Sanxingdui is a mysterious, highly sophisticated bronze-age civilization located in China. Sanxingdui ignites controversy because of its unique large-scale artifacts especially the bronze masks that don’t look Chinese. The DNA results on human remains are kept secret; even ‘though it appears that DNA samples were collected decades ago.
In my last video, we walked through my thought processes and reasoning on search for the real creators of Sanxingdui civilization. During my investigation, improbable candidates were eliminated; and eventually we arrived at the most reasonable answer: the steppe culture based in the Altai Mountains in Siberia.
In this video, I discuss the following:
• What are the shared aspects between Sanxingdui and the steppe culture?
• Who were the red-haired mummies found in Tarim Basin? Did they have any connections with the Sanxingdui people?
• Which steppe cultures could have interacted with Sanxingdui people during the Neolithic to Early Bronze Age periods?
• How did the creators of Sanxingdui get to this land?
Photos and films came from online sources.

You always amaze with the interesting investigation/ research videos. At the Aleutian chain islands, one of them had high cliffs against the ocean. The Aleut people always told about the giant red haired people’s who lived in the cliffsides, and attacked and ate them. Always perceived as folklore, until giant red haired people’s, who were mummified, were found in cave along cliffsides.

Hi Tina; This has been one of my favorite topics since I first heard about the Tarim Basin Mummies on a National Geographic special in the 1990s. Maybe you can't discuss the theory that the Uyghur people are decendants of the nomadic people, but the mummies were discovered in the Uyghur region. That might be why the DNA samples have been kept secret. There was a museum showing of some of them scheduled at Penn Museum in 2012 and the Chinese government decided to cut it short and only let some artifacts be exhibited, Sone of the original pictures of the mummies are missing now too. There were also carts in some burials that were the same as carts used by the Uyghur people in modern times. Also the people in the graves were tall and European-looking - one man was over 6' tall. Unfortunately, governments tend to only release what agrees with their agenda, no matter when or where. I doff my tall felt had to you for making this presentation! More interesting theories to ponder.

This is masterful, I salute you good seeker. The Scottish nobility claim descendancy fom the Scythians. The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry may be a testament to this. Some schools of thought name the Scythians and Saka tribes as belonging to the 10 lost tribes of Israel.

This one is awesome. The similarities between the Sanxingdui sculptures and those of meso and west coast North America are obvious. I’m going to look more into these pieces. Particularly the Tree of Life. I see at the bottom is a winged serpent just like in the Americas. It is not Chinese dragon style at all! Also, the emphasis on the spirals and birds atop the dripping flowers is exactly like the origin mural at Tepantitla in Teotihuacan. At the “Priests’ complex at the base of the Pyramid of the Sun. Wonderful similarity.

What makes these masks so different is the shape of the eyes and pointy ears. The nose is also unique, but not a standout for me. Similar to the scifi depictions in early comic books in the 50s and 60s . I don't rule out far away travelers, a possibility, albeit low on my list. Could the people residing there have seen these, different people, foreigners as supernatural and alien? That's what makes these items so interesting. The imagery is strange and slightly unsettling. The similarity between some of the sanxindui & pazyryk archeological finds r interesting. From some of the pazyryk buried sites excavations in eastern Siberia there were remains of Chinese bronze mirror, lacquer wares & silk. There could be a long cultural/trade links between the pazyryk nomads & the ancient Chinese. Many ancient Chinese texts mentioned about the pazyryk & as populaces but unfortunately there were none in reverse! The recently excavated 玉琮 ilfrom buried site4 adds another twist! Perhaps, the ancient linkages r far more complicated than been extrapolated here. I have read some ancient text in passing about after the ancient war between 黄帝 & 蚩尤. During the war both parties had gathered many associated tribes within their respective regions to form the warring armies. Sanxindui could very well be one of the remain from the northern tribe that 蚩尤 (whose realm was in the northern China) enrolled to fight the war. After 蚩尤 lost the war, many of them were dispersed by 黄帝 to remote areas all over southern/western China.

