I remember watching Peter Green do this at the Boston Tea Party in early 1970. It was about the third time I saw them there and not long before he left the band. The video of that performance is on KZbin. I also met Christine McVie and Jenny Boyd at the bar (it was really a refreshment stand- no alcohol). I had no idea that they were with the band and asked if they wanted to go out for a few drinks after the show. They never said they were with the band, just very nicely and politely turned me down. I thought they were probably college students or tourists. 😊 It wasn't until a few years later when I saw Christine on the cover of a new Fleetwood Mac album that I realized she was one of the girls there that night. And it was years after that that I realized the other girl was Jenny Boyd, who married Mick Fleetwood a few months after that encounter.

Abraxas is one of the best of all time. When I first heard the album back in late '60s I was totally mesmerized. I am Latin but I didn't care for the music my parents listened to. When I came to the U.S. I loved rock & roll and when Santana mixed rock w/ those Latin rhythms I was totally blown away. He got my Latin blood boiling! He is so talented that words cannot explain it. In a class by himself.

I don’t know why so many people are writing 👎 comments to Santana’s version of this song and comparing it with another artist’s? It’s not fair to say that one is better than another in music - EACH performer’s treatment of the same song will never be exactly identical to another’s, and that’s the way it should be imo! Carlos sounds great 👍 to me here, as he does in his other songs/videos. BTW: I’m NOT a 🎸ist, but rather was a classically trained pianist and organist since I was 5 (I’m now in my late 60’s), but do love ❤️ ALL genres of music to this day. I like them so much that I bought tickets to see them in concert next month (May ‘23) with front row center stage floor seats. I had an extremely hard time finding someone to even go with me, or who had ever heard of him or his music (and it was my ‘treat’ too)! Finally a Dominican friend of mine was familiar with Santana AND liked them as much as I do to go with me. *** Hope they play ‘BMW’ at it! And I hope too that nobody is going to ‘attack’ me bc of my comment on THIS video, as has happened to me before on other videos bc I didn’t agree with their views and thoughts!

Lovely ot see this, how one wonderful musician shows his respect to a fellow musician...only to be rewarded by such a lovely understated solo by the Man himself. Great song, such a hypnotic tune; that being said, it isn't one of my top 5 Peter Green songs though it is rather telling that this tune was enough to launch another musician's career . RIP Peter Green

Peter Green wasn't interested. The reason he was at the 1998 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony this recording is from, was that Fleetwood Mac was inducted that year too. Everybody expected him to join his old bandmates on stage there of course but he decided he'd rather jam with Santana. The two other early FM guitarist, Spencer and Kirwan didn't turn up for the ceremony and the two Bobs weren't even invited. He did play with FM twice after he left though. When Jeremy Spencer walked out, Green agreed to help out so they could finish the tour they were on. But he refused to play any of the old songs and he used a fake name - Peter Blue of all things. He also rejoined them in studio in 1979 to play on "Brown Eyes" (on the Tusk album) but he didn't want his name in the credits. Then there's Mick Fleetwoods 1981 solo album "The Visitor" where Peter Green plays guitar and sing on "Rattlesnake Shake" and plays on "Super Brains". But really, Peter Green didn't just leave Fleetwood Mac in 1970, he retired. He still played concerts and recorded albums whenever he felt like it but a steady career was out of question. He wasn't interested in that kind of comittment and even if he was, the combination of schizophrenia and the long term effects of LSD made it impossible.

So many people, though not everyone, overlook Peter Green. Wrote the song. One of the greatest guitarists ever. Completely different style from Santana, heavily influenced and greatly admired by BB King. He, in turn, influenced Gary Moore, who of course developed his own, melt-you-face style but could still play with BB. There is a KZbin clip of them. Gary’s admiration is obvious. For non-shredding guitar genius listen also to the transcendentally beautiful “Thorntree in the Garden,” written by Bobby Whitlock, performed by him, Duane Allman, and Eric Clapton, on acoustics on the Layla album.

True Peter Green had a different attitude about playing fast by the time he was in Fleetwood Mac, though he was still capable of amazing speed, he didn't have much interest in showboating and said "Playing fast doesn't mean a thing, It's something I used to do with John Mayall when things weren't going too well. But it isn't any good. I like to play very slowly, and feel every note. It comes from every part of my body and my heart and into my fingers.". Not that he didn't still occasionally play fast passages when they added something to the song.
