Paul Simon has one of the richest catalogs in American music. He’s such an incredible songwriter & performer that I don’t even know where to start. Every album he made with Art Garfunkel is phenomenal, then he went solo and churned out one incredible song after another. His groundbreaking album Graceland features the South African choral group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, whom I once saw perform live. Absolutely transcendent!! He has also performed with the legendary Miriam Makeba. But I think it would be good to go back to Simon & Garfunkel to check out his early work first. They had a lot of hits! It’s impossible to pick favorites but I love “America” so much. I cry every time. Also “Homeward Bound,” “Hazy Shade of Winter,” and “Only Living Boy in New York.” And “The Boxer.” I better stop, but there are so many great ones!

He can take very simple things and use them to make something delicately highly complex, but in a very chill way. There is no master class for what he's got. Jayvee, you just spoke the exact words I want to shout to everyone younger than 35, who isn't familiar with Paul Simon: "WHERE HAVE I BEEN??" What a perfect way to describe what Millennials are missing! As a Simon superfan, I get total joy from watching your appreciation for him. Here's why I find him so special. Some songwriters are ingenious at lyrics/socially conscious themes (Dylan?). Others are skilled at catchy, bluesy, jazzy rhythms (Ray Charles). Some are brilliant with melody or harmony (Beatles, Gershwin). But I struggle to find any composer who masters all 3 like Paul Simon. Your commenters offered great ideas for his obvious hits (like "Bridge Over..."). But if you want a few overlooked gems, try "Gone At Last," "Hurricane Eye" (live version only!), "Quality," "Outrageous" or "How Can You Live in the Northeast."
