I used to work the rail yards in Canton and the idiots race the crossings all the time. Once, coupling a string of cars by the old Harvester plant at dusk, a station wagon raced to make the crossing with the train in motion. It scared me as it was going to be close. The car had more children in it than one woman could have of her own. With the rail car occupying the crossing the station wagon full of kids just streaked by. I guess time was more important than the lives of hers and other's kids. The chances we take to cut corners!

The crossing controller started flashing the lights a full 60 seconds before the train arrived at the crossing. A properly designed crossing will give 30 seconds warning. The FRA requires 22 seconds minimum. This excessive warning time of 60 seconds only encourages drivers to go through the flashing lights due to the slow speed and long distance from the street.
@MrRCGNL4 жыл бұрын
@KC Rocket: Fully agree, the overload of signals, especially the accoustic one like blowing the horn every 2 secs or so creates a situation the car drivers don't 'hear' the anymore. Some places don't have the arms down to stop traffic. I have seen a few of those driving around the country, and I have been honked at, cussed at and given the finger because I stay stopped until the train passes. I put safety first, no matter who behind me gets irritated. I would rather be an asshole than be dead. What those are, are "permissive" railroad crossings, that are these permissive left turn signals, where you may proceed after you stop if you get through before the train. That is part of all this bullshit about keeping traffic flowing to reduce emissions I want to get where I am going, so I wait for the red lights to go off, even at permissive railroad crossing, and I don't give a shit about emissions that my car, and other cars behind me are putting out, and give a shit how many drivers behind get irritated.

One time this happened to me...I was on my bike with my mom behind me. I go over the train tracks and I see a big huge train light in the distance. I quickly peddle faster and screamed train behind me at my mom. Half a mile down the road the railroad crossings went off. Me and my mom where at the stop light watching it go by. It could have been going 50 miles an hour but luckily it was going about 5-10 miles per hour. Till this day it haunts me. This is why you always look for trains!!

the train was going as slow as a old lady that's why nobody took the warning seriously until the train got very close to the crossing. i don't get why people have to overreact as if the cars were crossing the tracks as if a 70 mph train was coming after the signals activated?
@kristinwiebold24335 жыл бұрын
I was just shocked how vehicle drivers and even that semi ignored the warning devices and the loud train honking and still crossed the train tracks. They were very lucky that the train was going so slow. I heard of a train wreck where the train was going 80 mile per hour. There wouldn't have been time for the vehicles to cross or for the train to stop. when the lights are blinking and bells are ringing and train is honking it's horn it is not time to play how many vehicles can cross before the train hits one.

Maybe they think the waiting is too long or maybe they think the train comes really slowly??? can you people just think this through for a minute? the train is far away and going extremely slow some of the drivers stopped and peek to determine if they had enough time to cross and proceeded to pass the tracks since it was still safe to go across judging by the speed of the train and the distance it was at.
