I love these vibe cams! Not only does SCV consistently have some of the best writing for the instrument in DCI, but it's harder to appreciate the parts when listening to the overall ensemble, but you can definitely here how much it contributes to their sound when listening to it this way.

Tristan Stevenson they are actuall songs that are just transcripted into brass parts
@marissabowler20985 жыл бұрын
@@RYANRUTH we do have source material and our writers arrange the pieces to fit the instruments as well as create a cohesive show but it is a lot of original writing and scoring! The majority of the opener is original but referncing the melody of "My Body is a Cage" which is also what the ballad is based off of! And Tristan, the Rennicks write the entire percussion book!

Stupid question: who do the vibes play all the runs with mallets 2 and 4 instead of 2 and 3 like the marimbas do?
@jjsoc105 жыл бұрын
They are using Burton/traditional grip! The marimbas use Stevens, so they use 2/3 for singles, but in Burton/traditional you use 2/4 for singles with inner mallets.
@johnwolff5 жыл бұрын
Jhana Parikh thanks! I didn’t even notice what trip they were using. Is there any reason that they are using burton grip instead of Stevens?
@johnwolff5 жыл бұрын
Davin Cai I had no idea, thanks! My school is all Stevens but we use traditional grip for snare so I just didn’t understand why the would use burton over Stevens but now I got it now
@reneegomez72405 жыл бұрын
yeah plus vibe cords sound waaaay louder and more powerful with burton grip

Quick question, whenever playing runs, why do you use mallet 4 instead of mallet 3?

What was the drum pad machine used for?
@sstupid__marimbaplayer4 жыл бұрын
I always wondered what this pad things at the end of the vibes do. Like does it change the fans inside the vibe...or is it set up to like an electronic to make the no instrumental noises?
@colinhough56643 жыл бұрын
It is an electronic instrument. You just can't hear it very well since she sits behind the speakers. But a lot of the yells, whoosh, and anything super electronically goes through those.

What does the thing do at 10:03
@gregk80084 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old comment, but to answer your question: It is a sampler. The mallet players use their mallets to activate sound samples (ie. sound effects) with the mallets.

I like that they use burton grip on the vibes

hey I was wondering if the drum corps season interferes with college at all? I really want to try out when I go to college but I'm looking at schools that are like two hours away from the nearest drum corps and I don't know if I'd be able to travel :(
@AdamS328285 жыл бұрын
Erin Moloney considering that most members are in college, it’s usually not an issue. You’d have to talk to your professors about maybe missing some Fridays for preseason auditions/rehearsals, but most corps will encourage you to put academics first and they’ll excuse you for something like missing Friday night of a weekend rehearsal. Spring training usually starts after most colleges are out for the summer, and I’ve even seen the case where high schoolers miss part of spring training to stay in school for the week of overlap

oof that makes me feel a lot better

Killer! I want to audition for SCV after I get out of high school this year but I'm broke :( I'm saving up for the 2020 season when I am finally in college. Any tips for me in terms of me wanting to play vibe or (if I'm feeling SUPER ambitious) marimba while I'm in hiatus from marching band?
@marissabowler20985 жыл бұрын
Zareef Huq absolutely! I would start with knowing all of your scales inside and out, major and minor. The audition process is a lot of exercises/ brain teasers and reading music. That being said work on sight reading! Lastly, there is an individual portion and you will need a solo. If you can, I would recommend coming to auditions this year so you can get a feel for the process and how we do things. It will also give you plenty to work on before the 2020 audition (which sounds like the year you really want to march). Happy practicing!

I’m going to sound like an idiot, but what does the electronic (I assume) drum pad (I assume again) do in the show?
@marissabowler20985 жыл бұрын
The DTX basically just has different sounds programmed on to it (like the wind sound at the beginning of the show). It is difficult to hear in this video because I kept my monitor pretty quiet, but in the audience you would hear it through the 4 main speakers. Some other obvious patches programmed in other DTXs are the screams, whispers, and all the “drum set” sounds during club sound.

Why aren't you pulsing sometimes
@colton_simmons5 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, vanguard cares more about listening in to each other for time instead of looking in and pulsing. It's a bit different then other corps, but they've won percussion 3 times in a row now so they're clearly doing something right
@blakelandre29235 жыл бұрын
Wow good for them😊 I didnt know that but yeah i can understand that listening is more important epically during the accents because thats when it is hard to pulse
