Truthfully, I can't find it reasonable to blame the driver alone in this case. Yeah, he got distracted, but he got distracted by his own supervisors. By that logic, they're just as much to blame as he is, not to mention the lack of modern equipment that would have slowed the train automatically. I can understand why they didn't make him serve time, though I think his license should have been taken away *forever.* Six months is almost an insult.

My thoughts as well!
@daseck693 ай бұрын
I was just about to write that. This plus the obvious safety violations in disabling the ATC system and the known dynamic instability of the generator cars at high speeds due to their heavy weight and unusual axle configuration did significantly raise the severity of this accident. You can even see in the video that it's the leading generator car tipping way before the rest of the train and thus forcing the rest of the train set to tip over with it. Still at the correct speed it wouldn't have happened but there should have been more than enough safety margin to prevent such a catastrophic outcome.

This wreck was something I’d never seen happened besides the Frankfurt wreck. Trains derailing from high speed curves. That’s a terrible thing to ever happen on trains. I feel so sorry for the passengers who perished in this accident. When I heard this wreck on ABC news in 2013. They’d said that 80 passengers died in this wreck. I didn’t expect that the death toll was that high. I feel so sorry for those ppl and their loved ones who are suffering with this wreck. And I don’t blame the engineer for not coming back to drive a train. He just couldn’t take it. I think the cause of the incident was bad management on railroad, the speed not decreasing or applying the brakes from the moment it hit the curve, and the engineer being on the phone and not seeing the bend up head caused the disaster.

A friend of mine had a harrower one: He booked that exact train to go to Santiago, but later he decided to get one a week before. Thing is, he forgot to tell his family, and when the accident happened, he was still in Santiago, dinning in a restaurant with no cell reception, which also wasn't far from the curve. When he came out, his phone was flooded with missed calls from his family, thinking he was on the train, that was when he knew about the accident. He went to the crash site and located the seat he had canceled. To his horror, he would had been sawn in half, and there was a dead family on the seats next to his.

The reason why ETCS did not kick in maybe because it is under ETCS STM mode (in baseline 2), NTC mode (in baseline 3). Where on board ETCS equipment will need specific transmission module to translate legacy ATP signal to show in cab. And it's just a transfer layer. ETCS stuff do not fitted here, and do not act here. (ETCS FS only available at L1 L2) Also what's more tragic is, seems ASFA can do up to 200kph. So that highspeed line ATP do not need ETCS, rather just ASFA to protect the train. So here we go. In Poland, ETCS L1/L2 is mandatory in sections >160kph. As legacy ATP (SHP) can not do faster speeds. ETCS can safely prevent train from overspeeding in FS mode. I thought this was due to dangerous ETCS transition period. which if implement is not very good, can cause lots of dangerous stuff happens. ETCS FS supervision ends too early, and train can still travel at very high speed. And driver failed to monitor signals that outside ETCS/ERTMS coverage.
