Back in 1993 when most of the video was shot, the helpers would be cut off at Gallinas & follow the WEPX coal loads downhill to Jansen on the South track.

Wow, to this day I never would have guessed back then that this fine railroad would have dissappeared. Yes, the tracks and routes are still there, but the identity, operation style, and the beautiful paint scheme are now history.

Even now old ATSF employees call their company the Santa Fe.

1993 was quite the beehive of activity on this route. Especially with detouring UPS SHOOTERS during the Spring.

Classic, beautiful paint scheme. Sad that the Santa Fe's gone.

If only more Leslies were the mainstay now. They have so much soul and character. They’re built the same but overtime, they don’t all sound the same.

It would be such a treat if they made AC44CW's in the traditional Blue-Yellow scene. I only saw one in Hobbytown, USA in N-scale.

Let me tell you folks, 1993 was probably the best time to visit this line. Between early March into early May, three maintenance-of-way projects took place on the Southern freight route through Texas & eastern New Mexico resulting in work windows disrupting the normal flow for hours at a time. As a result, CHICO decided to send their fleet of UPS SHOOTERS over the Northern Route via Raton & Glorietta Passes. The end result was that railfans had the RARE opportunity to witness SF'S fleet of FOUR-AXLE SUPERFLEETS sprinting across the flat Colorado & New Mexico deserts at 70MPH splitting the fabled semaphores & battling the steep grades of Raton & Glorietta in both directions.

It was inevitable, though. Krebs was on good terms with BN and its leaders, and Santa Fe was too small to hold its own in the long term. If BN wouldn't have gotten them, then UP would've done so.

Interestingenough4 then it would have been UPSF! Union Pacific Santa Fe!
@Interestingenough47 жыл бұрын
+AndyMickeyD56 Gaming Maybe. What's interesting is that UP actually offered MORE money for Santa Fe than BN did, but Krebs wouldn't have it and did everything in his power to make sure UP wouldn't get anywhere. UP finally gave up, but BN was forced to open up the checkbook and pay a lot more than what they offered initially.

This video makes me sad. I go to school in Trinidad Colorado, right on the North side of Raton pass, and currently the only trains that run on this are Amtraks Southwest chief.. I would love for freight to come back through these parts again. The video shows how Santa Fe actually took care of this line, and now, it is falling apart, and might loose amtrak service. Times have really changed.
@TheRizzo35010 жыл бұрын
Yeah I know what you mean. I recently took Amtrak through their. Departing from Flagstaff Arizona. The tracks are completely overgrown and ran down. I drive back and forth from Denver to Flagstaff quite often. Raton is a scary place at night. Every time somehow I have to stop in Raton for fuel. I'm going to plan better next time lol..
@flashperson10 жыл бұрын
***** Haha I know how you feel, I run that same route, I live down in Phoenix. Raton could be a nice place, but since there is no railroad there is no industry, no jobs, and kind of a crappy place to live haha

I love those old Santa Fe units. And the sound of those old Leslie RS3L's. Too bad BNSF couldn't have at least kept the sound of the old Leslie's. What they have is not only ugly, with what I call "The Tennis Shoe Wedge", but that sound the horn makes would wake the dead. It's gross. Too bad BNSF couldn't fall into receivership sometime, and be bought up by enough of us ATSF fans. The warbonnet would come back in a Hell of a hurry! Mike in Fresno, Ca.

does line run through trinidad colorado? because, if it does, there is now more freight service through there anymore... it all go to la junta colorado, then comes down into new mexico.

BNSF will file for abandonment within the next 1 or 2 years. I imagine Amtrak will be put onto the Amarillo/Clovis sub. Even though NM and CO do not want this to happen neither state can afford to keep Raton Pass open for just two daily Amtrak's and the promise of commuter rail. The coal mine at the summit is closed and the only local stopped in 2009 I've heard.
@Interestingenough47 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Kansas and Colorado have been bailing Amtrak out on that one, but I've heard that it's pretty much inevitable that sooner or later, Amtrak will either have to cancel the service or reroute it through Wichita and Amarillo. BNSF is planning on getting rid of the old Santa Fe transcon between Lamy and La Junta.

I like warbonnet paint scheme but it doesn’t age well and B40-8’s are trash. Terrible for switching (which is what they’re usually used for now on yard jobs, roadswitchers etc), take forever to load and no flow meter for the brake pipe.
