hi guy. as always, thanks for your efforts and it's safe to say that this review was the key element in convincing me to purchase this bike, in this exact build (except for a factory 36 up front). i've only taken it out on a couple of short rides so far but i am extremely happy with it and all your considerations about how it handles turned out to be 100% spot on. to anyone wondering, i am coming off a v2 bronson and to me it has everything the v2 has plus a truly astonishing amount of: 1) composure and control descending without it overly muting out the trail. the new shock position is a real game changer for this bike; 2) ease in pedaling and climbing. i assume thanks to the new seat tube angle and also the reserve carbon rims. if you have the legs (and some skill), it will go where you point it. i know many wonder about its climbing compared to the v2 and the answer is simply: better; please keep up the good work guy but not too much because i want to keep this one for a while!
@GuyKesTV5 жыл бұрын
So glad you're enjoying the bike OIB, Factory 36 is definitely a nice upgrade too. I'm pretty sure that Bronson will be a benchmark for a while when it comes to all round composure, control and climbing performance on properly rough terrain. Keep pinning it!

Jamie Mtb oh absolutely, there’s been a few Santa Cruz’s in the past that have definitely looked better than they actually rode - not least the original Bronson - but they really have nailed it this time round. It’s lighter than the previous bike and still a real player but SO much more controlled when things get crazy (like they did in places during filming).

I am days away from ordering either the Bronson or 5010. Having ridden neither, I’m basing this purchase purely on KZbin reviews. Would you say it’s worth buying the Bronson over the 5010 if I plan to do drops 4 foot and under? Riding mostly rooty/rocky Singletrack. I just worry about it muting out the more mellow flowy stuff.
@GuyKesTV5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, sorry for the delay. I'd say if you want to really taste the trail and hustle the flowy stuff then 5010 all the way. It'll handle decent drops without hesitation but keeps the ride totally alive whereas the Bronson can bury the details. I know a bunch of guys at Santa Cruz UK jumped on Bronson first but have switched to 5010 just to amp up the fun after having their favourite local trails slightly anaesthetised by the bigger bike.

Great video's mate - love this and the 5010 video. Whats your thoughts on the 2 bikes compared to one another. Great review as always thinking of getting the alloy framed model currently still running a whyte g150 would you say it's a worth while upgrade contemplated a g170s but don't like the low BB any advice would be appreciated
@GuyKesTV6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the low BB is the only thing that really bugs me on the Whytes as I prefer a longer crank. Off the top of my head the G150 probably has pretty similar geom to the Bronson (It's got longer and slacker on G160-170) but the suspension control of the Bronson is outstanding. I guess it depends how hard you've been using your Whyte and how tired it feels but I'd always reccomend a demo ride to help you decide as its a ton of money when you've already got a good bike.

I'm seriously considering a Bronson after watching/reading some of the more recent reviews. I'm coming from a Capra CF and although I don't usually find myself using up all the travel on offer I like the fact that I have a safety net when taking on some bigger drops and jumps. My question is, how capable is the new Bronson on the more kind of 'DH' stuff and how much can you 'get away' with? I also haven't put any spaces in my rear shock but would that help to take some bigger impacts on the new Bronson? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
@GuyKesTV6 жыл бұрын
Gareth Gear sorry fella, thought I’d already replied. Bronson should be right up your street. Doesn’t feel like you’ve got a ton of bouncy/soggy travel when pedalling or cornering but has got loads of control when you need your ass saving. It’s definitely saved me several times when I picked a fight with a bigger bit of trail than I realised!

黄帅 that sounds like the Bronson to me. Awesome all rounder from cruising trails to park. I’d go 2.3 for a bit more speed and cornering bite. 2.6 for smoothness and drifting. Hope that helps
@percytakacs33436 жыл бұрын
Guy, how does the 2019 Bronson compare to the Pivot Mach 5.5? Your review for the 5.5 was very positive. I demoed the 5.5 and liked it descending but found the seat tube too slack and the front end light for technical climbing...also it felt a little uninspired rather than rabid when climbing and generally a bit draggy but could this have been down to the 35mm internal width (aluminium) rims fitted? Thank you for your thoughts
@GuyKesTV6 жыл бұрын
Hi again Percy. wider rims and tyres can certainly 'quiet' things down which feels slower (though they are actually normally quicker on rougher ground). DW Link (5.5) is definitely more neutral and less obviously positive through the pedals than VPP (Bronson) but there's less rattle and kickback over bumps under power. So yes, more of a docile dog than a rabid one!
@chazmann7496 жыл бұрын
Hey Guy. What would your thoughts be on how much difference the weight of the alu versions would make to ride quality? The alu S I’m looking at is almost 5lb’s heavier - will this be considerably noticeable you think? Thanks for the fantastic reviews!
@GuyKesTV6 жыл бұрын
It'll be a little slower up the climbs and less easy to charge out of corners but if anything the grip and smoothness will be a shade better as there's more bike sticking to the ground.
@chazmann7496 жыл бұрын

