conversion, her father could not get her to deny her Christian faith so he had her imprisoned in a tower. After years of imprisonment, she still would not deny her faith so her father had her tortured and finally, he had her condemned to death. Barbara's father was so furious with her that he took a sword and beheaded her himself. Barbara's father, in turn, met his end as he was struck by lightning after beheading his daughter.

What’s at stake here, is obedience to Rome or obedience to a faith in a God that the Romans didn’t understand. Which is faith in Jesus Christ who died on the cross as a remission for a persons sins, to be completely made whole ,clean and forgiven, and earn the right to be in heaven worshipping the God who died for them. Rome wanted 100% adherence to Cesar. To the Christian it meant giving up your life in forfeit sometimes in the most brutal way . But the rewards of martyrdom and adherence to Jesus and what he’s done on the cross, will last eternally. Sorry, but the Judeo-Christians were not Christians who accepted Jesus as Lord, because he doesn't "become" a lord or demi god until the Council of Nicaea in 321. They were JEWS following a somewhat divergent philosophy, and the Romans had plenty of them to deal with, both in the Rome diaspora as well as in Israel/Judea. But none of this is important because we are dealing with an Italian movie. Loved the big guy with the axe at the end.

The New Testament mentions five crowns that can be awarded to His believers when they die- the martyr's crown is one of them. They will be rewarded and honored in heaven forever. There is a crown given in heaven for eagerly desiring Jesus's return to earth, a crown for witnessing to others of His ability to forgive their sins when they accept Jesus as their savior, and a crown for service to Him. Non-citizens and slaves could be executed in a variety of more or less painful and humiliating ways, including crucifixion. That is why Jesus and St. Peter, Roman subjects but not citizens, were crucified; while St. Paul, a Roman citizen, was beheaded just outside the walls of Rome, in a place were the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls now stands.
