Each time I see this performance, I cry because it reminds me of how, for a brief time way back, we actually had a true moment of peaceful celebration through the most amazing music and musicianship that we just can't find today anymore. Even the best musicians today can't do this because there's just too many other obstacles in their way. Not organic like this was. From the heart, soul and guts...no gimmicks, no recording tricks, no fakery. Just straight up great, amazing, soul-stirring music. The crowd too! Look at how it was all about the moment, the music, and the joy. Yes, I cry, especially now. Joy and peace and love seem like things we aspired to and has now eluded us. Thanks, Jayvee, for bringing us a few moments of joy through your reaction. Much needed!

Yep, and you can really see the difference between this original, peaceful, non-commercial Woodstock and the 1990s Woodstock, which was violent, aggressive, and very, very commercial, with hawking of products all over the place. Society today bears more in common with that aggressive, violent, 1990s Woodstock than with the original 1969 Woodstock, of which I see no trace today.

We're losing all organic movements - in business, entrepreneurship and tiny biz, in the green or ecological movement, in the homesteading or back to the land movement. We're all being slowly squeezed into the renter - city dweller - corporate consumer mode. These kids had it right, and I feel the only hope for us is to throw out our phones, buy land together and follow in their footsteps. Small, local communities are the wave of the future if we're going to have one.

And it should be noted that about 98% of the crowd at Woodstock was stoned throughout the entire three-day show...as well as most of the performers. My sister was there...I've heard ALL the stories.

Carlos Santana is an excellent and gifted guitarist. But he doesn't fit into the category of the greatest of all time , doesn't even come close. One must not let personal likes and taste guide you in a statement and decision like that. Way better than him are Jeff Beck, Jim McCarty, Roy Clark to be sure, Joe Walsh, Glen Campbell, Duane Allman, David Gilmour, Eric Clapton to name a few.

@@bobgarr6246 You're walking a fine line, as well. The same might be said about your choices. I'm a guitarist, not that that matters, but I, or anyone could counter what you said by saying that the same could be said for your choices. After a certain point, it becomes more a matter of taste.

@asquare9316
@asquare9316 3 жыл бұрын
@@RobtJude The bands that the movie producers chose for the film (documentary almost) all became stars, including Melanie, who honestly wasn't very good. Many bands that were there were left out of the movie. Blood, Sweat, and Tears, being mostly former jazz musicians asked not to be in the movie as they were out of tune for that performance (hard to keep wind instruments in tune outside)and although they became a big deal, they could have become a bigger deal if they had been in the movie. There is a woodstock album (several dvds) which has all of the musical performances, I think. I have it, there is some great stuff on it, and some not so great stuff. I was a few years too young to go there, it must have been amazing, if uncomfortable, with all the rain and everything. A Beautiful Day had one great song, White Bird. Worth a listen.

500000 people. No one heard of Santana before this, the drummer was the youngest performer at woodstock at 18 years, and he had only been playing with the band for 2 weeks before Woodstock. Carlos Santana is one of the world's greatest guitarists. What is so amazing about this performance is he said he didn't know what he was doing, he did the whole performance from muscle memory, because a short time before someone offered him some LSD, and he accepted believing they weren't playing till early hours next day, then someone came up and said "your'e on"

Santana had been the "house band" at the Fillmore West and the owner, Bill Graham got them the gig at Woodstock. They were relatively unknown at the time. This performance (and being in the movie) was their break-out point. Carlos Santana (guitar player) said he was trippin' balls on mescaline when they ended up being put on stage early. He said the neck of his guitar turned into a large, writhing snake while he was playing and that he was just praying to God not to f*ck things up.

Thanx a whole bunch for this! I have seen this many, many times. I saw this on TV right after this performance at the age of 13. I have loved Carlos ever since. He is an Icon in many ways. I am thrilled for you, that u got to finally check this out! I am so proud that all this great music we grew up with lasted. We thought it would! I had that argument with her for 30 plus yrs. It finally ended when she was 70, caught tapping her foot and singing Beatles songs while seated in my van, me driving. She finally couldn't deny it! Also, my husband and I were fortunate the summer of 2000 when we got to seat directly in front of this band in Chicago on the "Supernatural" tour. Carlos actually played to me for a very long time that nite, eye to eye sometimes. Just incredible. The whole band was interactive and tried to pull u right in if u appeared receptive. And we were. What a slice of cherished memory this is! I am 65 now and really chronically ill. I am so grateful that we made so many unique memories that I draw from daily. Live life to the fullest. Now I can enjoy the sounds of various birds on my porch or ponder the family dynamics of 16 cats that live outdoors by the house. Time is precious, every little simple thing might be really special too. Peace and enjoy the music...good is good no matter when or what genre.

I saw these guys live in the 70's at the Silverdome holding about 80,000. Two bands, Santana opened for the Rolling Stones. When the stage lights came on, Santana had a Ricky Ricardo three level high band set up all in white covering an entire end zone with 20 guys in it. Two full drum kits, numerous other drummers. Holy shit was all I could think of what were the Rolling Stones thinking by letting these guys on first. Non stop, one song right into another. I couldn't believe the show.

A truly great and energetic performance. But for me, the most incredible thing is that the drummer, Mike Shreeve, was still a teenager when he did this !!! To be that young and have proven yourself to, and be accepted by the industry, and respected at such a young age just goes to show the level of talent we have here. Incredible. Proud to say that was MY time and era.

For me this is the single best performance at Woodstock. And this performance was HUGE in establishing them with the record buying public.

True story: Gregg Rolie (keyboards and vocals) was reminiscing about Santana and said "it was very strange because we suddenly had people coming up and asking us about the meaning of life. Hell, we were just a bunch of 22 and 23-year-old guys making music." Yeah, they were and they did.

I was never into heavy rock though my older brother still is, I remember hearing Santana in my parents house when he was home from the Royal Navy. I loved your reaction, they helped me see this music in a different way. I've never heard this song before as far as I know but the drums and guitar playing is great and something I have learned to appreciate over the years. You were well into it and rightly so, I can understand why so many people really enjoyed their music now. Take care and stay safe please, love hugs and Peace to you all Mary-Ellen UK

I got home from Vietnam a week before Woodstock. My hippie friends bought me a ticket and we hopped into Boyd’s VW bus and drove to New York. What a Trip. I can’t think of a better way to transition into civilian life. The weed was good, and I did a hit of red sunshine acid and that’s all I remember for hours. The music was so fine. The best part of it was there was nobody shooting at me.

I love the fact that the crowd AND the musicians were all tripping balls, and still, they gave us one of the best performances ever seen by humanity. Drugs do good things too, this is one of them.

It literally makes me happy to see you listen to this song for the first time !! I was 15 back in 87 and I watched Woodstock on PBS for their yearly tribute. I love watching young people experience old tunes. Have a great day and keep going !!

"I wasnt expecting this, man!" Neither was Carlos Santana, who thought they were to perform in the evening, dropped ACID in the morning, then was told of a change in the schedule. You're on NOW! Back when a drop of Liquid LSD on Sugar Cube was a ticket to ride on an Intergalactic journey thru the Cosmos...or a least take a trip and never leave the farm! Carlos said his guitar neck and head turned into a writhing snake, which he was wrestling and squeezing the notes out of! Truly a legendary performance in the annals of Rock History!