Thoughts on the leverage ratio of the new Bronson for heavyweight riders, 240 pounds or 108kg? Really get a kick out of your review process! Entertaining and informative
@GuyKesTV6 жыл бұрын
Dan Williams I’d already asked Josh at Santa Cruz about the leverage ratio and got this reply: “Bronson starts at 3.1 and ends at 2.6, and is a pretty darn straight line (but progressive). It flattens out at the end which keeps it from being impossible to get full travel. The primary goal of this curve is maximum traction at the top of travel, with midstroke support to encourage aggressive riding.” You’re likely to be running pretty high pressures but not too excessive and the piggyback means more damping oil to cope with heat build up. I’m pretty certain Santa Cruz don’t have a weight restriction either, I know they don’t on Highball and Blur. I’ll ask SC direct though, in case they advise a coil shock which obviously removes any concerns about peak shock pressure.
@GuyKesTV6 жыл бұрын
Dan Williams just got a reply from Josh the brand manager at SC: “Hey Guy, that should be totally fine. The shocks go up to 325 if need be. He'll probably want ~290psi. No problem. Josh JOSH KISSNER | PRODUCT MANAGER SANTA CRUZ BICYCLES”

New 5010 will be closer in feel to your old Bronson. Have you watched the test video on here? kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXamlp9obbCWZtU New Bronson is still a really fun, poppy bike though and climbs really well, particularly if you sit and spin up technical stuff rather than stand and stomp.

Not sure what would be more suitable for my riding, the 5010 or the Bronson. I ride trail centres and fast, rocky, gnarly Welsh off-piste rides. What do you think?
@GuyKesTV6 жыл бұрын
There's a small, steep, rocky climb in front of you before a long rad descent. Are you going to sprint at it hard as possible, launch into the descent, hop and pop as much as possible then hang on for the rest, or gear down one, cruise up smoothly and then power into the descent blasting through as much as possible on the pedals?
@ollydickinson21966 жыл бұрын
Personally, I’d cruise up the hill and save my energy for the downhill, and go as fast as I can down. But, if I do encounter something to jump or pop off I will.

@NDURcycling6 жыл бұрын
2 things i dont get is why they mix brands between fork and shok and why there is no place for 29er wheels when its plus compatible. a 29er bronson would be a massiv bike. so its to close to the nomad. i dont know why i should get a bronson when i can have a nomad which climbs the same but has more travel. and its not lighter than last year its a little heavier.
@GuyKesTV6 жыл бұрын
Santa Cruz generally work out which shock brand works best with each bike and then stick with it right through, so Bronsons all have a Rock Shox Super Deluxe. The geometry is centred around 27.5 x 2.4 or 27.5 x 2.6 and the flip chip doesn't change ride height/geometry as much as the Tallboy/Hightower chip. It will take a 2.8 and you could probably squeeze a smaller volume 29er tyre in but it will ride higher than intended. My guess is that a specific lower linkage driven 29er is in the plans at some point. Sorry, to clarify the frame is around 150g lighter size for size. Builds might take it heavier.
@NDURcycling6 жыл бұрын
thx for your replay. but why they dont use pike or lyrik to match with the shock brand? I know that it does not really matter but I just do not understand the decision.
@1brokenspoke1896 жыл бұрын
Because its nothing to do with what shock or fork is best for the job its about Santa Cruz getting the best deal for them

The Santa Cruz site states that the new Fox DPX2 and X2 will not fit. Also, the new Fox 36 Grip2 is phenomenal, IMHO. I've ridden both and I do not feel like the Nomad climbs nearly as well as the new Bronson. The Bronson's not exeptional at climbing but it's pretty good, the Nomad climbs ok but the front wheel wanders and it bobs a little more when pedaling.

Chris Green it’s very different to the old one. That actually felt like it had less travel than 150mm in a very poppy, physical way. New bike is much smoother through bigger chunks and tracks the ground better. Not as interactive (go for new 5010) but more consistently controlled and a surprisingly efficient and effective climber.

..excellent vid,from the best tester in the world,imho....my biggest problem is money,so i'm looking at the cheaper end of mtb's...would you ever do a review of the new Boardman mtr. bikes guy?...been waiting for a review on them for a while(since Boardman released them)and no-body has done one yet,i don't think...or would you recommend something else?...cheers,Topsy!

Hi Topsey, I'm definitely hoping to get the new Boardman FS in to test, I was really impressed with the new hardtail. I'll definitely have the new Calibre BBB on here soon too. in the meantime there's a 4 way budget FS test I've written in the current MBUK with Calibre, Vitus, Sonder and Norco in there and I think MBR have done the FS Boardman and loved it.

I bought a SC HTLT and part of the reasoning pie was their Warranty, however I'm not sure if life really means life in this instance. Though I could see them supporting a manufacturing defect failure over long periods I think Life means a reasonable timeframe for the item in question. So what's a reasonable life for a MTB?. I do not agree with other manufacturers that put time bound limits on Manufacturing defects claiming the falsehood that a MD will present itself within some arbitrary timeframe... utter nonsense.

I'm pretty sure that SC genuinely cover their frames for the life of the original owner, which is very rare for the industry. Like you say most cover an arbitrary 3-5 years but if it's going to go it'll likely go within the first few weeks or at most first year. Welds can fail over time if they're not quite right though. I'll check with SC to be double sure that life means life anyway.

throw a shorter stem on it will be way better...small as possible 35-40mm
@GuyKesTV6 жыл бұрын
Yep, I'd agree with that. I've run the Pacenti P-dent bar and 25mm stem combo on the Nomad and it's awesome.

I'm not expecting anything that radical on production bikes from brands though.
