And an old salty yank for a captain too Along the plains of Mexico [Chorus] [Verse 3] Santiana fought for gold Away Santiana! Around Cape Horn through the ice and snow Along the plains of Mexico [Chorus] [Verse 4] T'was on the field of Molly-Del-Ray Away Santiana! Well both his legs got blown away Along the plains of Mexico [Chorus] [Verse 5] It was a fierce and bitter strife Away Santiana! The general Taylor took his life Along the plains of Mexico [Chorus] [Verse 6] Santiana, now we mourn Away Santiana! We left him buried off Cape Horn Along the plains of Mexico

Santiana is a sea shanty with a winding history dating back to the 1850s. The song's likely inspiration was the Mexican-American War and the conflicts between General Antonio López de Santa Anna's forces and those of General Zachary Taylor. Its lyrics often exaggerate Santa Anna's victories, which may reflect the perspective of British sailors who deserted to fight alongside Mexico. Over the years, Santiana evolved through oral tradition, with different crews and singers changing the melody and verses depending on their needs. This tradition led to its transformation from a pump shanty to a popular capstan shanty, used to keep rhythm while working onboard ships. Secondary Source: Hugill, Stan. Shanties from the Seven Seas: Shipboard Work-Songs and Songs Used as Work-Songs from the Great Days of Sail. London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1961.

So I'm insanely impressed by a capella groups like "Home Free", because they're so talented, and it's incredible how all of the elements each singer brings to the tablefit together so well. There's the really deep bass guy...the tenor with a smooth, lead vocalist sort-of voice, maybe another tenor or two who mainly serve to increase the harmony and create a "wall of sound" when necessary...and occasionally a beatboxer to provide the instrumental sounds. Put it all together, and you've got an incredible group. Amazing, even. BUT...then I stumble across Colm McGuinness. It's extremely rare to find a group of 4 or 5 people that bring everything needed to create some amazing a capella...but Colm's over here like, "hold my beer" (or is it "hold me flagon of ale"??)...doing it ALONE. The deep, DEEP bass...the smooth tenor lead vocals...even some alto and soprano sometimes! Like...wtf?? HOW? I don't know if you can beatbox as well...but master THAT, and you will have reached godly status, and I will literally worship you. No human being has the right to possess so much talent, AND be so very attractive at the same time. I'm guessing you've got the personality to match (I mean...how could you NOT based on the sheer perfection I've seen so far?)...so you MUST therefore NOT be human. You are divine. I'm an atheist...but a show of godly power that I can see and hear with my own eyes and ears CANNOT be denied.
