*** It's amazing and wonderful so many of you are reaching out with job offers for Mona. Your compassion is commendable. The thing is Mona needs some time inside with support services, otherwise, she would not be able to maintain employment. It's extremely rare that a person can go from homelessness to a job without support to heal, and that support must include housing. Mona is a great example of why we all need to advocate for more affordable housing and mental health services. This compassion that's driving you to offer Mona a job, please use it to help all of the homeless women like her sleeping outside. I cannot stress enough how important housing and support services are to help people with the trauma of homelessness. Homelessness is a growing, national crisis. It should be addressed in Washington. Bottom line: Housing is the solution. We need more resources to get folks into housing. Demand action. With your help, we can end homelessness. Click here invisiblepeople.tv/get-involved/ to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

The solution is getting rid of regulations on the housing market so that prices can go down, then cut some inefficient government spending programs and cut taxes further making things cheaper and it also becomes easier to get a job. Do never let the government do it, it will be corrupted so fast you cant even imagine it.

I was near homeless only 3 years ago when I was laid off during covid. It all happened so quickly. My apartment lease had just ended (horrible timing) and they wouldn't renew, I had no family support, I had no income, and my gf since high school left me. A close friend of mine passed from a stroke related to Covid, and I entered a really deep depression where I couldn't get out of bed. I was living in a shared bedroom Airbnb and got myself in triple-digit debt and got severely addicted to alcohol. It's really a miracle that I dug out of that. I never judge anyone that is homeless now.

Everyone needs an emergency fund. They say 6 months expense but honestly, 1 year income is better. Unfortunately, even people making good money are living paycheck to paycheck. Mostly by choice because we can't get control of our impulses. Used to be me. I was lucky to retain my job through covid. If I would have lost it I would have been screwed. Too much debt, too much irresponsible spending. Scared the crap out of me. Now I saved $250k in retirement and have a 6 month emergency fund working towards a full years salary. Nice that money markets are paying over 5% I keep the emergency fund in there. Hope things keep going well for you. Save and invest as much as possible. I'm pushing hard to get to 1 million invested as quickly as possible. Sounds like you could easily achieve that in less than 10 years. Moving towards complete financial independence as soon as I can. Life is hard, it is not easy, and it is not fair. But it is not as bad as the KZbin comments section or an average news article will make you believe. You will have options, you will have friends. You will make good choices and bad choices, and you'll look back on them and wish you made other choices. 580k people are homeless in the US, 330 million people. Do the math. Yes, it could be you. It is not likely. A solid way to look at society is, a game. Except with real consequences. If you die, you actually die. Etc. As such, while no one is immune from the plight of this woman, you'll likely be fine. Just choose a college major that is mundane but actually useful, and you could reasonably do it for a career. I recently met a dude at my job who got a degree in safety management. I asked him why (thinking, gee what 18 year old considers that a calling, I admit a bit judgemental of me). His response was, I chose a major where I knew I could get a job. .... Do that. Thus for instance if you're good at math, don't go for math. Go for something that uses math. Same for English or anything else, and think about the 20 year job prospects in that industry. We'll still need nurses and doctors in 20 years. Will we need as many broadcast journalists? Probably not, as it's a dying medium as younger populations get their media online or via social media. Etc. Worst case, you can also pursue a high end career that is in demand abroad. Many good to live in nations need more engineers and architects etc. Get a degree in that, and you can move to a country that matches your values. As for passions, get a minor in them, or, double major. But make sure whatever you study is practicable and not idealistic. Good luck.

Being smart helps but it is difficult to find a quick cure for homelessness. The first thing I would do is grab a nanny job that requires you live on the premises. I’d get in to see a counselor at the community college. I’d create a five year plan and begin studying at night for a degree. Along the way I would grab connections and letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation can come from attending church and participating in the religious education program, your teachers in the college or university, and your workplace. In five years you will have what you need to make a new start with a place of your own. It is painful and seems impossible but it isn’t if you stick with your plan and keep a steady head on your shoulders. While living in my car I realized I could relate to others in their cars or worse situations and encourage them to place their faith in Jesus for his deliverance... maybe the employer had too much overhead and couldn't afford paying somebody who couldn't be depended on every day. This can be fixed though. Don't blame the employer, he may very well have had his reasons from his point of view. But do blame the lack of regulations. With the proper worker's rights laws, the employer would have to think twice before hiring in the first place. Like mandatory 16 days paid sick leave (in a row). 3 months standard leave of notice which may be challenged in court if not resonably justified. And worker insurance which accounts for force majeure like a fire. Maybe it would have taken the employer a couple more months before he could employ somebody. Or maybe the pay would be $24 an hour instead of $25 to account for these risks. But it would be worth it for everybody in the end. We have these laws in Norway.

If you choose not to have home insurance. If you choose to work in low pay, low skilled call-center type jobs with an expensive BS degree. If you don't have any savings. The majority of households don't make those mistakes. There is a reason a bank won't finance your mortgage without home insurance on your property. If you live in California, and your home is not insured for fire damage, my empathy is limited. It's STUPID. Home insurance should ALWAYS be in your budget. These interviews obviously do not tell the whole story. They are biased from the start. Why didn't they ask her if she had home insurance? Or life savings? I suspect that what she needs is a safe and stable home with all of that provided for quite a while as she heals before she could hold a job. It is very difficult to bounce back once someone goes down that far. It's not impossible, but she will need a lot of help and probably time. I thought of even offering her a home myself with me. But I'm not stable enough myself to be able to do that. I'm praying for the ability to remain housed, too. But I think she needs that from someone. A safe home that she doesn't have to pay for. @J. P Bruh what? People with homes, cars, internet, cell phones struggle to get decent paying jobs; she doesn't have that. She needs a place to shower or risk being fired cause she may some how lack "professionalism". You need to provide a physical address and provide ID for your job application, which if she came from Santa Monica so she might not have. Plus her house literally freaking BURNED DOWN. On top of that she probably doesn't have a cell phone, so how exactly is she supposed to even get a call back for an interview? It's really freaking hard to get back up when you don't have a home or money. Honestly what an ignorant comment.

No, this is what happens in the USA. There are places in the world where the fear of being homeless is not actually constantly at the back of your mind in case you fall ill, lose your job or a fire destroys your area because the government is actually working to support people. I lost my job due to Covid in France and it took me quite some time to find a new one because aeronautics was the main industry keeping us afloat in my area and everything went super downhill and yet thankfully not even for a moment I feared being homeless and putting food on the table.

I agree you need to move out of the area. People will go homeless all over staying in a certain place, sometimes you just need to look into cheaper more affordable situations even if it's out of your comfort zone. I lived in this old creepy 1850's house for 3 years and almost the whole time I had no job I just drove Amish in the area and in the summer my husband would do work for our landlord and he would drop the rent. Normal rent was $450/month but in the summer we sometimes got it down to $100-$200 which was nothing. The house sucked, it was old and not updated. The area was great though it was country living. Anyways my point is sometimes you got to relocate to better your situation.

That is absolutely correct. I was married 27 years with 3 kids to a drug addict. When It got really bad I decided I had to get out. My family refused to allow us to stay with them. They were scared of the ex. So my church rented me an apt for a month. I found a lot of community support, got my first job and made it by the grace of GOD. Not friends or family for sure. Now I have my own business and am very happy. Strangers are more helpful than people you know. I certainly didn't have a masters degree, I had quit school at 16 to get married. Keeping a job isn't just about a degree or how smart you are. It's about fitting in and whether people like you.