Thanks for sharing your insight - I really appreciate it. I agree that "There could be a long cultural/trade links between the pazyryk nomads & the ancient Chinese." During the 黄帝 & 蚩尤's times, there were many tribes and it's possible that Sanxingdui was one of them.

A documentary of extraordinary quality, not only because of the beautiful images and evidence, but because you have woven aspects of the historical situation into a cohesive whole. In the West, we're not so privy to detailed information about lesser known places such as Sanxingdui. So this was a real eye-opener, even to those of us who already know a lot about the extinct Tarim Basin people. To heighten the curiosity spirit you cultivate, I'd like to offer: 1. The "Tree of Life" was a very important cultural detail associated with the people of Eden, as described in the so-called Book of Genesis. It is extremely interesting that an artistic example of its representation is still preserved and viewable to present day people. Eden was located in the Mid East, probably originally in Syria before its people moved to Mesopotamia. Whatever that culture was and who its people were, they have been long gone for perhaps very many thousands of years. Is there a connection between Eden and the legends of Atlantis and a subsequent heavy dispersal of those people into neighboring regions? 2. Even in modern European-American culture, the Tree of Life has reappeared in the books of J. R. R. Tolkien and the extremely popular movie versions of the books. The concept of the Dunedain people, from Tolkien, whose lifetimes were in the hundreds of years, came from descriptions of the family members of Adam and his descendants (the original Edenites). I say that to highlight how alive such things are in the imagination and genetic memory of many of us :) 3. As you seem to contemplate, the Tarim Basin people, rather than having been a fairly recent incursion into that area, may have existed there for many, many thousands of years, perhaps as an outpost of some larger culture group, such as Edenites, or Atlanteans, for example. If you check maps of the extent of glaciers during the last major ice age cycle, you can see that they encircle the Tarim Basin. This means that once the ice age ebbed, the Tarim Basin must have been rather well-watered for many thousands of years from the glacial runoff. It is probably only in the last few thousand years that it has become too dry to support life. 4. Some Israelites may have been descendants of the people from Eden who actually did travel far in ancient times, living among other people of other cultures, especially in an effort to spread religious or cultural ideas. The artifacts of Shintoism, for example, are rather oddly but extremely similar to those of Jewish customs and dress. It is as if the ancient Japanese were highly receptive to the foreign customs but felt the need to adapt them to their own preferences and uses.

I doubt that people capable of such bronze metallurgy would be running around scantly clad as unfortunately depicted in some of the scenes. :-) But another great one Tina! Great series. Thank you for the support! I agree that our history is much more complicated that what we were told. As for some of the earlier civilization illustrations, I have the same feeling as you. Unfortunately most illustrations I can find online portray our ancestors with ragged clothes (to show the differences between them and modern people?) ...

Thank you for the hard work you do, Tina. When I focus on the masks, which are still a huge mystery to me, because they are so unique. If the Sanxingdui people came from somewhere else, masks like these should be found there. If they 'invented' this unique look, there must be a development in the look still waiting to be excavated. I read it earlier this year. The paper claims that the Tarim Basin mummies were not newcomers to the region and they were direct descendants of Ancient North Eurasians (ANE). What they didn't say much is that "Ancient North Eurasians (ANE), one of several West-Eurasian lineages, originated in the Eurasian Steppe region (including the Afontova Gora complex) and contributed noteworthy amounts of ancestry towards later Eastern and Northern European hunter-gatherers, as well as towards later Steppe pastoralists (Yamnaya culture and Afanasievo culture). Neolithic Iranian farmers and Ancestral Native Americans as well as various Paleo-Siberian groups, including the Jōmon people (ancestors of the Ainu people) also received some geneflow from ANE-related populations (from Wiki)."

