Jim Phillips was one of the reasons i studied graphic design back in the days. Davis Carson was another.

When I was a kid in the 80's my friend across the street got a Roskopp board with the crazy face. It was the coolest skateboard I had ever seen and still is. I loved just looking at it.

I've been a skater and a graffiti writer for many years now. Style matters as much as contacts. In skate world as in the art world you should be in the right place at the right time and get lucky enough to take the opportunity.

Jim Phillips created some of the raddest graphic art ever. So cool to see how Shepard was influenced by him

SO refreshing when a collaboration like this involves an artist with a shared history in skating.

Great watch ! … I make a bunch of skate art myself when not ripping or on the clock. Sometimes I specifically make pieces to help those push through and keep their spirits from running dry this time of the year in MI.

I was a skater in Rhode Island in the late 80's. I remember Shepard working at Watershed. His Andre the Giant has a posse stickers were stuck everywhere in the city of Providence. Loved that Cory O'Brian graphic back then. Had the t shirt.

Phillips was such a personal influence... his work reminds me of a blend of Robert Crumb with a Rat Fink flavor. Legendary works.

One more thought (this one has to do with graphic design). I was/am heavily influenced by Jim Phillips' art; its in my creative DNA. My mind was blown when I stumbled upon the art of Virgil Finlay. I recall with fondness discovering "the source" of the iconic images produced by both of these heavies. Jim didn't plagiarize - he augmented and pushed Finlay's material and made it his own. Kinda like what Shepard alludes to in this segment.

guys does this mean that a collab with shepard is actually happening? would be epic a collab between santa cruz and obey, literally a collab worth the skateboarding hall of fame.

Why didn’t he add the glow to the skeleton from the fireball in his hand? The mandala on the nose doesn’t fit with having a skeleton graphic.
