Lyrics [Verse 1] Oh! Santiana gained a day Away Santiana! "Napoleon of the West", they say Along the plains of Mexico [Chorus] Well, heave 'er up and away we'll go Away Santiana! Heave 'er up and away we'll go Along the plains of Mexico [Verse 2] She's a fast clipper ship and a bully good crew Away Santiana! And an old salty yank for a captain too Along the plains of Mexico [Chorus] [Verse 3] Santiana fought for gold Away Santiana! Around Cape Horn through the ice and snow Along the plains of Mexico [Chorus] [Verse 4] T'was on the field of Molly-Del-Ray Away Santiana! Well both his legs got blown away Along the plains of Mexico [Chorus] [Verse 5] It was a fierce and bitter strife Away Santiana! The general Taylor took his life Along the plains of Mexico [Chorus] [Verse 6] Santiana, now we mourn Away Santiana! We left him buried off Cape Horn Along the plains of Mexico

Couldn't help but send this to everyone I know, but the best reaction came from my mother who wanted to ask "how many artists are singing out of this man?" Also, a huge thank you from her for singing. I know it doesn't seem much, but she is a big fan of yours now, and this is now her favorite song. She doesn't speak English, but it was beautiful to translate it.

Santiana is a sea shanty with a winding history dating back to the 1850s. The song's likely inspiration was the Mexican-American War and the conflicts between General Antonio López de Santa Anna's forces and those of General Zachary Taylor. Its lyrics often exaggerate Santa Anna's victories, which may reflect the perspective of British sailors who deserted to fight alongside Mexico. Over the years, Santiana evolved through oral tradition, with different crews and singers changing the melody and verses depending on their needs. This tradition led to its transformation from a pump shanty to a popular capstan shanty, used to keep rhythm while working onboard ships. Secondary Source: Hugill, Stan. Shanties from the Seven Seas: Shipboard Work-Songs and Songs Used as Work-Songs from the Great Days of Sail. London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1961.

I so want to sing with you, you remind me singing with me da.... German, bass, and am bgetting the hang at 47 the karygyraa.... but damn, you are so beautiful in your voice, I had to share ith kids, and we all did our best......... thank ye so much, for voice and all such the meaning and lessons in all of your songs, it jst grabs e and tails along....... I am so thankful to hear you good sir, so thus my education don't shirk to y young ones, and they are in awe of your skills from what they hear and have saw....... you have helped us so much, though times good and tough, to hear and to learn what others do s[urn of history, the mystery, of wher'ere we have gone, through time, and circumstance, is it not just a dance? We are all folk... and that ain't no joke, we are all here, and we all do have fear, but them guys, men, women, and wise, explored the whole world, now there were some good and some bad that unfurled, but ..........we are all still here, that deserves such a tewar to remember what came and what indeed died, but remember we're all so alive. Sorry, was just off the top of my ead, my kids don't really like it, it seems too damn tru, buti make em,, say just such ryhmes too, for otherwise, outisde, me eyes, without this, they be all so lost too................... thank you for the lessons for me and for them, it comes naught but God, and so I do say....... AMEN! And don't bother with the letters, I am good with them you know, but when the sould sings.... oh well, let's-go, with the tempo and timbre, not dexterity of fanger, the though it comes out, no matter what drought, today, I love you all, and say just is so, now take it with love, and sow it just so.

So I'm insanely impressed by a capella groups like "Home Free", because they're so talented, and it's incredible how all of the elements each singer brings to the tablefit together so well. There's the really deep bass guy...the tenor with a smooth, lead vocalist sort-of voice, maybe another tenor or two who mainly serve to increase the harmony and create a "wall of sound" when necessary...and occasionally a beatboxer to provide the instrumental sounds. Put it all together, and you've got an incredible group. Amazing, even. BUT...then I stumble across Colm McGuinness. It's extremely rare to find a group of 4 or 5 people that bring everything needed to create some amazing a capella...but Colm's over here like, "hold my beer" (or is it "hold me flagon of ale"??)...doing it ALONE. The deep, DEEP bass...the smooth tenor lead vocals...even some alto and soprano sometimes! Like...wtf?? HOW? I don't know if you can beatbox as well...but master THAT, and you will have reached godly status, and I will literally worship you. No human being has the right to possess so much talent, AND be so very attractive at the same time. I'm guessing you've got the personality to match (I mean...how could you NOT based on the sheer perfection I've seen so far?)...so you MUST therefore NOT be human. You are divine. I'm an atheist...but a show of godly power that I can see and hear with my own eyes and ears CANNOT be denied.

Wow, I know the French version, and it's Santiano. I used to sing it at school and with my grandparents. Brings back a lot of memories, I love your version.

The guy of the song santiana actually "Santa Anna" was a real dude, 11 times dictator of México(no exageration there). And his leg was in fact blown away by a french warship (and was latter buried with full millitary honours, and i mean.. His leg, Santa Anna died much later at the ripe old age of 82)

@@leonake4194 I didn't know the story, I grew up with the French version and just assumed the person singing it wrote it 😅 I do like this version too, he didn't seem like a nice dude though 😆 (Same person, it's my other account)

@@thecaliforniaone yeah.. Curiosly enough i knew the song for a few years already, it just didnt click to me it was really about the Santa Anna guy from history books. The revelation came yesterday when i told my friends about him and how weird he was that i fact checked a few things i said and happen to read that this song was actually about him all along. About Santa Anna not being nice... He wasn't. He was the guy from the Alamo, the bad one that is. Yet he also happens to be responsible for the existance of bublegum so... Yeah the guy was really something else

Wow ! I just realize that the song my dad used to sing to us as kids from the French singer Hugues Aufray (Santiano) is actually a sea chant cover !

Love this! [Brand new subscriber here]. As a former Texan and present Californian, I flashed on Santa Anna, who engineered the massacre at The Alamo, and on the Santa Ana winds, which annually "massacre" the forests and underbrush of California. The Kingston Trio's 6-decades-old versions of "Drunken Sailor" and several Texas/California songs underpin my sheer pleasure at your renditions.