I think we have more clarity if we look at the material culture of Eastern Tibet. Have a look at "Thogchags" and their origin; if we delve in, Tibet overall had influence in metallurgy from Central Asia and Southern Siberia. Basically the Andronovo and Seima-Turbino sphere. Also the Sichuan-Tibet ethnic corridor had ritual items of similar origins, even passing down to the local Burmo-Qiangic people, which was again influenced by Tibet. The pre-Buddhist Tibet had major influence from Zhangzhung culture, which some say is also of Central Asian origin. Some of the locals of course may have learned the craft from them and have produced goods indigenously too. We have to note, at the time the the present China wasn't fully formed, so there will be less similarities when compared to likes of far Eastern Han culture which is more prevalent now. West Sichuan would have had more influence from their boundary neighbour Tibet and of course the already present Tibeto-Burman/Burmo-Qiangic ethnic ancestors. We cannot leave out the possibility that the ethnic groups' ancestors were the ones responsible, since many in Yunnan and South Sichuan have their origins ingrained in the direction of North. Even the funeral rituals lead the dead to the same direction, as the place of their ancestors. The Sanxingdui puzzle won't be solved only looking at it from the perspective of the current Sinosphere. We have to try to go back 3000 years and understand the cultural sphere at the time, taking cues from what is indigenous there now.

Oh forgot to add, at 2:20 the central design pattern on the gold item is similar to what the likes of Qiang and Yi use as motifs on their ethnic wear. It may be nothing, but the resemblance is eerie. Same with the resemblance of headgears on the Sanxingdui ruins with the nearby ethnic people's headdress, and patterns on the vessels/other items.

Thanks for your insight on the Sanxingdui cultures I watched(and liked) all 3 videos, I wonder if the shu were the Zhuan Xu people in the Shanhaijing who I believe are described as "whiter" peoples coming from the step, after they lost a war they changed their totem from a snake to a fish and migrated to the Bay of Bengal and then left by sea(it's not easy to find this info in English so I'm not sure if I read this right) . One thing to note on the animal mask with protruding eyes, the Step cultures used hallucinogens(Soma in India, Haoma in Persia), most likely mushrooms and I believe that is what is coming out of the eyes of the animal mask, the design coming out of the forehead would be the vision, this eventually would make it to the new world becoming the Jaguar cults of South and Meso Americas.

Thanks Tina. It is "crazy" how humans have moved all across the world...and not just by an airliner. One mob that interests me so much are our indigenous peoples in Australia which have been here for something like 70,000 years (yes that more than my usual suggestions). I understand that they even crossed the land bridge in the north of Asia to Alaska and wandered down through the Americas leaving some "last" peoples in the south of Sth America. Also, the red headed people in New Zealand who came from the Middle East down through the Americas, to Easter Island and then onto NZ (less than a millennia ago) . Truly they much have been very good sea people, as well. Who can complain about all the "invasions" when it is something we humans have done for tens for tens of thousands of years....just moving on!?

The Scythians had strong ties with, Judea, the Southern Kingdom of Israel. As well, they did not eat pork; nor would they allow the raising of pigs within their territory. They may have originally been one of the Northern Tribes; but more likely they were a Northern Tribe(s) that assimilated with an Indo- European Tribe. Another curious thing is that the Earliest accounts of Ghengis Khan describe him as having caucasian features and reddish to blonde hair.

I appreciate your honest interpretation of the artifacts recovered from this little understood civilization in proposing that they were related to the Scythians which is in stark contrast to the CCTV's presentation of this culture as the ancestors of the kingdom of Shu. Late last year it was discovered that the Xiongnu were also closely related culturally, technologically, and genetically to the Andronovo Scythians as well, which would by extension mean their successors, the Mongolians are too. There is a worldwide campaign to cover up how widespread the Indo-Europeans were, being present on every single continent thereby dramatically increasing the rate of advancement across the world, and influencing basically every culture in the world. It's sad that China still lies about developing independently from European influence and pretends their culture was due to their progress alone.

