2:31 that tiny little clip just flooded my mind with memories of hanging out int he garage with my grandpa. We would sometimes roast dogs in the wood stove. and yes, they ALWAYS taste better this way, for what ever reason.

@@KyleRoyerKnives got my first one fully forged...driving myself crazy going for a perfect hamon enhancing polish, with no scratch marks X_X. I'll email you a picture once I got the polish and sheath finished as i would be intrested in a critique by a master smith. The sheaths I make right now are just a thermal plastic called instamorph and paracord.

This is the video I needed to see. I love that knife style! And it looks like something I could actually do...in a month. I don't have the fancy sanders, or an anvil for that matter. But I do have an imagination! You've convinced me to make my own knife!! It's still going to be awhile before I actually do it, but I'm going to keep it in the back of my mind. Maybe try to find a cheap belt sander before I start. Everyone should own a belt sander anyway. Thanks for the inspiration! I love the tiny bits of hand-forging that showed through in the handle and blade. They're perfect imperfections.

I have the exact same forge but to avoid the meltdown problem I covered it with chamotte bricks & clay from inside, and I use an old vacuum cleaner as an air flow (connected the hose to the blow end). Works like magic. This little sucker can even melt steel if I leave it in the coal for few seconds too long.

A few weeks ago i forged my first knife blade. I was a little diappointed that I put little crater in it by hitting on a flake of scale that got stuck to it while forging. Now I'm glad to see that things like that also happen to a very perfectionist master blade smith like Kyle.

I love the uni-body concept and super clean / simplistic design concept. It would be great to do a damascas knife like this but without the curl at the hilt. Clean the inside of the cut out and finish it too of course =)

A question. I was told to never use a round file to test for hardness since they are meant to sharpen chainsaw blades and are far harder than a round or bastard file and might convey that a 60 HC blade post quench wasnt hardened. Yes?

When i built my first forge i used a cheap charcoal grill and some plumbing fixtures. you will also what to try to make a clicker braker. the peen on your cross peen hammer is great for breaking up charcoal.