Agreed. Numerous Chinese sources (e.g CCTV, search results on google, etc) are presenting this part of history with heavy bias, in order to claim the San Xing Dui's culture, historical advancements, and artifacts as part of their own (assuming it to be the "Shu" kingdom without evidence). Which, completely corresponds to your observations. They intentionally under-present the contributions from the ancient Nomadic tribes, such as the Andronovo People, XiongNu, Scythians, etc., just because they were written off as "Barbarians & Savages" in Chinese history. As a Chinese myself, I am absolutely disgusted by this kind of cowardly behavior. I believe every single culture, ethnic group, and nation has the right to be proud for a multitude of reasons, but twisting facts to claim others' contributions is definitely not one of them.

@@selfie-roth6952 Indeed, it's nice to know there are those who oppose this phenomenon. It's not just China doing it though, it has been covered up everywhere except for Russia who themselves diminish the impact other cultures have had on them as well. There is nothing to be ashamed of in saying that other cultures who came before you had a serious impact on later ones because the later cultures have plenty of achievements of their own to be proud of, built upon their predecessors. Also I'm an avid fan of history in general and I like learning about the history of China too. Surely this culture did have an impact on the later peoples of Sichuan and Jiang Wei, the Shu general is my favorite figure from Chinese history, an honorable man who's destiny was stolen from him by unforeseen circumstances and who is unfairly portrayed as a result.

Let me tell you that 100% of the Sanxingdui people are Chinese. They come from the Dongyi tribe five or six thousand years ago. They are located in today's Shandong Province. The average height of Shandong Province is the highest in China. At that time, the Dongyi people were also called giants and tall. The Han nationality did not refer to one race. China has mixed all races and cultures for thousands of years to form the current Chinese Han nationality, This is the real reason why there are no similar unearthed traces in other parts of the world.

@@user-rp4qc7yh9g - "Freak?" Wow, an internet tough guy. How original. Only weak men and cowards act tough online. Grow up and learn to act like a man. Now to the topic. In your comment, you say they were "Chinese" which is a "nationality" when I used the term "ethnicity." So saying they were "Chinese" is literally nonsense when talking about ethnicity and you even state in your own comment that "China has mixed all races and cultures for thousands of years." So the fact that this culture falls within modern Chinese borders tells us nothing about their ethnic mix. It is a fact that the Chinese government is withholding the genetic findings regarding these people. So we do not know their ethnic mix. It doesn't affect me either way and if you have conclusive scientific evidence please provide it. If you thought I was wrong to say the ethnicity is unknown and there is scientific proof then you could just have provided it without insulting me. I would actually have been grateful for the information. Notice that both in my comment both sentence had a question mark at the end, meaning I was asking for information and trying to understand something. That's how grown-ups converse instead of acting like a little child whose dummy has been knocked out. @@CuriousBeingbyTina Oh, I think the bronze technology does come from the west. They had mines in Altai, and so forth. But the art style is what I'm thinking might come from the east. Yes, the tree of life motif is like an exact match for the Mesopotamian one, but the facial depictions and abstract glyphs don't feel western. In fact, the sharp angles of the faces suggest they came from a culture whose primary art form was carved wood. This culture then acquired metalworking technology and used their traditional wooden style with the metal. That's how it looks to me.

After noting the similarities with the Sami culture throat singing and the Mongols affinity for the same type of expression your mention of the Seima - Turbino age makes more sense. Also the stylized reindeer/horned animals appear to have a lot of nuances with the Nordic European metal works. Well done and thank you for the information. A few years ago I bought a bronze bu of similar design to those shown at 3:58 because, even though its most likely a fake, the bronze working is amazing for the period and having an example is rare. Also the youtube channel 'db Jones' postulates that those ritual containers like the Bu may show features that relate to land locations that the rich may have been given control over. Although I have not looked into the viability of his research it has some interesting merits.
